Caltrain - San Jose to San Francisco King St - Morning Express

From railfan view from the northbound 8:03 express train from San Jose to San Francisco's 4th and King Street Station. This is officially classified as the last morning "Baby Bullet" train in the schedule, but I got lucky and scored a Gallery Car trainset with a reasonably clean railfan window. Station stops at Sunnyvale, Menlo Park, Redwood City San Mateo and Milbrae have been edited out.
This is a replacement for my previous "dirty window" video taken way back in 2012. Enjoy!

Everybody in the comments is crying about the use of the horn. A trains horn is a safety device. The engineer uses it to warn motorists, bystanders, and maintainence workers that he or she is coming through doing the better part of 80mph, and won't be stopping if you get in the way. Personally, I think hearing the horn being used a lot at those speeds makes the ride more thrilling from this point of view. I just wish both horn chimes would sound reliably instead of just the low note 90% of the time. Great video!

It's a lot of Europeans where grade crossings are often interlocked with signals, resulting in 5-15 minute waits for every little DMU that passes.

Wow I feel nostalgic. More than 20 years ago, I would sometimes take Caltrain from Hillsdale to downtown San Francisco in the morning and back to Hillsdale in the afternoon. I still have fond memories of Caltrain. But I remember the last station used to be referred to as "Fourth and Townsend" but in the video it's called "Fourth and King".

I rode this entire route for years from San Jose Diridon to San Francisco 4th and King, and that last car, which becomes the front car on the way back to San Francisco is my favorite car to ride on with my bike. I would take one of the solo seats upstairs and enjoy the view along the way. =) I worked at night, so I would take 5pm baby bullet to SF, and then catch the last train back to San Jose at Midnight. Fun times.

I've ridden the line between San Jose and Mountain View a few times. You can tell the Mt. View station, as it is where the VTA ends, and they are doing track work just before the station. VTAw as single track from the station are for quite a bit, but it looks like they are going to double track now.

Back in 1988 I videotaped the same San Jose to San Francisco route from the "railfan seat". It was on a Saturday and we passed only two southbound (RR East) trains. Between this 2015 video and mine in 1988 there are tons of changes. Besides the new four-track spots, nearly all the industrial spurs are gone, Bayshore Yard was will active, the Lenzen Street roundhouse was still used, and the Mission Bay wye was still in use. The lineside trees and shrubbery are much taller than in 1988, There was still "stick" rail in use in places and my camcorder picked up the "clickity-clack" sound. After seeing this I want to see my video from 31 years ago.

Having ridden the commute trains decades ago, this was a nice ride, thanks. I couldn't tell if you were inside the cab; this "railfan window" is at the front next to the operator's cab?. It would be great if you could arrange a southbound cab ride, thus picking up the locomotive sounds. Talkers and horn were annoying.

I'm guessing that many countries in Europe have two things that are different from the United States: - A smaller number of at-level crossings - A smaller number of people who are dumb enough to take huge risks and possibly get hit by a train at a grade crossing

Train crossings, blowing through and stopping at stations, passing through residential, and commercial areas. In other words its giving out a warning a train is near.

I know if they have quiet zones it can cause people being killed by a train coming between 79 and 110 mph

@mrbronson5333

Speed limit is 79 MPH but sometimes track restrictions reduce speed limits for purposes such as tight curves or construction. Plus with all the stops it has to make the train has to stop the engine or cab car part of the train right where the spot cab sign is. Most of the stations are less than a mile apart

Actually it's not, top speed for Caltrain is only 79 mph which is the standard. Once the corridor is electrified then Caltrain's speed will be comparable to the Northeast Corridor which is currently the fastest railway in the Western Hemisphere.

That’s the worst railroad horn I’ve ever heard and it sounds like someone is hitting a tambourine every time it blows. The scenery is mildly interesting.
