Callum Innes is known for paintings created through a process that involves the repeated removal as well as application of paint. Calm and authoritative when exhibited, they nevertheless bear the traces of the controlled chaos of their production, and the creative and destructive interaction of paint and turpentine.
This exhibition brought together a selection of Innes’s work from the last fifteen years, from early works made in 1991 to new paintings completed earlier in 2006. Including examples from each of the different series in which Innes works, the exhibition offered an opportunity to trace their evolution and inter-dependence, and to gain an understanding of the development of Innes’s singularly rigorous visual language.
