Went to rural Pennsylvania past weekend and Tacoma's were everywhere. I guess Americans got tired of American car companies rolling out $100k pickups that break down all the time.

My dad's 2000 Tundra recently hit 500K miles, still uses it every day for work. The reliability is unmatched. Part of it has to do with Toyota using the same relatively simple engines for many years across their line up, always refining them. The 4Runner has had the same engine for over 15 years.

I'd count it more like 22 years. The 1GR 4.0L V6 debuted in the 2003 4Runner and is still in the 2024 4Runner, it just found some modest improvements along the way such as dual vvti in 2010. The 5-speed automatic served 20 years from 2005-2024, and it's generally considered the most reliable truck transmission around. There's multiple million mile tacomas, and multiple million mile tundras. These vehicles just work.

All changed now. All new engines and transmissions. The new twin turbo V6 Tundra has had all types of failures. The new Taco, 4Runner and Land cruiser all are very expensive now. We will see how sales go.

Hilux’s are cheap and small which makes them more popular in undeveloped and developing countries, most of which are found in Africa. That said, take a trip to a country like Australia, Latin America, and New Zealand where driver needs are more respected and American made pickup trucks are all over the damn place. Hell, they even receive small business tax credits. The US Dollar is a strong currency compared to the Japanese Yen and the automakers here don’t have that many factories overseas due to financial problems stemming the Great Recession 15 years ago. This means any cars from Detroit are imported from the US which carries high taxes, similar to how Android is popular in poorer countries because they’re usually cheaper than expensive iPhones (priced at $1500 in America), rather than the quality of the phone itself. The person driving the Cadillac, Mustang, Camaro, or Dodge Charger overseas ends up being the richest guy in town as a result since he can afford the cost of the import tariffs and sales taxes.

It's crazy to think the Tacoma and the Ranger are in the same mid-size segment when the Tacoma would be too big outside of America. I think it's very simple how Tacoma became the bestselling mid-size. In 2005 Dodge dropped the ball and priced the Dakota 50% higher than it should have been. As a result, potential buyers went with the more capable Ram 1500 or moved over to the cheaper Tacoma. Rather than correcting the error, Dodge left the market after its bankruptcy in 2008.
@kmena05

As a vehicle, the Tacoma was inefficient, uncomfortable, and drastically outdated until the 2024 refresh. Here in the Northwest they still sell like hotcakes because of the reputation for reliability, and the way they hold value. The mid size trucks of today are the full size trucks of 20 years ago, and they just keep getting bigger. The reason full size trucks sell so well is that on average, they have the same fuel economy as mid-size trucks, while having more power and usability.
@plmn93
@plmn93 3 месяца назад
The midsize trucks of today are similar in exterior size to full size trucks 20 years ago, but they still are not even remotely close in bed or interior size or overall capability. As yo mention they are also barely more efficient, if at all, and with the big incentives now back on full size trucks they aren't that much cheaper either.

Ford certainly didn't do themselves any favors by foolishly taking the Ranger off the market for a decade or so leaving the mid-size truck market... and the other Domestic brands only sort of half-assed their mid-size trucks during that period. Luckily Ford came to their senses and brought the Ranger back a few years ago, but they lost a lot of ground during that period, especially with fleet vehicles and have a long way to be competitive with the Tacoma.

To be fair the frontier just tried copying the Tacoma/4runner formula when it got redesigned as the Tacoma and 4runner had always been outdated and ancient inside and yet are wildly popular. The Tacoma has been my desired vehicle for some time, although I do not have one. I already know how Toyota took on America's pickups. It appeals to people like me, who don't really want a pickup. Dudes whose lives would be much easier if they had a truck like, once a month. The newer Tacomas are quite large but for a long time it was the lone occupant in the medium-sized truck market. All trucks now are so big though that they're still mid-sized. And of course, well before the vehicle market went nuts, I also noticed how 20 year old Tacomas were still selling for a lot of money. There were no other used vehicles that were that old with that many miles that were commanding anywhere near that in price. At that point, for me to some extent, whether it has earned the reputation. isirrelevant, the reputation is there and it should expect to command a good price upon sale.

The only reason is winning is because they are not just listening to their customers, but also listening to their dealership network. Ford makes the maverick. the cheaper truck. Probably is the ford company likes to push the heavier, more profitable, higher margin F150s to the dealerships. While the dealers themselves are begging 🙏 ford to make more mavericks since they can’t sell the higher sticker F150s. Are you under the impression Nissan is going to run away with the market thanks to the n/a V6 in the Frontier? That 4cyl is worlds better than the prior V6, as is the 8-speed automatic. I assure you sales aren't going to go down. The sky is not falling. Lots of yokels guessed that the ecoboost V6 would be the end of F-150 supremacy in 2012--look at it now.

Engines over time can be fixed. The overly reliable V6s people are taunting had a miserable start in it's product cycle with blocks were discovered to have imperfectly sand casted, and certain engine variants had direct injection only which led to carbonization. This were fixed in time to produce the very reliable engines we see today. So I don't see the turbos as an issue, considering by the standards of a turbo, they are relatively understressed. Ford's 2.3 liter is pumping out 270hp and 310hp when Toyota's 2.4 is doing 270 and 228 on the base version. And Ford's 2.3 Ecoboost is regarded to be reliable. No, Toyota's big mistake is to forget it's blue collar core market in the US, and I say the US, because elsewhere in the world, with the release of the $12,000 Hilux Camp they have not forgotten the people who put them where they are now.

Japanese made a difference back then with small trucks, so Ford had to respond with Ranger, Chevrolet with S10. But modern pickup trucks grew too large, a small pickup is the same size as the 150 of yore. No wonder 20-year old Rangers and 30-year old Tacomas/Hilux are still around.
