Grew up on the East Side (111th and Ave. M) and went to Cal Park every single day in the summer in the late 1960s. At the time the lake was significantly lower and there was a beautiful crescent shaped beach between the Coast Guard station and the brewery (Falstaff, if I remember correctly). The beach appears to be underwater now due to the rising level of the Great Lakes (which are connected to the ocean). The vid at 3:37 is Indianapolis Boulevard and the elevated structure above is the Skyway, which allowed trucking a speedy way through the area to and from Indiana. Our favorite thing to do was to walk to Cal Park, making our first stop at the Mexican Inn--the triangular shaped building on the corner of 95th St--and get a bag of crispy, delicious homemade tacos (that cost 25 cents each!), and take them to the park and devour them. So good. Started my lifelong love of Mexican food, and one of the reasons I moved to California after college. I couldn't get enough of it and I eat it almost every day. Happy memories!
Thank you so much for sharing those detailed memories Carol ! I always wondered what that triangular building on 95th once was. I also never connected the rising sea levels with a rise in the Great Lake levels, something to think about. Hope you’re enjoying life in California, I hope to follow suit someday soon!
