When I was a baby my mom would sing in khmer to me. When I was older and asked what it meant she told me the words don’t make sense they just sound nice together
I'm from Indonesia. Look for a song called "Hasan Ditiro cuco pahlawan". It's an an Acehnese house/turbofolk song (Aceh is a province in Indonesia) which praised Hasan Di tiro, leader of Acehnese secession movement from Indonesia, it resemblance to Yugoslavia wartime songs was a surprise for me. For a background information, after the fall of New Order regime, the late 90s to 2000s Indonesia was basically feared by the people here as "2nd Yugoslavia".
This song has absolutely nothing to do with democratic kampuchea or anything political at all for that matter. This song is the cambodian equivalent to America's southern country folk music.
fictional lyric about a regime that killed 1 million people: look at the owl(pol pot) original lyric, in theory, lighter: *5 RABBITS WERE SELLING DRUGS*
True but that was mostly because of the civil war and the famine. It greatly improved after 1976 and so did infant mortality rate, excess death rate, malaria etc.
Love how the Khmer word for weed កញ្ឆា (Kanhchhea) is so similar to the Sanskrit word गञ्जा (Ganja). The Khmer language was heavily influenced by Sanskrit.
It’s also why “ganja” is used in Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean. Indians were brought there as indentured servants to replace African slaves after they were freed from chattel slavery.
In fact, 1960s and 1970s Cambodia (before the Khmer Rouge of course) is considered to be the golden age of Cambodian rock. Singers like Sinn Sinamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Yol Aularong were among the most popular icons of Cambodian music at that time, but all of them were unfortunately killed during the reign of Pol Pot.
omg I spent weeks looking for the actual lyrics to this song (which I knew had nothing to do with Pol Pot), and I finally found now i can be at peace thank u 🙆♀️
I used to feel shameful for enjoying this song because I thought it was glorifying Pol pot and Khmer Rouge, but now I can rest easy knowing it is just about drug addicted animals 🤠
Thank you to all the people who were able to translate this properly. It was ridiculous how the Khmer Rouge sympathizers associated this with Pol Pot. Many Cambodians have been complaining about the troll lyrics in the comment section it was sad
@@DeliriumMaps the intent was pretty much just trolling. The memes and the people who post them weren’t being serious so I don’t really the issue here. This is normal behavior.
@@NGOANHKHOIA- i don't know about your humor but joking about some dictator that has done terrible things beyond insanity with a song that has nothing to with it that could be your childhood song is f*ck up dude, and i don't find it funny at all

The funny thing about this song and a lot of old khmer songs for that matter, is that the lyrics don’t make much sense and there’s sometimes weird references, they just sound nice together and it’s funny

the original letter is a little lighter, for example the words "mariajuana" which are replaced by "weed", or "drugs which are replaced by "prescription"
I feel that the song sat tee touy and the song genjer-genjer (Indonesian song) have something in common, namely they are associated with communism even though they have nothing to do with communism Genjer-genjer is basically a song composed by Indonesian farmers that describes their suffering under Japanese colonial rule. But because the Indonesian communist party often uses this song in election campaigns, it is now associated with the Indonesian communist party or PKI. I don't know much about the background of the sat tee touy song but a communist who has a RU-vid channel called comrade Hellas made a video about pol pot then used this song as music Then non-Cambodians misunderstood and thought that this song was a Khmer Rouge song. greetings from Indonesia
Yea , i feel it too . I mean this song is more Make disturbing than genjer genjer . i could imagine of how much horrible things happen when this song played .
@@Pancasilaist8752 wouldn't playing that stuff have you arrested? I know that Indonesia has an authoritarian streak and suhartos propaganda still affects the country, I watched a documentary of how some perpetrators of the genocide are seen as heroes today
@@toasterirl2920 Not really, there are many more genjer-genjer videos on RU-vid that can still be watched. But yes, many still associate it with the communist party.

As a Cambodian, I can confidently say that some of the translations are incorrect. For example, in "កង្កែបនិងគីង្គក់វាលួចជក់កញ្ឆា" it displayed "frogs and lizards are stealing marijuana" while it's actually "frogs and *toads* are *secretly using drugs*" but hey, pretty close. Another one is "យែ*អា*ក្បាលខ្មៅដឹងតែអង្គុយផឹកស្រា". The "ក្បាលខ្មៅ" is referring to the Toad, not the black hair or anything. Also, "យែ", in my understanding, is a mistranslation. and so, the whole sentence put together means "this bird only sits there and drinks alcohol". I can go on and on about this, so I'm just going to put my version of translating from Khmer to English for you. "Five ___ rabbits are arranging to sell drugs, x2" "Frogs and toads are secretly smoking marijuana, x2" "𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘯, this guy (human)/BIRD only sits there and drinks alcohol, x2" "while drunk, not chasing the rain, it (the toad) cursed to the frog's mother, x2" "a short-necked female animal, she always ran to look for her mother, x2" ("សត្វញីកខ្លី") "digging the farm area, she buried a jar of wine, x2" "This dude (toad) 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘸 lost his way to the river, x2" "running into the jar of wine, it spilled everywhere, x2" *Khmer version* "ទន្សាយ ___ ប្រាំ សារេថ្នាំលក់" "កង្កែបនិងគីង្គក់វាលួចជក់កញ្ឆា" "យីអាក្បាលខ្មៅវាដឹងតែអង្គុយផឹកស្រា" "ស្រវឹងមិនដឹងវស្សាវាជេរម្ដាយកង្កែប" "សត្វញីកខ្លី, ស្រីរត់រកតែមែ" "កកាយពេញស្រែនាងកប់ក្រឡស្រាថូ" “អា__ក្បាលខ្មៅវង្វេងផ្លូវមកអូរ” "រត់ចូលស្រាថូរកំពប់កំប៉ាងស្រមាម" In my opinion, they shouldn't have used google translate to translate the Khmer words into English. My translation is not perfect, but it is a bit more accurate than what the original composer was saying. And is you want to know the meaning of this random song, it wants to tell you that all of the actions the Toad is doing, eg. Smoking marijuana secretly, drinking alcohol, and doing nothing else, just being a menace to society in general, is bad for you, your family and the society. So thou shall not do these actions. (I mean no hate towards the creator of this video)
As a Thai, This song is pretty enjoyable to listen and lyrics is was pretty crazy too. But i have no idea why did everyone thinks this song was about Pol pot
As an actual cambodian, this one is a different version. I've listened to this a lot of times now. Please check out the actual "Satt Thee Touy" version which actually sings about Owls. អូនអេីយមិលនោះ, មិលនោះ Sat Thee Touy.
Fun fact : this song is not from Khmer rouge. This is a folk song that is saying that the animals are dunk and high. But they found this song for memes and the rest is history.
The singer's nickname was "Darkie Ganthreum", a Khmer born Thai who sang Ganthreum music, until his death from cancer in January of 2002 on his 36th birthday. The song is in no way related to the Khmer Rouge. It's a silly song and the Khmer language Darkie spoke is northern Khmer, spoken in Buriram and Surin provinces in present day Thailand.
I mean, the Pol Pot Tribute video was meant to be a shitpost but I didn't think someone would go out their way to fake the lyrics of the song to make it sound like Pol Pot propaganda, unless the lyrics themselves are also shitposts LMAO
When a tankie/nazbol shitpost goes so hard that it makes people in the internet search the truth about an old Cambodian folk song... And they say that the internet is only used for evil things
The two types of communism: "The means of production must be controlled in order for any monopoly or corporation to not raise." "I'm rich and everyone is poor, lmao"
