CAM NEWTON: OVERRATED OR DOMINANT?

Cam Newton is one of the most polarizing QB's in NFL history. He was the biggest star in the sport for a time, but as they say, stars that burn the brightest burn out the fastest. After several injuries robbed him of his effectiveness, Cam's days as an NFL QB are likely over. So I decided it's time to look back at his career and give it a proper breakdown. This is the longest video I've ever made and the most effort I've ever put into making a video. I hope you all enjoy it, even if you don't agree with my conclusion.

the sad thing about Cam is in his 2021 comeback I remember one specific play. It was his big return game, he had a phenomenal rushing TD in the redzone where he hit the edge, broke tackles, and crossed the plane. It was clear that he was still an athletic guy who could get it done with his legs, but his arm was a shell of what it once was and he simply couldn't throw accurately anymore after his injury and surgery. If Cam never had that shoulder injury I think he would still be playing at a high level today

As a massive Panthers fan, this was a fun, yet bittersweet trip down memory lane. Cam Newton is one of my favorite athletes of all time and witnessing his prime week to week was magical. All of that being said, Cam was a quarterback with clear flaws. He wasn’t very accurately, he made questionable decisions often resulting in turnovers, and took a lot of sacks. In the end, Cam’s careers feels like a massive what if and one that ended much sooner than it should, but he’s a major reason why I love the game of football and put my favorite team on a national stage and for that he will always have my respect. At least it was fun while it lasted. Great Video as always, Barry. 💙🖤

Me, a Panthers fan, seeing Barry make an hour long vid on Cam: "Alright, let's do this!" All jokes aside, this videos was well-put and gave me a bittersweet ride of nostalgia. Well done, Barry. @tomretallick9620 if he had a real offensive mind, that's more into completion % and not worrying about the old school schemes that Schula was giving him, he probably would've been selected to more pro bowls and would've had every season with over a 60 completion percentage.
@tomretallick9620
@tomretallick9620 Год назад
@@4392amtrak the scheme wasn't great, but in Shula's defense he did pretty good with the weapons he had. There were no short yardage YAC guys in between Steve Smith and CMC. All that offense had were deep threats, a posession TE and power running. The combo of Cam and Stewart running with play action deep shots was probably their best option. I blame Dave Gettleman, who cut Steve Smith, drafted Kelvin Benjamin over Davante Adams and Devin Funchess over Jarvis Landry

Also Panthers fan here. Excellent analysis in my opinion, especially the ultimate conclusion. No one knows how Cam's career would have unfolded if TJ Watt hasn't hit him dirty in 2018 (and of course it drew no penalty, but I digress). And yes, he was returning to his MVP self that season, you're the first person I see remember that. So, in conclusion, Cam's story is, sadly, much more a tale of what could have been than of what really was. Also, I believe some of his talent was wasted under Rivera, he's not an offesive-minded coach and kind of outdated IMO - and he and his coaching staff are the main ones to blame for the negligence to nurse Cam's injury properly and consequently for his poor health in the end of his career
@4392amtrak
@4392amtrak Год назад
And don't forget about Mike Shula. His playbook was more of an old school approach, which wasn't check down friendly. What that system was mainly about was the deep ball. Cam didn't have a rb to throw short passes to until McCaffrey came, and even with him there, Shula was still the OC. It wasn't until next year that Carolina got Norv as the new OC in what turned out to be Cam's best passing season with him there.

While I watched every game I was too young to look at Cam's rushing TD numbers beyond what they were and you make a interesting point about him taking those from RB's. While he wasn't dominant I think his injuries really screwed him especially 2016 and 2017, but hey that's the NFL. As a long-time defender of his I actually 100% agreed with the ranking you gave him at the end as far as who you compared him to- I don't think he was dominant but he made good memories and especially growing up watching someone play with so much joy was awesome even in the losses. As a panthers fan, super fair final verdict and I appreciated your comments about his impact and the overblowing of his not diving on the football. Agreed, not hall of fame level but near that bottom of high tier level like Philip Rivers. Only two points I’d counter: 1) Him only having three winning seasons doesn’t mean he wasn’t a winner. If you look at his third season (when QBs typically finish the development phase) to when he got injured in 2018, he had 3 winning seasons, 2 losing seasons, and 1 season that started winning by a sizable margin, only for him to receive an injury he ended up playing through that essentially killed his whole career. Anything after 2018 I don’t even count. Dude was never able to come back from that one. So in the seasons he really was Cam, his season win/loss totals were 3.5 wins to 2 losses. Pretty solid. 2) Have to disagree with your stance that his running TDs being short yardage lowers its impressiveness and that if some of the other great running QBs had more goal to go running touches they could’ve shown similar numbers. If they could have, they would have. But they didn’t, because they couldn’t. Their skillsets benefitted middle of the field plays where the defenses were more spread out and they could use their quickness to run past players. What made cam such an elite runner was his power and ability to run through players in the more cramped areas of the field. The way he gets into the end zone doesn’t make the frequency he got into the end zone any less impressive to me. Great vid Barry. Thanks for taking the time to dive so deeply into the career of the football player that made the most impact on my life and on the lives of those in my city.

I do think you need to mention that Cam never had a great supporting cast like alot of the guys you mentioned so let’s take into account who was blocking for him and who was catching his passes over the years

Let's go down the list , since he forgot 1. Ted ginn 2. Crotchety 3. Devin " I GOT CRAMPS " funchess 4. Kevin " I BIG BONEDED" Benjamin 5. Kelin klay 6. Russle sheppard All of those recivers were third / 4th string practice squad recivers cam carried in parts of his career , prime steve Smith ( Reciver ) & Greg Olsen ( TE ) were the ONLY reliable catchers cam EVER had as a QB : DJ solid , but during his rookie year ? He kept dropping the ball but still managed to be solid , even after cams departure but yea : Cam got HOED Big time , and is now blackballed from the leauge for good .

@@TheDON914 yeah lol and let’s not mention the ones from that one year in NE, Panthers brass never did Cam many favors over the years at WR and OL once Gross and Smith went. And to be fair Cam really didn’t have Smith long or at his best. If Cam had a great Oline or at least one great WR during his prime that would’ve made a big difference in my opinion

@camarapeople11 he almost beat the Saints in the playoffs with practice squad receivers and with Greg Olsen with a bad foot and a rookie C-Mac being his only two great receivers that game

Cam is what I consider the best example of a quarterback picked first overall. Not every first overall pick needs to win a ring or be a hall of famer (though it helps), but every first overall pick should leave an impact the same way Cam impacted the Panthers, at bare minimum.
