I recently got into Call of Cthulhu and I found your channel soon after. Super excited to see all of the videos you have been posting about the books you got from Chaosium. I have already ordered some. Thank you for sharing and doing the page throughs!

I ran this a couple years ago. It's pretty cool. Feels more Clark Ashton Smith meets Disney's Atlantis than Lovecraft, but that's cool in my book. Very psychedelic. It definitely needs some serious prep before you run it. I certainly didn't do as much as I wish I had. There are a LOT of factions & individuals to keep track of. And once you start going, it feels more sandboxy than it seems on first read. They aren't kidding about the "rescue" scenario being able to happen at almost any time. Being ready to run it at the drop of a hat was a bit stressful. There's also a chance to connect things to the Dreamlands, though my players never found any of the stuff about that, so it never came up. They did a pretty amazing job of avoiding clues and plot points, including almost everything about the fascists. You almost have to respect folks doing such a good job of missing everything you put in front of them. One of the big things I'd change is the finale, which leans very heavy on PCs doing really well on Cthulhu Mythos roles...a skill they likely don't have more than a few points in. I'm hoping to run it again. It's got a lot of really cool stuff in it. If players are in the mood for it, you could expand the underground world part (Lost World in Blue) substantially and really have some fun there.

Cheers for the comment on your experience running this adventure. Absolutely agree, there's a lot of adventure here and after the initial set-up it's not at all linear - or at least seems far better if driven by player motivation and investigation rather than plot rails. Without quite a bit of 'working backwards' from the end of each chapter with prep (and a strong overview of the whole whole book) it's one of those that's not easy for the Keeper to facilitate the best and most complete experience for the players (or themself). It can definitely get away on you and feel a bit disjointed. Some of the early underground stuff can be boring as hell unless the players have figured out what they're doing. That said, I do think this is a great adventure and certainly admire you for running this with players missing the Dreamlands stuff. Tough for the finalé. Definitely a PC learning curve required for this over just pulp, two-fisted shooting and hoping for the best!

@@Wraithing, Because my group was dead-set on not investigating some important stuff, I had to find creative ways to put a few important clues in front of them. Even so, they started down into the underground with absolutely no prep or understanding of what they were doing. I ended up turning the long descent into a sort of puzzle & elevator sequence to speed things up. The whole thing was an odd experience, and a learning experience. I was (still am) rusty at GMing after a 15+ year break and it was my first time with 7th Ed/Pulp Cthulhu, which didn't help. Still, a campaign I want to try my hand at running again someday. Perhaps fleshed out with some more Dreamlands & more underground scenarios.

I'd love to run this campaign using Achtung Cthulhu. At first glance it felt more contained and tame than 2-headed serpent, without all the globetrotting adventuring, but after getting it and reading I thought it had some cool ideas and variety.

The character portraits on the cover are really to my taste. I also like the other illustrations. The computer-generated full-page illustrations, on the other hand, are much less so. The overall layout is attractive. The plans seem very legible and well detailed. The subject of the campaign is interesting. All that remains is to see if it's really playable. Campaigns that make you travel - such as the Masks of Nyarlathotep - don't appeal to me as an Arcane Keeper. The spatial context requires too many resources to be coherent. Too many extras or too much pre-game research.
