Prior to 1947 those who weren’t from Hindustan simply referred to themselves as the region they were form. Sindhs, punjab (the one in modern day Pakistan) gilgit, balsitan, waziristan, balochistan. None of the people here would be considered Indian or call themselves Indian . This is the equivalent of saying a kurdish person is just iraqi or an Assyrian is just Iraqi/Syrian
