I'd personally take What Hi Fi reviews with a pinch of salt! The DAC is near perfect as you're going to get. It is the same as the Benchmark DAC in that it has a completely flat frequency response. So it doesn't add or take away anything that's fed through it, no colouration whatsoever.

I agree 6 years later. I'm an audio/ video engineer and this thing is as clean and neutral as you can get. Use the balanced outputs if you can and don't forget to activate USB 2.0 on it if you use that port. I don't use the preamp.

The problem is, too many people commenting because of what they have read or been told, and not using their own ears. I agree with your views on the DAC. :-)

I use a 100w Arcam pre /power amp combo feeding my cherished KEF reference loudspeakers. My system sounds fantastic but for lower volume recordings, I needed to turn the volume knob up to over 80% on the amp to get the loudness I want. I got this DAC a few months ago, and now the amp volume never needs to go beyond to 30% which is great. This product represents great value for money and there is a distinct improvement in sound quality with all kinds of music, imho. The function of the volume knob at power up is weirdly designed, but nonetheless I would still highly recommend the DacMagic Plus.

Which you think is the best option for that range of price (always talking about full balanced DAC)...?

Okay and yeah you have a point in that expensive DACs are many times more placebo than real improvement in sound. But as an example, with good headphones you do notice differences, much more easily than with speakers since room acoustics aren't in the equation. If your setup is only speakers then I'd definitely make sure the room is properly treated before spending lots of money on the source.

if you run the cd line out to rca tape deck input to rca tape deck output to pc line in & live stream record the signal then compare the before & after from the same source cd & when the cd is processed through the analog tape deck with low/high pass filtering + wow & flutter + bias + no noise reduction with no tape in machine so the tape deck is just used to process the digital signal & you can forget about upsampling dsd dac players

Would something like this or a Teac UD-301 work well with speakers like the KRK Rokit 5? Also, would there be any improvement what-so-ever when playing games with immersive soundscapes like Battlefield or Dead Space when using headphones (I know headsets are a mortal enemy of audiophiles) or would this just have benefits for recording and listening to music?

can i connect the xlr output to active speakers and the rca to headphone amps? since i dont see an output selector.. what does the volume control?

I always thought that it was so funny, that with digital music, regardless to what piece of equipment you are listening to you are all dealing with '1's and '0's. But somehow those ones and zeros, sound different between the different chips and hardware. You would think they would all sound the same. I guess it is like gasoline, you put 89 octane in car and it will perform differently depending on what car you are driving.

Just becuase something is outputting at 24 bit 192k doesnt mean it sounds good. There are various DAC's that are very different in sound quality, even though they all output at that rate.

Compared it to a Teac UD-H01 in the store. Teac murders the CA dac in every way, it just sounds like it costs 5 times more, but its actually cheaper. Oh, and the headphone amp on CA is useless. Better buy a used receiver to run your headphones.

Cambridge Audio where bought by Ritcher Sounds and now everything is built down to a price. Also, upsampling adds noise and jitter plus a volume control means there are extra maths or analogue stages affecting the sound quality. The decoupling caps are probably >cheap< as, so they and the PSU caps would be the first upgrades to look at - if you bother buying one!

True, it will take up the same volume of space, however vertically it could be placed next to another component on an a/v shelf instead of on it's own tier.

Using it in a vertical position gives it a smaller footprint on a desk top. This is their thinking, and THIS is why it is supplied with the plastic foot.

Tuck in your shirt and grow more hair. I am using a US$9.70 DAC from china and your DAC may slightly better. The US$ 9.70 is shipping included. I not going to pay so much for slightly better item.

+Altex lan You are out to lunch. Are you thinking it'll make your sub-par components sound mega? No. It's a suberbly priced unit.. maybe the $1000+ DAC's have minimal return for what you are paying. This quality of circuitry would have cost 3x just 5 years ago..

Horrible set design. Very distracting and annoying. Bright glare streaming from the back is clearly the work of someone with zero imagination or training. Tone it down. Add some color. Introducing brilliant white lighting, background or objects onto a sound-stage should be handled by degree'd professionals.
