Been playing for a year, proud of my progress but frustrated that I'm not where I want to be just yet (I suppose I'll always want to be better than I am - but I'm cool with that). This video was actually really helpful, I didn't really know what I wanted my blues playing to sound like, I was doing too much and overcompensating without really zeroing in on the chord tones and that 'call and response' vibe. Thanks for the lesson, my dude!

This is wonderful! I have been playing for yrs and have never figured it out. This is such a simple and amazing approach the way you break it down string by string. I found some straightforward Blues backing tracks in A and had so much fun just jamming on one string. I will be checking out some more of your lessons for sure. Thank you so much for opening this huge door for me :-D

Great lesson, I've been looking for some way to move up and down the neck and this is a great tutorial for that. I'm a rhythm guitarist/singer who's NEVER been able to randomly solo. I can play certain solo's but I can't make one up to save my life. Once I can do that I can more comfortably play as a 3 piece band when needed. I also have no clue about phrasing. I can play alot of notes in the right sequence quickly but it's boring like you said. I'm starting to rethink how to solo and am realizing that you have a beginning a middle and an end that should be thought of that way, especially at first. Once I can get those three parts down I'll have my first solo!

Thank you for breaking down the 12 bar blues quickly! I have been trying to figure out for a while what exactly this means. Now it makes sense, especially the 1,4,5 part of A major, being A,D, and E. Now I just have to memorize the order in which 1,4,5 repeat in the 12 bar blues.

I've been playing for over 20 years and this is the first time I've seen this approach. I wish this lesson was available when I first started plying! Hey Erich - Like I said in that other video - this was a great practice session for me on flute. I've got the A minor pentatonic and the blues scale going, and I'm ready for some phrasing within the structure of the 1, 4, 5 12-bar blues. This video is super helpful for that. I loved it. Not knowing where to start in improvising has been my problem, and you solved that. Thanks!

I feel an obligation to have to commmet... This lesson was a penny drop moment for me on being able to solo over they blues in different keys. By simply marking those 3 notes in a a clear way helped me see that pattern across the fretboard to transpose and play around with it. I am most grateful sir!!

good lesson thanks. instead of wandering around the minor pentatonic pattern, you're actually picking our target notes - good approach. maybe you do another video expanding on this with other target notes besides the root notes - targeting the minor 3rd, 5th, and the flat 7th from the chord context.

This was the click I needed I think.....I was also wondering if you had any tips on equipment to use for acoustic playing through a p.a. to get the guitar to sound more natural, pedals? DI boxes? Things to get that rich full tone artificially? Lol?

Eric so phrasing is nothing then starting on one of the notes in the chord and moving either up or down the scale in a rhythmic fashion. In theory so soloing is just chord tone phrasing. How do you go from riffs to making your own solos tho?

are the extra notes you are playing simply other notes in the key, or just 1,4,5 roots? as a rule of thumb, do you begin and end each lick on the corresponding chord root notes? and thanks for the lesson.

Connie, other notes are from the blues scale only. It IS helpful to begin/end each lick on the corresponding chord note. After some time, this will sound predictable, but we must know now to do it first. Also, that will really make the chords and melodies match nicely.

This sounds like a great idea to memorize the notes on the fretboard aswell. Repeat this for other strings, and then change key to learn more notes...

Wish I had caught onto this less much earlier in my playing. The thing is I don't think I would have been receptive to the ideas without some practice of trial and error behind me already. Also my ear maybe needed to learn a little bit more about the subtle things that sound better.

How can you call them " chord" when using 1 string? I see it everywhere. Sheet music will say some cord is Emaj 7thF9/B major minor flat 3rd and only have one note on the paper

Sometimes guitar tabs will show the solo like this: solo G C D F am ect..... How do ppl know what notes to play? Sometimes the tab will have ONE NOTE only but gives it a chord name that is very complicated but will have 1 note. In ur solo example You played 4 notes total. When you played the 1 chord you played 2 note then played 2 more notes when playing the 4 chord ect Why are those "chords"? Thanks for responding btw

I'm just at the beginning, but you should also add that the notes (of rhe underlying chord you're playing over) determine the ending notes of both the call & response. There's a style where the call ends on 3rd or 5th, response ends on root/tonic. (I think) I just know the first one ends high, the response ends low. Lol. Ok, at 3:00 you say how the "great blues players learn" is to use on small section of the neck. On one string. Son, that allows you very few notes! Then right after that, you go from a low fret to the 10th fret. That's "using the whole neck," not one small section! I'm afraid this is gonna go waaaaay too slow for me. I'll try to watch for another few minutes, though, and give it a chance. 4:45 Uh, i know the structure of the blues, but you've sure got ME confused! Who's your audience here? You talk like you're teaching stark beginners, but you expect them to follow all this confusion? And what's the deal with only one oerson playing calls, the other playing responses? That format is rarely used, usually it's one player doing both. If you're teaching rote beginners, make it simpler That is, if you want them to learn. Oh, ok, i get it! You're targeting the "ADHD" crowd og Gen-Zers. You want them to relate to your acattered thinking. And saying the opposite of what you mean. Yeah, i guess that's one way to "get a dedicated audience."

You should start with some musical instruction. Not "theory," because that scares ppl, like they think they need to know maths & physics. It's just a little instruction. Like how the notes are referred to. Then you explain the interval numbers of the Major scale, how each one is named by a Roman numeral. Only the I, IV, and V are capitals, and those are Major chords. The others sre minor (ii, iii, vi) snd skip vii for now, cuz its diminished & rarely used Simple, like that.
