The interview with Tom Merrick: • Fitness Should Be FUN-...

While I love mixing different training styles and think doing so is fundamentally the key to optimal performance, I still have a special soft spot for calisthenics. In fact, if I was forced to choose just one modality to train with… I’d probably pick calisthenics.
That’s exactly what I told Tom Merrick - the Bodyweight Warrior - when he asked me the same question on his podcast!
So, why calisthenics? I love bodyweight training because you can use it anywhere. You don’t need any equipment or even a gym membership: a random field will do just fine.
Bodyweight training is perfectly scalable to any ability level, and it will increase your strength to weight ratio. You won’t get big and heavy. You’ll get powerful.
It’s also perfectly capable of packing on muscle AND strength AND even developing the legs. Contrary to popular belief.
Moreover, though, bodyweight training will begin to teach you about yourself as you attempt more challenging movements. Calisthenics is a journey and an education.
For example: you can’t do a perfect handstand without developing your overhead mobility, without learning to control your body in an inverted position, without contracting your glutes, without depressing your scapula.
Some of these terms might be completely foreign to anyone who hasn’t trained in this way! But the end result of chasing these goals is that you develop so much MORE than just a handstand.
And the reward is a movement that looks almost superhuman.
