This film is from an extraordinary collection called Calling Blighty, in which Armed Forces personnel stationed in India and the Far East during World War II recorded messages to be sent back home. Here the Brighton Boys stationed in Burma are given around 10 seconds each to record their message. It’s one of curator Michelle Kirby’s favourites from the IWM’s archives, and one that particularly resonates with our situation during the Covid-19 global crisis, with many people turning to video calls to stay in touch. The film demonstrates the power of seeing and hearing someone, and, despite their 12 week wait between recording and screening, the Brighton Boys’ awkward messages feel remarkably relatable today.

Contrary to a couple of comments about "less Michelle" (?) Please remember folks... having IWM curator Michelle's comments help to really CONTEXTUALISE a history and culture lost to a lost generation (My own mum passed away very recently) The purpose of the film is explained, situated and explained in a way that would not be possible from an empty clip. Did you KNOW these were screen in cinemas? Do you know they had SUCH impact, or when it was filmed, and where? Did you know how LONG it took for these clips to make it back to Blighty in 1945? Or WHY they filmed these clips? None of this is known from just the clips alone. Thats the KEY purpose of curation - to select, organize , SITUATE remarkable artefacts like this. I thought I knew a lot about European History and the WW2 history of domestic Britain, but this was completely new to me - So Michelle, keep doing what you do and like the Brighton Boys say - keep smiling :-)

I agree. And there are plenty out there to watch for free in their original form: www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/432 and www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/431 for the East Anglia region

I was directed to the IWM Collections site to research SOE agents, including Odette Sansom's & Leo Marks' interviews, & even to see the jacket that Odette wore during her captivity. In searching for Vera Atkins of SOE's F Section, I came across this video & the visit of Vera Lynn to the troops in Burma. My cousin Vincent was killed at age 19 on the Burma Road in 1944 - 6 years before I was born, & our cousin Vinny, now 88, wrote a book about Vincent & Merrill's Marauders to keep Vincent's memory alive. Today, thanks to IWM, I was able to send my cousin the links to these videos.

My Dad was on these somewhere he was with the Norfolks in Burma my Nanny told me that she went to a cinema in the west end of London think for some reason it may have Curzon or something like that, She burst into tears when she saw my dad and his Brother Uncle Fred and all he talked about was Nanny's bread pudding when he got home, sorry Dad and Nanny but I did not like it. Been looking for years but never found him would give anything to hear his voice again and see him moving and laughing, he passed away 40 years ago this year I was only 22 when he died went far too soon. I miss him so much. Perhaps one day I will find him. Love you Dad to infinity and back and again.

Note how clearly those men spoke - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- unlike today's pampered generation, who you sometimes have to ask to repeat again and again before comprehension dawns.
