Richard Sherman interviews Hall of Fame WR Calvin Johnson AKA Megatron. The two NFL legends discuss Calvin's early retirement from the Detroit Lions, what the Lions can do to fix their rocky relationship, and how Calvin felt watching former Lions QB Matthew Stafford win the Super Bowl after getting traded from Detroit. Calvin also shares stories about facing Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, what made him choose Georgia Tech over Georgia, and why he almost grabbed his gun when he was about to hear he'd been voted into the Hall of Fame.

I was a Detroit Lions fan since a little girl and I put up with the lack of competence by Ownership, consistently poor decision making, and year after year of losing. I can no longer stomach the way that they treated players that in addition to their fantastic ball playing and off the chart skill levels, exuded admirable character. After 40 year, I am no longer a Lions fan. Thank you Calvin, for the great seasons you provided. As a former Lions fan and a forever Calvin fans I wish him nothing but the best.

I don’t blame megatron for staying away from the team. They demanded that repayment because they were mad and I get why they were mad at his sudden retirement. But at the same time when you demand an amount like $1.6M as an owner with a net worth of $1B+ that money is so little in your world it was obviously demanded in spite more than being demanded because it was a large amount of money that made sense to demand being paid back to the team. It kinda says a lot about the teams culture and why they’ve never won anything despite having one of the greatest RB ever, WR ever, and having a great QB like a Stafford for so long. It’s striking to see a guy leave the team and explode in numbers and win a Super Bowl immediately after leaving the team. It’s telling if the culture of the franchise when two of the greatest players to ever play chose to leave the league early and in their prime rather than continue playing for the team. Consider that Gronk told the patriots that if they were going to trade him there then he was going to retire rather than play for that team. It says a lot that players would rather leave the game than continue playing, and making millions, if they have to play for this team. It’s telling that two do their best players ever had major riffs with the team to where they wouldn’t do anything with the team. Eventually they mended things with Barry. It’s also wild that they’d pay megatron his bonus back but only if he did a job for them to earn it back. It shows they don’t understand that it isn’t actually about the money but the respect or lack of it felt by megatron because of them demanding the money be repaid and then expecting him to do a job to get that money back from them. Compare how the lions handled his retirement versus how the colts handled things when Luck retired. The Colts could have made Luck repay them over $24M between his signing bonus and roster bonus when he left the team. Consider also back when Luck retired it was literally right before the season. He actually fucked them over a bit for doing it when he did. Calvin retired a month before the Draft. They had the Draft and an entire off-season to move on from megatron. Lucks money was actually an amount of money that if the team demanded being repaid could be seen as being more than petty. Even that sum for an owner like an Irsay who is worth $3.9B doesn’t need that money but at least the amount is substantial enough to make some sense. Or consider that most teams don’t make players repay but the lions did. Or how they sued Barry Sanders to get some of his back. The Lions are a clown organization in how they’ve handled these things. As for trading either of the players the rationale to do it makes sense. If the choice for them is to trade them or just let them retire the obvious move would be to trade them. Your choice is either lose the player to retirement and get nothing for them being gone or you trade them to a team and get something in return for them. If teams know they’re threatening to retire you’re clearly not going to get top market for the trade but if you’re losing the player no matter what it clearly makes sense to get something over nothing. The teams stubbornness in approaching these things is one of the many reasons they’ve never contended for a championship in anybody’s recent memory. And seeing how they treat legends who played for them why would any top talent in free agency ever choose to go to Detroit knowing how they operate? They’re the definition of a penny smart but dollar dumb organization. And until they finally change that culture they’ll never become a top team in the league. Culture as we’ve seen time after time is a major factor in whether teams contend for yesrs or remain basement dwellers.

I disagree. Calvin said very directly that his body was talking to him, and he had given himself 10 years to play. He retired after 9. Hecalso admitted that he might have reconsidered playing longer if he felt the team he was playing for was capable of winning a SB. But getting a SB ring is hard to do. He was under cobtract with the Lions and they were under no obligation to release him. And how many Super Bowl caliber teams would have been willing to pay crazy money and 1st round draft picks to get him? Calvin could have left the Lions after his rookie contract had ended. Instead he took the money from the Lions and signed away his career with the team.

