On 1 March 2013, St David's Day, the Choir were in concert with pupils from Pen-Y-Dre High School, in Merthyr. Here the Choir sings Calon Lan, one of the most beloved Welsh hymns.
Fantastic boys, I’m a Welshman born and raised from Llantwit major, This is what makes me proud to be welsh, could listen to it all day, bloody marvellous Di yawn
I’ve commented a few times before I’ve just noticed, but I come to this at low moments, and it brings me back, so everytime I comment. Thank you gents. Thank you very much
I wish we were taught this in school (Swansea) instead of some of the usual tripe. This is 'proper' Welsh performing with descants etc. - as it should be ! It's also worth listening to some traditional Welsh harp music - another beautiful and moving art form.
Why she couldn't have sorted out her sheets beforehand is a mystery, as is the background noise. Not ashamed to say this 17 stone 6 footer was in tears, last time I heard this was when my late father sang it to me as a kid. Bloody lovely
In 1963 when I was 5 years old my father bought a record player, he also bought 5000 Welsh Voices. This started my love of all kinds of music. Recently I was asked what was my favourite track of all time and I said I didn't have one but after much thought, it isn't anything by Fleetwood Mac, Hendrix, Metallica or The Beatles, it is Calon Lan first heard in Mono in my parents sitting room, as loud as my Dad could get that record player to go in 1963.
I love that story, reminds me of my childhood as I am certain that your first musical memories are important ones. However I am not Welsh and we certainly did not play the National Anthem or Jerusalem at teatime! That is the English for you!
I’ve recently come across this song and as a young 22 year old that has been in male voice choirs I’m almost brought to tear buy the beauty of this song. Keep going chaps massive respect to you all
What a version..... from a proud Welshman away from home and listened to this version from hostile lands ...... brings tears to my eyes for fallen Welsh comrades..... 👍
If only ....... served my country in 5 seperate conflicts and only a Welshman will know the value of this hymn. Your username is a clue to your comment ... God is Great
This is such an amazing beautiful different version of Calon Lân.. never heard sung like this before ).. very sweet and lovely at first., then the build up! Listening reminds me so much of my dear old dad singing in Oxford Welsh MVC. Thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰
Am English, moved to Wales joined choir, learnt calon lan, beautiful emotionaly charged, I learnt a lot from the Welsh, am back over the border, such is life.
Response to those criticizing - this was filmed partway through a concert, which is why the conductor had to rearrange her music. Have you neer seen anyone do that before? And there was nothing wrong with the piano accompaniment, it was exactly as it should be, pleasantly unobtrusive but enough to hold it all together. Such a shame that people seem to have a need to make silly and rude remarks on this website. If you want to complain, then show us that you can do better. I can wait!
This choir is brilliant. All that is wrong with this youtube is that it is an amateur camara production. Four cameras and the power of either BBC or ITV and you have something world-class.
The recording isn’t the best but this might still be my favourite version of this I can find on RU-vid. The into gets me. How soft and gentle, as if comforting a babe and then how strong it finishes. Absolutely beautiful. Diolch yn fawr, pawb. 🍻 🤍❤️💚 🏴
lovely singing most of my freinds are from dowlais that go to pen e dre high school ill ask then about this and yeas she coudlnt stop faffing about with them sheets could she??
Congrats guys, and lady director! Any idiot can bellow.. Pursue the sotto voce, you do it well and it could be your "Point of Difference" A Pleasure to hear B-)
Such beautiful singers, wonderful song, but where on earth did they get that ridiculous woman?? One wonders if she can even read music and the same goes for the accompanist. As a former cathedral chorister my heartfelt sympathy goes to these wonderful, talented choristers.......they deserve much, much better.

Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus, Aur y byd na'I berlau mân: Gofyn wyf am galon hapus, Calon onest, calon lân. Calon lân yn llawn daioni, Tecach yw na'r lili dlos: Dim ond calon lân all ganu Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos. Pe dymunwn olud bydol, Hedyn buan ganddo sydd; Golud calon lân, rinweddol, Yn dwyn bythol elw fydd. Hwyr a bore fy nymuniad Gwyd I'r nef ar adain cân Ar I Dduw, er mwyn fy Ngheidwad, Roddi I mi galon lân. Calon lân yn llawn daioni, Tecach yw na'r lili dlos: Dim ond calon lân all ganu Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos
Edit: Not all verses are sung here, I'm not a Welsh speaker, but it is my native language and everyday I strive towards learning what my family has lost. I posted these lyrics so I could sing along. Hope it helps towards anyone who is learning the language.
A lovely hymn, well sung, but very unprofessional of the conductor at the beginning. She should be far better prepared than that. I certainly detracted from the fine performance.
