My biggest fear this that R&B will never have BANDS like this again. By BANDS I mean entertaining musicians; play instruments, sing, and dance. Cameo at this stage was crazy tight as a musicians AND fun to watch. P-funk, Slave, WAR, the Ohio Players, Bar-Kays, Commodores, Prince, Fishbone, and on....oh, we've lost so much in 30 years.
These days are like the Dodo bird and the dinosaurs. Extinct. You've got some trying to recreate the funk, but they'll never get it back to what it was.
Smh The number of bands, especially this one, to come out of a fun and pivotal era in Black music in during the 1970s and 1980s is still mind blowing. Artists now just don't play or even give shows as like seen anymore. Crying shame as to what and how cheesy and dark the music industry's become.
Jam Session this is how they played in the 70's and up until 81 when R&B sound begin to change Prince and The Time as well as, as a ton of Groups put out some real great music
I saw Cameo, Ohio Player, The Bar-Kays & Con Funk Shun back in the 90s here in ATL. OMG.....one of the best Funk Fest EVER!! And I've gotten a chance to meet several of them years later. ❤🤘🏼🤩
All great....but although one of my favorites, Ohio players' live performances were disappointing...I love their music but back in my day...70's..80's..they got embarrassed following a group like Cameo.
Listen 2 Larry Blackmon on the Double Kick.He makes Cameo swing like Hammerin' Hank and he is locked with the Horns!!DOUBLE KICKS!Blackmon is The ILLEST!!!✨🎼🙏🏼🎼✨🇨🇦🤓
Funk at it's best this is about when I first heard them missed their performance at the superfest when I was in New York at this time and Larry putting it down on traps and singing hey you can listen to him in real early years on drums and did a pretty good job on a group in early seventies called Black Ivory a song called you and I
I agree 💯 and don't forget about the late Mr Wayne Cooper this was right after his departure go back and check him out if you haven't already his falsetto was OFF THE CHAIN
@@mauriceholden9238 Yeah,...other bands were like.. hold up! Put us on before Cameo, we ain't tryin' to go on after them! Cameo would turn it out!! Lol.
Texas Southern University " Ocean of Soul Marching band that's who. We still playing talking out the side of your neck and skin I'm in plus others. It was a thrill, honor and privilege to perform Cameo.
+Noel Openda No he had left the group during this time. he was working on a solo project to be produced by Charlie Singleton. unfortunately he past before it was released.
Noel Openda Wayne was kicked out of the group because Larry did not want to pay him. Wayne felt that what he brought to the group he should have been paid more. Wayne should have been paid a lot more because Wayne had his legion of fans who adored him. People said that Larry Blackmon was jealous of his popularity. This performance was at the end of the 1980 Cameosis tour. Wayne performed on the majority of this tour and was kicked out at the end. I believe he missed the last three concerts. Stephen Moore was his replacement. Stephen couldn't light a candle compared to Wayne. When Wayne was with Cameo their performances were at the group's peak! Wayne was with Cameo from 1977-1980. Wayne did four albums with cameo.
funkordie100 That is not the case. Larry was supposed to produce Wayne's album. Reliable sources said that Larry spent the money and Wayne's album never got finished. Charlie Singleton was helping with the album but Larry Blackmon was in charge. This was around 1981 three years before Wayne passed. Just so you know only Larry Blackmon was the only one signed by the record label. The rest of the members of Cameo had no contract, they were basically musicians hired by Larry Blackmon. Wayne Cooper, Nathan Leftenant, Gregory Johnson, Etc had no contract with the record label so they were musicians without a contract. So that meant they could be let go at any moment.
Cameo were true performers in thier time! But, don forget Earth, Wind and Fire in that day. I also put them in that category! You were'nt disappointed!
This is the REAL Cameo, the thirteen member group that jammed. Listen to the horns; TC on the keys; Aaron on the bass; and Larry stroking!! #C -Funk. Cameo lost their soul when they stripped down to 3 members and Larry strapped on a red cup.
In '81 or so when synths took over, all those big bands let their people go. EW&F too. Synths are a lot cheaper to take on the road than a 13 piece band. That's when the organic, genuine quality of music took a big step downhill.
