See! Your reaction at the end, 18:53 , is why I’m convinced this is the best season of ‘Angel’! I’ve heard a lot of people discount it but I’d wager the biggest reason for this is the horizontal mambo had between Cordy and Connor and the extreme “ick” factor it generates.

It's not my favorite season, but I do love it and yeah, I really do think people discount this season way too much, and use the claim that Charisma was supposedly being punished with the storyline as justification, which I just don't see being true.

This season has some enjoyable stuff especially towards the end of the season but aside from the Ick factor there is also Conner himself and some other minor complaints about this season - so for me, it still ranks 4th. As for revenge accusations, im on the fence and it's actually refreshing that not everyone buys into the idea. I believe Joss was probably an ass and said everything to charisma that she accused him of, but sitting from his perspective it sounds like he was put in a tough spot (which doesn't excuse his behaviors and actions in anyway) but also doesn't mean we have to jump to conclusions about the plot either - or rather motives for the plot. It's been widely understood for a long time that Joss already knew where he wanted Angel to end up. It's also been understood that Joss is a Shakespeare fan and presumably mythology fan, if you consider Buffy S5 and some of Anya's lines. So writing the Opedius into the show might not have been the dis that people take it for. He also didn't answer Charisma's attempts to reach out and inform him, so it doesn't seem like he had much time to write a revenge plot. He was also writing Buffy and firefly AND there are other writers on the show who would have been capable of input and feedback. I'm not saying he didn't write a revenge plot, just that we really don't know or have a way of knowing for sure. It wouldn't be the first time he wrote oversexualized ickiness either, so motives are questionable.

@@samanthas8340 I could be wrong, but I somehow got the impression that most of the S4 storyline was in place long before CC became pregnant, and likely a good bit of it was filmed beforehand, too. I think the changes were bringing in another actress to play the Big Bad, having a pregnant CC "give birth" to it, and her being pretty much out of commision for the rest of the season. Consider what sort of acting chops Charisma could have showcased if it was her instead of Gina Torres. (And having that derailed could have been part of what made Whedon so frustrated, leading him to do what he did. Doesn't excuse him in the slightest, but it makes it at least sensible.)

@@samanthas8340 Oh, I was NOT insinuating he wasn't a dick to her about it. I just don't believe he'd jeopardize the show quality by writing specifically for revenge, if he'd really wanted to punish her that way, just fire her, or even make her life a living hell on set... not 'write her character badly'.

Angelus' return really kicked off an incredible run of episodes to me, the way Angelus wielded his words like a scalpel deliberately making the worse wounds that managed to stain everybody. Again, Angelus is my favorite villain in the Buffyverse because he's deadly without throwing a punch & as you pointed out Angelus takes such joy in his mindgames. And it somehow manages to get even wilder going forward.

I think they wrote a few of those lines for Angelis just so that the audience would not adopt the villain as an adorable anti-hero.

“Are you sure she’s safe with him?” When the Rock Demon asked that of Angel, it was playing on Angel’s feelings for Cordy and making him doubt the situation more than he already was. At least that’s how I always saw it.

Dakara: C'mon Lilah, you're better than this." Moments later: Lilah is murdered by Cordelia. I loved that the reaction didn't happen until Cordelia saying why she did it. Like she was both in denial and didn't understand what had happenned until then.

Angelus always knows just how to twist an emotional knife for maximum carnage. You can literally see the moment Fred loses respect for Wesley when Angelus reveals Wesley had been sleeping with Lilah.

I think this particular batch of Angels episodes are brilliant, and Calvary is no exception, with Angelus back to his evil best playing mind games with Gunn and Fred. When Lilah comes through the sewers to see Angelus again we see his pure evil side. Gunn eventually realises that Fred it not fully committed to him. Fred tells Wesley that her and Gunn were not together anymore, and Wesley of course has always been deeply in love with Fred. This it seems was always the case, and perhaps they are a better fit, but I think we all feel sorry for Gunn and the way he found out. We think Cordelia has restored his soul, even Lorne after hearing him sing Raindrops Are Falling On My Head is convinced it is not Angelus. However, we see him to his Oscar part, the opposite to S3 BTVS episode Enemies where he fooled Faith pretending to be Angelus when he was really Angel. A great twist when Lilah meets her fate not from Angelus, but from Cordelia. Another brilliant episode to follow this and another, and another, and another!, and Season 5 is even better than this!

I love that you mention the great writing. No spoilers of course but for me, the entire arc starting with Connor's return is the best ever. P.S. If you don't like the character, it's okay...you're not suppose to. Feel empathy, sure. What he brings to the story as a catalyst however, I love.

Take a closer look at the weapon Cordy used to kill Lilah. The answers to your questions were given in the episode if you rewatch it but are easily missed on the first watch

I just have to say, the assumptions you made around 20 minutes (i.e. right after the watching part ends)... it's like, for explaining an icky situation, you imagined something even ickier... Cause Cordelia posessed by Darla, if it looks cool on the paper, paired with the assumption you made right after that, that we never had Cordelia at all in this season, and it was the posessed version that did the mambo-jumbo with Connor... I mean, I get why people are uneased at the idea of Cordelia herself doing it... she's the closest thing Connor had of a mother, like Angelus said. But Darla IS actually his mother... so yiiiiirk !

Love the braids! Now we know that the beast is working for something else. Angellus is free, and Cordelia is possessed? Don't know if it applies to souls, but the conservation of energy states that energy can't be destroyed, simply transformed from one state to another. Again, don't know if that applies. The "vision" led them to cast a sort of misdirect spell. Angellus would have mystically shown opposite of what was directed at him, like Lornes reading. At any rate, Angellus is lose in a city that's eternally dark. Let the games begin.

Ah, you knew it. Not in the sense of you know what was going on, but you knew something was going on that you didn't know about. (I think that's the way Willow put it about Xander and Cordelia being together, back the first time Angelus got free). I suppose it has been subtle that there's been something wrong with Cordelia ever since she got back, and by subtle I mean that they've been all but hitting you on the head with a hammer. In retrospect, that is.

Season 4 is so freakin good!!! People really need to get over, "it's creepy". From 4.8 to 4.22 it's non-stop action. Every episode matters in this season

It's not all about the creepy factor, but knowing what we know about why JW decided to do what he did to Cordelia. And that also confirms that Charisma had a very good reason not to even tell JW she was pregnant right away. That's why I hate the whole season except for the next 3 episodes that Dakara will be watching. I already hated the second half of season 3 after Cordy's birthday, but even that episode became tainted by what goes on in season 4.