All that losing made him retire early but was gonna be loyal to the Lions till the end. I wished at the end of every season he got traded to a better team. But all in all, he was better and a more complete WR than any and everyone that suited up. Only Moss and Owens, his peers while playing, have the cache to say they were better but he was the GOAT WR for me. Damn I wish he got traded to NE or Seattle back in the days.

@@BBBYpsi Gee, I seem to remember when Andrew Luck abruptly retired from the Colts, Jim Irsay said flatly that whatever salary/bonuses that were disbursed to the QB would not be gone after. As far as Calvin requesting a trade, what's so wrong or illegal about that? The Lions stupidly fired Jim Caldwell after a 9-7 record, hired two idiots who turned turned the team upside down into worse than they already were, etc.. He was tired of the incompetence and the losing, especially after the way Jim Caldwell was disrespected by the Lions. When Matthew Stafford "quietly demanded" a trade he was accommodated and sent to a Super Bowl ready team and 🏆! I'm happy and rooted for him, no shade! If I remember he had time left on his contract as well. The Lions took extra care not to waste his career any worse than they already had. Hmmm.... People seem to forget it's a business for these owners they make money off of it. They were already billionaires before they bought the team and there's a reason for that. Andrew luck got his money because he was actually hurt playing football And could not physically play anymore. Calvin Johnson was declining fast anyways. Here is the question I wish they would have talked about: What if the 2014 12-4 Lions beat the Cowboys in the "picked up the PI flag" like they should have, and the Lions went to Seattle that year to play the Hawks instead of Carolina (due to lower seed)? That would have been a GAME, man. The Lions matched up very well with the Seahawks that year. The very next year, they had the "bat it out the endzone" game where Calvin fumbled at the goaline but KJ Wright batted it out the back of the end zone. Lions should have had that one. That one was without Suh, who left for Miami that offseason. What would have a 2014 playoff game looked like between these two? Would have been epic IMO. Much the same way the Packers game was to go to the SB that year.

Without Suh, Tolluck, Fairly & Levy was hurt. 4 major parts of that great defense

Calvin proves it right there... Stafford threw way too hard. It’s too bad he never learned how to use touch in the red zone. Goff has much better touch if you ask me.

I've always respected CJs play I was a closet fan of his and the lions ever since being a little puppy watching Barry Sanders. But I grew up a bears fan so it's always bears first. Even tho the rivalry I couldn't hate Detroit. Detroit is a strange team their record year in and year out doesn't always speak volumes they could have been 3-13 or 3-14 and just like the bears this year 7 of those losses could have been by 1 score or less. The lions are a tough and resilient team just like the bears always seem to be a couple pieces short. And the refs seem to hate da bears and lions for some reason. Hope the lions do right by you CJ much respect oh and P.S. I was at work that one game ( cough the CJ rule game cough) and yes at the time I was happy seeing da bears won til I watched the highlight during the later games ( 2pm where I live) and seen the catch they ruled incomplete I was not happy we won off a poor call I personally feel that was a catch even tho the rule technically states no because of going to the ground their should be better judgement with the going to the ground with how your played out. Good luck, stay positive, you're doing great. Much respect

Don't ever be a landlord... That's too American. Better to put a team together and put the work in to see the results later on. Capital... America is a very capitalistic place and the reason why it is so great as black folks to reach this Pinnacle is because for most of this country's history black people were refused capital, it was always made very hard to acquire and the other manipulative cultural game that the Americans play to keep others struggling so it's amazing, the perseverance... But on a personal note, it's nice to see Calvin in such high spirits because when he first retired he was not doing so well, the very American Detroit Lions made his retirement is difficult as possible and yeah so it's good to see him extend into the cannabis sector and doing things that he decides is best for him
