We need an alternative maximum tax law in California. That should apply to the state as a whole. It would say that Sacramento is prohibited from taking more than a given number of total aggregate dollars in tax from the people. Such excess money is syphoned off from the people by Sacramento that it always leads to massive corruption in our state. The best way to illuminate corruption is to run a very lean government. State taxes should be halved. Sacramento should then be made to live within their new reduced budget and get honest and get efficient. No more grifting. No more corruption. No more extravagant taxes.

They should charge those who own EV’s. Those who own gas vehicles are paying their share!

They don’t get gas tax from electric vehicles but there are taxes on electric utilities, so don’t act like they are not getting taxes. So add a tax at super chargers or for those who add home chargers. Make no mistake this to get more money as we have the highest gas tax in the country!

I appreciate Caltrans' efforts in maintaining our roads, but here's a thought: How about finding a way to charge electric car owners for road use instead of proposing a 30 cents per mile fee for everyone? Right now, gas car owners are footing the bill for road repairs while electric car owners cruise for free. It’s like asking someone who can't afford a Tesla to sponsor the road trip of someone who can. Let's level the playing field - equal roads, equal responsibility!

It will start out at 3 cents per mile, then as more EV's are used, it will go to 5 , then 8, then 10... there will be no escape.Keep in mind that the cost per mile that one can deduct for valid business travel is now 65 cents per mile, and you can see where this will lead...🤔

As long as they accept odometer values that's fine, that's not particularly invasive. Per mile charges are more fair. EVs create even more wear and tear than gas cars due to their increased weight.

Adding more fees won't solve the problem, they'll still have a deficit and corruption.

Seems fair; electric cars are heavier and likely cause more stress to the roads, not to mention guardrails are having to be replaced since current infrastructure can’t support their weight. …not to mention that electric cars need roads more than gasoline vehicles; haven’t seen anything electric that’s able to compete with a 4Runner, Defender, Wrangler, Grenadier, etc…

Regarding the transponders, she says “All Cal Trans will see is the number of miles”. Anyone who believes that is only fooling themselves. Aside from all of the obvious questions that haven’t been answered, this is just another example of how we are living under a dictatorship in this state. She says the state “shells out $8 billion repairing roads” but that isn’t “the state” spending the money. That’s OUR money being spent. The state has no money of its own, only that which it takes from us as tax payers and what they take in federal assistance (again, OUR money). And for that matter, why are our roads in such terrible condition? Anyone who has driven out of state knows that our neighboring states’ roads are in much better condition. At this stage of my life I’m not in a position to leave, but I don’t want to (nor can I afford to) stay.

This would work fine for someone like me who typically drives 3-4k miles a year with that $400 payment offsetting the gas taxes and in a 30mpg vehicle, but I know I am in the minority.

This is not an alternative to the Gas Tax, It is IN ADDITION TO the gas tax. People driving Real Automobiles with internal combustion engines will be paying both $2.50+ per gallon gas tax and whatever rediculas amount the Communist Governent in Commiefornia chooses to charge all wheeled vehicles for using the highway system, that they choose not to spend any money on for repairs and fixing other deterioration.

I live in CA and bought a Tesla model Y. My vehicle registration is about 3X times more than a gas powered car. I paid $750! I assumed this was to compensate for the loss in gas tax revenue. Now the authorities want more from EV drivers? That’s insane!

@@khantra4568 yes it was. Is that the reason for the high registration fee?
@khantra4568
@khantra4568 26 дней назад
@@lukasfoo yes, registration is determined by 0.65% of the purchase price/value of the vehicle plus fees from your county. Some counties will have higher fees than others. Anyone who bought the cyber truck as their first truck is going to get sticker shock from their registration because CA DMV will slap them with a weight fee and commercial fee.

Here is one for the group: the proposed $0.30 per mile road usage tax. Start with a car that gets 28 miles per gallon and a 20 gallon tank. Assume you fill up the tank 2 times every week. Also assume you currently pay $6 per gallon for fuel ($2 of which currently go to taxes). For each gallon of gas you use, you pay $8.40 in additional roadway usage taxes. (to go 28 miles) For each tank full of gas, you pay $168.00 in additional roadway usage taxes. (to go 560 miles) For a full year, you pay $17, 472.00 in additional roadway usage taxes. (to go 58, 240 miles) ... Don't like the total mileage amount? Cut it by 2/3rds. You trave; 19,413 miles per year. Now bring it all together... ... $4 per gallon cost of gas w/o taxes over a year = (4)(20)(2)(52) = $8,320.00 times (1/3) = $2,773.33 $10.40 per gallon in taxes over a year = (10.4)(20)(2)(52) = $21,632.00 times (1/3) = $7,210.66 versus the (2)(20)(2)(52)/3 = $1,386.66 we are currently paying. Percentage increase in "gas" taxes = (7210.66/1386.66)(100) = 520% Effective cost of gasoline becomes $14.40 per gallon. ... Comment: Luxury beliefs and virtue signaling assures economic collapse. With these costs, people are forced to drive a whole lot less, the total road tax revenue drops precipitously, the crisis only deepens. Never mind the general cost increases passed on by any business that uses gas to power vehicles.
