Calm is my Sanctuary - How I cope with modern life as a (highly) sensitive person

This week we had a lot of wind but I made it to the lovely wood just before it.
As a HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) I require calm - especially after a phase of impact through socialising. Today’s world is full of fast and loud consumption and can be overwhelming for many people.
I gave some lovely candle holders a new home and made plant based Lasagne that was really tasty. You will find the recipe in the community tab 🙂
Thank you for your kind support.

Exactly what I've struggled with my whole life (66 years in 2024). I purchased the book several years ago & felt like the author was writing about my life. I simplified my life 35 years ago, simplifying my family's life as well, we lived a quiet life with less activities and outings. It helped all of us grow, mature, and move through life with more meaning and purpose. I still struggle with a busy schedule, noisy places, etc. but I am thankful for the quiet, peaceful home I have structured to come home to. What a blessing to have found you on RU-vid, thank you for your beautiful videos.

@@thescottishfairy5396 Well, trying to give a concise response could lead one to believe it was easy. LOL It took years to get my husband on board (5 exactly), but in the end he was able to tell others how much he believed in the choices we had made. At the time (32 years ago), it was revolutionary for the wife to stay home and dedicate herself to making a home and raising her children. I was thankful our extended family rallied around us. We saw our country going downhill, as no one was slowing down, and parents/children were burning out from the schedule & choices they were making. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have lived that life, but it meant we went without fancy new cars, gorgeous homes decorated to the hilt, fancy vacations, the best clothes, etc. Instead we invested in the lives of our children, trying to give them the best foundation we could with the resources we had. I'm sure both of our children are also HSP as well, and once they left our home, well it was quite an adjustment for them to adjust to world outside our home. It took them years to learn the benefits of what they were raised in.

I can relate so much with you on being a HSP! Until I learned that was me, I thought I was different….but different in a bad way. Now I am thankful for it. I appreciate a slow living life with little noise, a long walk in nature, gratefulness for the little things and truly loving my self as who I am. We are few and far between, which in my eyes makes us special 💕 Thank you for sharing!

Dear Scottish Fairy. I feel the same. When I was young I thought what's wrong with me, I didn't like parties, I always wanted to escape as soon as I went there. Huge Crowds and noise are also difficult to cope with. I try to avoid many things now that I get older. Back then nobody talked about high sensitivity. Thank god times have changed. I work in an office surrounded by toxic people and I easily absorb peoples energy just like you, it drains me. I'm glad you found your happy place ❤. Your Lasagne looked delicious. Take care 🙏

I also found it really helpful when I first read about highly sensitive people and realised I was one! I am lucky to live in a rural situation but of course sometimes have to be in towns and busy places and find it helps to pace myself and listen to when I’ve had enough, and have some quiet time if I can . Nature is always a great help, also reading 🌿💕

This is so very true of most people who just cope with it... I'm lucky that where I live the the grocery store a few years back introduced a sensory night once a week for families with autistic children and for individuals that have sensory issues and anxiety (this is written on their sign as to why) from 6-8 p the lights are dimmed and the music is off and it is such a relief to go shopping during this time t hat my anxiety is reduced and I can focus on doing a 1/2 hr shop vs a 2 hr one when the day is normal. It is unfortunate that as one gets older it is getting worse and friend circles tend to shrink drastically but then again one pushes through so as to not be left behind 😊thank you for sharing

Hi Kerstin, i just discovered your channel, thank you for sharing. I too discovered this winter that i am HSP and my god it explains alot! Living in Canada near Montreal we live in the fast past of the north american culture where your work and your job description defines who you are. I decided against this way of thinking and living, we are all humans first and not defined by our work.

Hello Nathalie and thank you for your comment. I am glad you found you are HSP and know why things might be different for you. It isn't a nice thing to be defined by your work (I know how this feels from living in other countries) and think you are doing well in not participating in it if this isn't your thing. I could not agree more that being human isn't defined by your job but your character.

Hello lovely lady ☺️my goodness I can't tell you how calming and reassuring it is to hear how yourself and others cope with their own high sensitivity,as I have all my life and actually really proud of it tbh. It has been used as a negative from others " oh your way to sensitive " however my answer has always been "well when your gaining from my sensitive ear and understanding heart that's when it suits you, but when your not filtering your thoughts it can come across hurtful " . So I'm definitely very proud of being me and I would say empath is part of my personality trait and it's helped to understand that . Thankyou 🙏 and bless your kind heart 🙏 xx

Thank you Scottish Fairy for your films on high sensitivity. They are very needed in our world today and very appreciated by those of us who also have the trait and are doing our best trying to navigate life. When I first learned that I was highly sensitive, there was an abundance of information about the challenges of the highly sensitive. Being who I am, I wanted to explore the advantages linked with the trait because I believe that for a Christ Follower, there is nothing in our lives that is not there for our good. Learning that my deep sensitivity is what fills me with awe and wonder, whimsy and joy has been so life-giving!!! Yes, many noises physically hurt me, but many noises fill me with exquisite joy!!! Ordering my life to include more of the later is a mission for me now. I truly appreciate you and your films!!! Your aesthetic nature is so appreciated and I love watching you live your life and listening to your observations as you continue to build a more sustainable lifestyle for yourself and your husband. I love to hear you talk about your husband!!! I can hear the love for him and the pride in your heart to be his wife!!! I am the same. I adore my husband and I thank God every day that I get to wake up to enjoy him and our home. Sending you my love 💕.

I can not bear traffic noise, or nosy people. I am so fortunate now to live in a house where no traffic passes. I have tinnitus, so am very reactive to any noise, and like you, I am very sensitive to light. Unfortunately, my sitting room is joined to next doors indoor swimming pool, and when they are in there swimming, it sounds like the wilderbeast moving around! If they play any music in there, it is funneled into my property, but luckily, they have only been in the pool about twice this year! Upstairs, they have a games room, and the pool table is right by one of my bedrooms, and that noise was loud! So I moved to the furthest bedroom from there (I have 3) and again, they have not used that room much in the last year luckly. Thank you for your lovely video. xxx
