Well sir, I am obviously woefully late to viewing this video…, just bought one of these units.., and I cannot believe “Camco” has not yet remedied the potential issue with the wheel “cap-retrainer” coming off. As you said, “everything about this tote is great”…, yet “Camco” skimps on those wheel retainers. Your fix is awesome..! Thank you sir.

I purchased a Rhino tote, but I purchased the 15 gallon one and here's why. I never have to take the "slow roll of shame" with my tote. I just pick it up and put in the back of my pickup truck. I can make two trips to the dump station quicker than those who have to do the slow roll. Every 3 days or so, I dump one tank of black and come back an dump one tank of grey. I don't rinse the tank out until the second trip. I always put a cap of treatment in the tank after the flush. I have no odor what so ever. Since I camp at full hook up sites most of the time, but we do like some of the State Parks so the tote does come in handy. This works great for me. You should do what works great for you. That's how life is. I would make one suggestion for your tote. Don't use the hose that came with the tote, make up a short hose (10" should work) You won't have to even touch the hose while you are filling the tote.

I ordered the same one based off of this video and received it today. Right out of the box, the end cap on the axle was barely hanging on, so I took it off by hand and did this modification with the cotter pins to both ends of the axle. Did you fill the tank up to 20-25 gallons before you rolled it to the truck hitch? I’m asking because you seemed to lift the handle and roll the tank really easily. I’ve read that they are heavy (200 + lbs) and hard to roll when full. I just ordered the 36 gallon tank ( 28 gallons is out of stock, or delivery in a month and I need the tank sooner)

Great video and great fix. I realized watching this that the Camco won't work for me. My tank drain outlet is much closer to the ground than yours, and the tank inlet is already higher than the outlet on your rig. Makes the Thetford units look much better with their inlet basically at ground level. Also no hoses to take off and on. A bit more expensive unit, but I think the ergonomics of it might be much more suitable. Appreciate the fine video, really helps people like me come to realizations about possible operational issues.

Thank you for this video; much appreciated! I had ordered the 36 gallon tote tank last week and received it. After I put it together, I searched for videos on how people have used it with their camper, since I have never used one before. After viewing this video and seeing how you made the modifications, I went out to my garage and checked the wheel caps of both wheels. One of the wheel caps came off in my hand and the wheel fell off the tank; it wasn't even pressed on tightly. I drilled the holes on both ends of the axle and used the 5/32 cotter pin as you recommended. Had I not seen this video, I would have had a HUGE problem on my hands on my first use of the tote tank. So, again, thank you for saving me the headache and helping pre-empt this issue. Scott

It was funny watching your clip. Because you bought the proper tank for what you’re using it for. I see so many people using the blue water tank for waste dumping tank. When you see the RU-vid clip. Right off the bat they start well when you get this tank. Ok the problems you’re going to have because they make them so cheap. So your going to need a better hose you’re gonna want to get a clear elbow hose connection. And then they go into explaining all the mistakes that they’ve made with this tank overfilled or hose locked. I bought a 40 gallon Rhino roll behind portable tank. You can’t tell these people different. The replies on my comment we’re in the hundreds.

Excellent video! Thanks. I'm waiting for my 36 gallon Camco tote from Amazon and now am prepared. Amazon has always been so helpful to me also regarding product flops. Are you certain the inner washer isn't necessary? Have the same axle issue on the Husky chests sold at Home Depot. I bet it's just a cheaper and faster way to get these out of the factory and it stinks! Another modification upgrade could be to replace those hard wheels with air style wheelbarrow wheels for a better ride at many bumpy rough road campgrounds. There's a RU-vid video on this. The guy used threaded rod as the new axle. There's gotta be a better way than wrapping it with electrical tape though, but it seems to work. I'd keep it cable locked to the rear ladder or cargo carrier due to possible theft. A guy had his expensive generator stolen off his cargo carrier while he was driving slowly in town. I'm absolutley fed up with criminals and voting for strict law enforcement and severe punishment. Happy and safe RVing! 🙂

@@brady7815 So sorry I misunderstood. No I was referring to the black tank on your RV when your hooked up to sewer at a park, leave it closed until you need to dump it. On the tote tank there is a vent cap and a washout cap for the garden hose. Honestly I've never used it on my tank. A lot of dump stations out there don't have a threaded hose end or any way to hook up a rinse hose to the tank so I just add some water to it with the hose supplied by the dump station and then dump the rinse water. Hope that helps

Great review. Unfortunately Camco still hasn't changed their design (now May 2021). Good thinking there on that modification. Just goes to show RV'er are RV Engineers, who think & freely share knowledge. Glad I didn't get tote without watching your demo on how to do the mod. Amazon has since lower the price of that tote. Our first Rhino was the smallest one. After a couple years the tires broke beyond repair. Hanging mechanism fell off also. We decided to get the largest tote and tires fell off right out of the box. My husband pounded the end caps back on and all seemed fine. 2nd time using it, today as a matter of fact, both tires fell off within seconds of towing it. Didn’t realize it till we got to the dumping station. Thankfully that wasn’t that far but it did get pretty banged up. I’m getting those pins and making sure this doesn’t happen again.

Ours started to leak at the filler / dump hole after two years or four weeks of camping. I am attempting to plastic weld the leak with hdpe material. Those nice cap lanyards break off easily. It is useful but for the cost it needs better or stronger materials. The instructions show 5 mph max for towing.

Have use a 36 gal for 3 months and one wheel broke. Trying to find a replacement wheel that will carry the weight is impossible need to upgrade to a 14 inch wheel and wider. The 12 inch wheels are only rated for 70 pounds a 36 gallon ways 250 or more. Will have to modify the axle because it’s only half inch and to get a bigger wheel you need to go to fiveeights other than that I love the tote.

Nice video and thanks for sharing and great idea. I'm also in disbelief with the hats. One point that I want to make is the axle can walk left or right in the plastic housing under the tote so I'm going to leave the washer on the inside. It would block the tire from rubbing the tote if it did walk and it's really close without that washer there. I will pick up some thinner washers for the outside.

Great video! I was wondering how this mod is holding up! I was also wondering if the axel rod could be replaced with one that has threads and put a washer and a couple of nuts to lock it in place along with a cotter pin!
@JonesN2Travel
@JonesN2Travel 5 лет назад
That is a great idea and yes it could be done with a piece of all thread the same size as the axle. The axle rod simply slides through a confined space on the bottom of the tote so you could easily replace it. I used the existing axle and cotter pins simply because that is what I had on-hand to work with but I like your idea too. :)

I like the theory behind the tote but not sure about the execution. We boon-dock a fair amount. We have stayed at the same place in Quartzite as well. I can see towing the tote to that dump station and being successful there. My concern is what about a lot of other places you may have to go10- 20+ miles to dump? and down rocky roads or freeways ? Is placing it in the back of your pickup and using a macerator / pump the answer? I assume once you have 20+ gal's of liquid its going to weigh over 200#'s so picking it up and lifting it into the truck bed is out (?). Any other ideas ?

Nice job, bud! Impressed with your workaround (as I've seen others do the same). One thing I noticed, at the 10 min. mark, you put the wheel on wrong before securing the cotterpin (probably doesn't matter). Question though - is the tow handle upside down?
