Wow! Thank you. I have been working on these things for years and have struggled to understand this simple process. Your video taught me more in 2 minutes than years of reading the damn manuals and other videos. Thanks a million. Well done sir.

Great video! I have seen others post videos adjusting the chain while the engine is running. -A great way to destroy it. Yours is clear and easy to understand. TDC on the firing stroke to slacken the chain for adjustment. Thanks!!
@Krankie_V
@Krankie_V Год назад
It's not TDC though, it's a bit before TDC at the point where the ignition fires

A Motorcycle Nut, I read some of your replies and of course watched the video. Very good, and most importantly; CORRECT information. Thank You. I love the XR200R engine, for some reason I love the design, how compact, how simple, and how peppy the cute little engine is. Now, if I could just adapt fuel injection to it...

The cam tensioner is on a spring that can stick all you are doing is allowing the tensioner to do what it was designed to do. You aren't adjusting a thing just freeing a Honda flaw in an otherwise great motor.

a bit unclear to me still. By pushing the screwdriver down a few times is what sort of resets it? You do not have to open up the case, as you said, to see it? So line up top by matching the line, then push with screwdriver a bit? thanks
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 10 месяцев назад
That is correct. Pushing with the screw driver just makes sure that the locking mechanism released and set the proper tension.

so you did not adjust anything just push it down. is there a screw inside to turn to adjust and which way do you turn it to take up slack in the chain. Thanks
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 2 года назад
The adjustment is spring loaded. The clamping mechanism sticks sometimes. I'm just pushing on the adjusting rod to make sure that it is not sticking. The spring inside sets it to the right tension.

Isn’t the rod threaded? Could you insert a bolt that first and pull up on it if it’s extra loose

If the timing chain skips a tooth while its running you will have bigger problems. Don't do it.

Thanks a lot for this video, had no idea the function of that rubber thing. Mine is a Honda tlr200 and from this screws some oil is coming up ( not a lot but it's clearly some oil vapor is sticking the area around the rubber tap ) Could you please give me some advice on that? Thanks a lot in advance. Love the review.
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 8 лет назад
+Eduard Casellas The 14mm bolt has an o-ring on it. If you unscrew it completely you can replace the o-ring and it should stop leaking, It can also leak from the 6mm plug. it has an aluminum crush washer that might need to be replaced.
@eduard742
@eduard742 8 лет назад
Can be done with the engine turned off? No need to turn on whilst adjusting the chain? Thank you.
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 8 лет назад
+Eduard Casellas Only do this with the engine turned off. If the timing chain is really loose or stretched it could jump a tooth on the sprockets and make a mess out of your engine. Eat valves and stop running and we don't really want to go there!!!!!
@eduard742
@eduard742 8 лет назад

my xr200 will start and idle fine, but past a quarter throttle its just boggy. carb is clean. any ideas?
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 5 лет назад
Jet needle set wrong. Wrong float level. Air leak somewhere. Dirty or old air filter. Bad spark plug cap. Plugged muffler. There are a couple of things for you to check. Read your spark plug after you run it to figure out what's going on.

Why does this have to be done on dead center fire stroke? What would happen if I didn't do it dead center fire stroke?
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 4 года назад
It doesn't have to be exactly on TDC, but at that position I know the cam is not trying to open the valves.
@JH-jd8ip

@@Amotorcyclenut weird because the oem Honda repair manual states to have engine idling and loosen the larger nut
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 4 года назад
That might be a way to do it when every thing in the engine is new. But ask your self this question. What is going to happen if all the parts are a bit worn and you loosen the Cam chain with the engine running and the timing chain skips a tooth or two? I'll take the safe way on an old bike.

Thanks for your video, this is great. I've had this bike on the shelf for awhile. I suspect my cam chain may have slipped on my first ride. Does this sound sound like a slipped cam chain to your or perhaps something else? I'm not terribly handy with these and would love your input. Thank you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IOm-WkMdVhE.html

Wow, that's hammering pretty good. It might be more than a timing chain slap. Better tighten the valves too. Check the Oil also.
