Nice car. A couple GT28RSs would probably be a nice upgrade and spool up pretty quick

Thanks for the review. Since these weren't a high production rate car, you're sharing yours is appreciated. It's really got a hold on your speed fix. The amount of time you've owned it, improved it, learned it's go & no-go. I don't know if I could R&R a trans 4 times. Thats quite the quest for getting that car to hook up. I hope that any Youngsters with 6 speed C-4's are going to pay attention to all that you've gone through. Even if it's not a Callaway. It's great to learn something new that works.

I always loved seeing this car on the highway, back in the day. I remember seeing the blue flames from your exhaust when you left me standing still.

Just like I remember it. The Business Manager for the Chevy Dealer I worked for in 1994 had one of these Callaways. I have always loved the GM turbo cars, when I started out as a GM Technician in a Buick Dealership in 1986, with the Regals. We sold two GNXs in 1987 where most dealers were lucky to get one to sell. Similarly special machines. I had a 1987 Turbo-T WE4 (Blackout) myself, that was fun to drive and drag race. Thanks again for the rare opportunity to admire your Callaway. With a name like Garrett, it seems fitting that you enjoy the turbo cars also! That is what the Buicks came equipped with as I am sure that you know. Have a great New Year Matt! Keep the videos rolling if you can. I for one truly appreciate them. God Bless you and yours in the New Year.

Always wondered where they stuffed the turbos and air movement

Nice car,another big upgrade you don't have is the hood blisters (scoops) witch allowed much cooler air to the intercoolers, they became standard for the 1991 models but could be retrofitted on the earlier1987-90 cars.

Love the video, I'm going to be building a twin turbo setup on my 86 soon. I'll be using 2 GM-8 turbos from a 6.5 diesel. Similar power bands compared to the tpi engines and they have a nice whistle when spooling. I chose this route because I wanted a nice street car with around 10-12 psi on a mostly stock engine. Fun,fast, and reliable. Do you have any suggestions for a tuning shop for these platforms?

Interesting stuff. I'm surprised they used exhaust gas pressure only for activating the wastegates. You could help it reach full boost more quickly if it had a more modern vacuum/boost control on the wastegates. The exhaust pressure valve will always start to creep open when you're not quite there yet. I'd also like to ask what the logic is with turbos spooling better if you run a single post turbo exhaust rather than twin. Scavenging? On my Saab 900 Turbo I was able to lower the boost threshold from 2500 rpm to 1900 rpm simply by fitting a larger, smoother turbo downpipe. So I wonder how a single pipe on the 'Vette beats twin pipes. Congrats BTW on the car, that's one of my all time dream cars.

Hey, Matt quick question. Love your cars. By the way, did you have to get a tune after you ported the intake and aftermarket runners and exhaust
@gm-classics
@gm-classics 4 месяца назад
Not really “a tune” so to speak on these. It has a chip that turns fans on early and a few things, but all the fuel is done by the increased fuel pressure and the micro fueler adjustments.. basically is at the limits of these systems and boost is adjusted down to make it all work

@gm-classics Thanks for the reply. I have 2 87 Callaway's, as well.followed your advice Put an exhaust on one and now doing some new fuel injectors from south bay. but since I had the intake apart wanted to put on and acccel base And big runners I have already in the garage. So are you using the same chip that came in your callaway, corvette Just making sure not too many other people out there with modified callaways that have done work to them themselves.

It'll be a 3.33:1, the 3.31:1 diff was only in a DANA36 and only used in 1984, 402 were sold. Why don't you have the Callaway Double-D tips? It all looks very nice and clean and well kept under there especially given the fact you say it has a few miles on it.
@gm-classics
@gm-classics 11 месяцев назад
Yes you are correct, 3.33 RPO GT7 on the 8.5 dana 44 rpo G87. I have the orig exhaust saved, the one on now is quite large double 2.5 exits with 3” inlet. There is no “D” type tip available at the time, probably not now either, that would work on that for the look.. we tried!

@@gm-classicsif they are replaced often I guess. Hot oil and rubber is a liability (pressure or not) I have turbo Buicks and diesel trucks also turbo they do not have any rubber lines for either return or feed for the turbo but it’s not my car
