This is a video I shot to show and demonstrate how the Cam Ranger system works with my DSLR camera. It allows for remote viewing and shooting wirelessly using my iPad, iPhone or Android device.

Bens Viewfinder, it's been over 3 week. How about sharing us the serial number on your Camranger?

Hi! Thanks so much for the review! I'm planning to get this but it's a hefty sum so we're trying to collect as much info as we can. I was wondering if live view is able to reflect the settings in real time? the lighting/exposure looked fine on the ipad but then turned out too dark and the next one overexposed. Thanks so much in advance!

Orracle C No, live view in app is no different than live view on camera. You don't know what you have until after the exposure is complete. It is a bit on the expensive side but if you shoot a lot with slower shutter speeds, specifically architecture/interior photography, the app is almost a must.

Orracle C Exactly what Antoine Cunningham said it does not show you in real time your depth of field and exposure changes etc. I am sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I honestly don't know why I got notified that he answered your ? and I didn't get notified that you asked one. This isn't really the greatest tool in the world for the non seasoned shooter. Knowing your situations and being able to set your camera at at least a decent starting point makes a huge difference. You can of course change on the fly but transfers between the Cam Ranger and you iPad are a bit slow so if it is something fast and important you won't have a lot of time to fiddle. If it helps much my basic goal is to always shoot f8, 1/125th of a second exposure and I adjust my ISO to make those two things happen if in uncertain situations and then I adjust from there if I can.

Is Cam Ranger the iPad software the hardware or a combo of both?

Are you shooting to an SD card for storage and only using the tablet for preview? Because 23+ seconds is not acceptable in my book to wait for each shot to come up full frame. Can this handle bursts of shots for fast action photography?

+john No I photographing using a Nikon D3x and am shooting CF cards. The data rate has to do with the fact that I don't have it compressing files as it sends them and I shoot RAW so the file sizes are nearly 50 megabytes large.

+Bens Yes I understand you are not compressing and they are 50 MB. But 30 seconds to bring it up is not acceptable. The product is great for camera control and a better alternative to the nikon wt-5a where you can only shoot when you are in a wifi area. But when it comes to transferring photos I am going to wait for Link coming out in November and get them in 3 seconds. Great thorough review though. thank you

And here is the exact same thing for $30. I have three units plus three pan and tilt heads for remote video shoots. www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-MR3040-Wireless-Portable-Compatible/dp/B0088PPFP4/ref=sr_1_1

+Peter Liddicoat (Visual Reality) how do you get HDMI/PCLink into that device? it seems to be USB 2.0 and Ethernet sockets only? I can see on amazon people are using it with Nikons but I just want to know how before I part with cash. I have a D610 do you know if that has the right ports to connect? It has HDMI out for Liveview and a USB micro port for controlling the camera… I use it with a Swivl for time-lapse sequences. The Swivl isn't very stable and the refuse to update the software they shipped with it to get the bugs out and improve it so could you link to the pan and tilt heads you are using please. It would be great to get some pan/tilt heads that aren't to exxy that could be preset with a few goto positions i.e. A, B C D ideally from within some VisionMixing software like BonixTV for OS X. It's quite extensible with software layers I can write in Quartz Composer so if the motorised heads have a serial bus or DMX or something it's probably possible to rewrite a preset controller that can be activated from within say Bonix TV. Thanks. www.swivl.com
