From an overall storytelling standpoint, Season 4 was a mess. The whole idea that Angel and Angelus are 2 completely different person with a different set of memories was baffling and at odds with everything else before. Then there's the whole, "all that evil and death is just to birth someone who just occasionally eats people to bring about world peace" shtick was both creative and somehow even more disappointing than Glory on Buffy

@@InfernosReaper I mean they clearly are not. Its just a comforting headcannon Scooby Gang adopted to first allow the idea of Angel and later when Buffy needed to rationalize it to herself selfish desire to outright wash away all that stuff Angelus said to her, others, and killing her Watcher's serious love interest. Thats why, hard as he tries they never accept or devalue Spike's attempts to be channel himself into good, or showing his clear remnants of humanity. There are little things (mind I only watched the whole thing through once, and several times aborted another) that betray Angel as a fraud, but at the same time he desperately wants to buy into when everyone worships him as special, so he guiltily (or selfishly) laps it up and never corrects. Also, that lie partially stemmed from the what Watcher Council intentionally teaches its disciples and more adamantly Slayers, so they kill with clear conscious and zelaotry, not delving if the particular vamp has enough humanity left, has motivation to overcome new darker urges and removal of moral compas ('this is wrong' impulse control). Buffy was also taught the same about demons, which while dangerous and a lot really do go crazy with power, or have horrific standarts of what is normal, are just people of other dimentions stuck there as L.A. and later seasons of Buffy prove. So 'early' Angel Case just got adapted to have unprecedented facts included without disturbing the whole narrative, to keep the Slayer as a remorseless killing machine who follows orders

@@FlamesAndShadows I really don't see how that explains Season 4 of Angel where they literally expel his soul specifically to gain information that Angelus has, because unlike before, he is treated as a separate entity entirely with his own memories.

@@InfernosReaper Thats a snag. On the reverse Angelus never treated Sunnydale or L.A. expanded casts as strangers and was always armed with very specific knowledge allowing him to mentally torment them by stripping down mental defences, revealing damaging secrets to sow discontent in ally ranks, pushing buttons where it hurt or would provoke recklessness he could exploit. Headcannons could be made why is it Angelous specifically that is privvy to all the knowledge or why Angel remembers the time as him and people he wronged, but can't or chooses not to this specific one. But then I've seen people taking at face value a lot of 'soul rules with clauses for one very special vampire' pretty often here and there (Spangel shippers mainly. Coincidence?), so maybe co-author who only had written the start of that ark and fishing Angel out of the sea episode by then just took that at face value. Also there is a almost nothing in common between Angel and Liam for some reason.

@@InfernosReaper Edit: Maybe since resouling was coupled with a curse it possibly made sure he would remember all the unnerving bits and stuff to be guilty for, maybe enhance it even so it would not jumble together or fade away. Again with stupid headcanon-y unfactual things, but an argument can be made they also did something to ensure it would definitely hurt, since Darla and Spike were deffinitely affected, but as people do. reacted all in their own way, while not getting their souls with extras. Liam was a selfish priveledged dick, with perfectly intact self esteem from what we've seen, there was not guarantee he would not turn at least partial sociopath, develop adrenaline addiction or a kink to the rush of killing or tormenting, not get over it in the long run or turn sorry instead of revengeful. Maybe he was MADE feel what his victims of past did, similar to what Cordelia experienced in Season 1 finale that kick started her wanting to be more empathetic? Also maybe, and I'm getting back to the topic, only good or neutral memories he had of the past were only the ones tainted by his future actions if it made the emotional pain even larger. Like how pure and loving his sister was, and what his vampire self did to her. Having possibly fun sex with gorgeous woman surrounded by dismembered corpsed of the family they just killed, etc. Possibly its why Liam we saw never resembled Angel, since we only been shown his mistakes, bad sides and how he made people hate him, while the real one had more dimentions we now saw in both vamp selves. Maybe the knowledge they sought in Season 4 was gained in a time pretty uneventful on suffering and gore, or even a fun bro time with a fellow demon, so it was blocked by the curse as unimportant or even harmful to its integrity. Just a theory I just came up with though. Sorry for rambling :)

the question is, was it better off without her character generally or simply better off without her character as portrayed in season 4.

@@yamiyomizuki exactly. it’s worth noting that cordelia was possessed for most of s4 so saying the show was better without her after s4 makes no sense bc s4 wasn’t her at all
