I have a liberal friend who thinks this is a great idea, but he also told me that if the cost of a fast food meal went up from $2.00-$5.00 because of this, he would no longer eat there. I tried to explain the concept of entry level jobs to him, but he thinks that every single job should pay enough for every single person to earn a great living. We stopped at a fast food restaurant and he ordered a burger, fries, and drink. His order was wrong and he was angry. I said, "The person that botched your order was not good enough or experienced enough to earn $20.00 an hour". He said nothing. Liberals always mean well, but their solutions to major problems are often disastrous. Ask the folks in New York how that 'No Bail' release program for criminals is working out.

not just to support a family you couldn't support yourself on 15 an hour.. go ahead try to live on 15 an hour.. they wouldn't even let you rent a studio apartment on 15 an hour the cheapest apartments around are a little over 1000 a month.. at least where I live.. and I'm sure California is even higher to rent a single bedroom apartment so the cost-of-living is higher. They should raise the minimum wage higher. That's just how it works... there's lots of reasons why places flop most of the time it's because of internal trouble..

PlumpJack Café in Olympic Valley, California, is seeking a part-time busser to "assist the food server in the restaurant to ensure guest satisfaction during all aspects of the dining experience." The advert, placed on job posting website ZipRecruiter, says that the employee will be paid $16 per hour and their duties will include clearing dishes from tables, the preparation of caffeinated drinks and decorating tables prior to customer arrival. The café is owned by the PlumpJack Group, a company founded by Newsom which specializes in wine and high-end dining. Its website says that PlumpJack Group operates four bars or restaurants, placing it well below the threshold for the $20 per hour minimum wage. The new law applies to those restaurants that are part of a chain of 60 or more venues nationwide and which offer limited or no table service. So looks like Gavin is in the clear legal wise on paying $16. This $20 min for fast food businesses though is crazy, we are seeing the bad effects already.

I hate the guy but it is mostly corporate greed. Average laborer prevailing construction wage in 1970 was 26 and change. It rose till the early 90s. In 1985 I was getting 33.86. Let that sink in and everyone made bank.

The problem is and has always been housing. The system is not regulating rents for studios and apartment complexes. Landlords are charging 2-3000 a month for a box that should at most be worth 500-600 monthly.

Minimum wage should stay at what it is. Even a person fresh out of school entering minimum wage jobs should be able to save up enough to move to his first place a rental such as a studio or apartment. Many ppl cannot afford a living. Regulate housing. Apartments are not worth 2k a month doesn’t matter where they are at. 500-600 at most.

I hear what you’re saying but how I see the affordability issue on housing is that true wage earning jobs, i.e. manufacturing jobs have been outsourced for 20+ years to China. For the politicians to try and make fast food jobs a career is nothing but smoke and mirrors to the real problem.

The woman being interviewed said: the owner of the Fosters Freeze who closed his stores were EXEMPT from increasing the employee’s minimum wages because of HOW MANY STORES HE HAD. Which means the owner is SHIFTING BLAME on the law that DIDN’T AFFECT HIM.

It's corporate greed more than the minimum wage. Average laborer prevailing construction wage in 1970 was 26 and change. It rose till the early 90s. In 1985 I was getting 33.86. Let that sink in and everyone made bank. Not just corporations. When Calif was the Golden State. It truly was.

In 1985 when you were getting $33.86 the minimum wage was $3.35. You were making 10.11 times the minimum wage. Now the California minimum wage is $20. Are the people doing the job you did in 1985 being paid $202 an hour now? Yes, it's the minimum wage. A corporation is there to make money. If the cost of labor goes up so does the price of its goods. If the price is more than people are willing to pay then the corporation goes out of business.

In Downey, CA the first Mc Donald's was there. It STILL has the giant golden arches and wrap around outdoor counters. Foster's Freeze was the absolute best growing up. So for all those who are blaming the democrats for a business shutting down, you might want to consider that these companies charge up to and beyond a 1 million dollar in franchise fees and yearly renewal fees per location. These independent owners(franchisee) with a license/lease have to pay for everything to the franchise, all of the food, menus, packaging, and furniture has to be purchased from that franchise corporation. That is before the independent owner (franchisee) makes a penny. You can't even start a franchise business without having a new worth of at least $600,000 with liquid capital of $300,000. The franchise corporation is the problem not the crappy minimum wages that an independent franchisee has pay. If you want to continue to work for $7.25 an hour keep voting for republicans.

Our favorite was on the way to the coast in what we now call Wine Country. That was in the '50s. We always stopped for at least a dipped cone. Back then, most of the help were teenagers making money to save for college, when state colleges and universities were free, before the Democrats took over and decided that we'd have the most comfortable people who just didn't feel like working, on Earth.

It’s a vicious cycle. This happened in other states when minimum wage went up to $15 or more. The consumer pays the higher prices. Now, those consumers will not patronize those businesses any longer. Revenues, profits will diminish. The business will fold. It will lead more people into poverty and standing in line at the local soup kitchen.

You are protected by the NRLA which is federal law. (But management is unfortunately not protected). There’s no reason to be jealous, upset or threatened at all by lower wages moving upward, what follows is YOUR pay moving upward too. But if need be, ASK for it. Know your worth.

Years ago I worked for a company where the union demanded a dollar an hour raise and the company wanted a dollar an hour pay cut because they were in financial trouble. The union said no way so we all lost $19 an hour rather than a dollar an hour, they shut down we had to find a new job. Good work on the union for that one.

@@OIllllO Adults are at work during the day working career jobs like S.T.E.M.S , mechanics, and mission critical industries. Only housewives and chefs should be browsing grocery stores during 9-2pm while college students work the 9-2pm. Then the high-schoolers come in 4-6pm and 6-8pm shifts. Cashier jobs are for part-time workers that live with a bread winner or students sharing a domicile/apartment. Those jobs aren't meant for solo housing.
