My 10 yr old autistic son hates getting his hair cut, and it was especially difficult taking him to a salon or a barber shop. So I learned how to cut his hair myself, however I don't think those types of shears or clippers would work for an African American child, and I shaves my son's head bald anyway. He hates it, which is why I try to shave his head as quickly as possible, shaving his head bald saves time for the shave. Anyway I do love and admire how you and your wife are raising such awesomely productive and intelligent sons. God bless you all.

Every other haircut my mother would do except for around my forehead - total meltdown. The other times it would be a local barber who had infinite patience - back and sides with electric clippers rarely touching my skin then clean up and finishing with scissors then finish off with my forehead area - I'd put both hands above my eyes then he would put one hand above mine and cut my hair with the other. As I got older eye drops or the idea of contacts was an absolute no, years later the idea of laser eye surgery to correct my eyesight was out of the question. Then I developed cateracts and surgery, then a detached retina and emergency surgery, then a mole near my eye that turned into cancer (didn't spread) and surgery which accelerated a droopy eyelid... surgery for that a couple of days ago, after a few needles to deaden the area joking with the doctor about the number of needles and instruments he has had in and around my eyes - me: before all this started I couldn't stand anything around my eyes, even eye drops. In spite of all of that, nope I'll still not consider contacts.

This is one of the biggest challenges for my three year old autistic son, we can’t touch his hair whatsoever. We’ll give these a try, thank you!

I been there not easy at all ,another thing you could try which worked for us overtime was cutting it really shorts so it’s spiky and sensory to run his hand through and make a big thing out of it after eventually he may learn to enjoy or at least tolerate having it done for that after.

I am 65, Autistic with Cerebral Palsy, and I am used to getting haircuts. A week ago I took the local CART Paratransit Service here in Derry, New Hampshire to downtown and got a haircut at the Derry Barber Shop. "Dana" the Barber is familiar to me.

These look good for short hair. There are one or two barber shops near me that accommodate autistic children but they only do short hair. I can’t have my hair short and I’m yet to find a hair dresser I can tolerate. So my hair is down to my waist!!

Yup, mom doing it was no way but a certain barber had the patience and understanding to work with me - me two hands shielding my eyes, him one hand above mine while clipping with scissors with the other hand.

Very clever! I've resorted to cutting my own hair because going to a barber is stressful and so many of them charge too much for a basic haircut. I use a Wahl trimmer and pair of fabric scissors currently. Maybe this would work better.

These are a great concept. Would the blades still work if the cuts were made vertically? The haircut would look much better if it wasn’t being cut horizontal where all the lines show and are so blunt.

Im on the spectrum and just got my first professional haircut in years. My main issues were the bright lights in my face and getting my hair washed by someone else. I didn't mind the actual haircut but instead the preparation.

I actually dont mind getting my hair cut. I have high-functioning autism. I get why some people wouldn't like it. Sharp objects near your head like that wouldn't be fun.

I have a question, my younger son is autistic and he screams and fidgets and flails around Alot and it's like his dad and I have to physically hold him down to cut his and I just wondered if you had any tips because we've tried to even distract him with games or sensory toys and he still isn't happy

Products do matter and wahl it's probably some of the worst razors you can get. Get a real professional hair cutting brand not a cheap knockoff brand. It really does make a difference. You won't notice, but someone with autism like me will. Get Andis
