There's nothing more I like in photography than a photo challenge, so this week I have come up with the camera bag challenge. The camera bag challenge is simple. Find a spot to put your camera bag down and photograph all you can shoot within sight it. The only rules are that you have to get more than one image, two or three are ideal. You can then post them to Instagram under the hashtag #camerabagchallenge to share your results. This video is specifically aimed at nature photographers like myself, those who love an intimate scene or two, although if other genres of photography appeal to you, then have a go with this too.

Hi Simon I did that challenge several years ago in an overgrown field about the size of a football field, lost track of where I had set my bag down, spent several hours combing up and down the area to no avail. My bag contained my newly purchased Nikon 24-70 f 2.8 and various accessories. Came back several times to look exhaustively, no luck, gave it up for lost could not believe I could not find it in a circumscribed area though the grass was quite tall in areas. A year later after a Canadian winter someone stumbled upon it and saw one of my posters I’d put up and returned it to me. The bag was a mess mice had eaten away at it but the lens was in great shape no issues at all. So I’m gonna pass on taking your challenge up 😂😂😂

I’ve had a bit of a bad back lately so buying an Evoc Unisex Adult Capture 7 litre photo hip pack, from Amazon, for small walks. It’s green, so if I put it down I certainly wouldn’t find it again! Wish they’d make these things in bright yellow/orange, though I know some packs do come in those colours, but they are backpacks! Interesting ideas, Simon and great images🇦🇺

Thanks Simon for all the effort and work you put into making these videos. This is a good challenge and one every landscape and nature photographer would benefit from. You too often see technically good photographers struggle because they are fixated on the larger grand scene and not seeing the smaller more intimate ones, and yet it is these smaller details that are more likely to produce a compelling photograph. Once again you have given us three images that most of us would be proud of had we taken them.

Simon! I have been watching your videos for years and I just wanted to say that you are one of my favorite photographers! In every single video, I am absolutely gobsmacked at your ability to find stunning images in small, intimate places...it blows my mind. Thank you for doing what you do and for inspiring us to slow down and take notice of the beauty around us. I think of your videos every time I am out walking in the forest. I also wanted to thank you for this great idea! I started scoping out a few spots to attempt your camera bag challenge this weekend, and I will admit - it was tougher than it looks. Simon, I just returned from the perfect location for the challenge and the video will be out tomorrow, Now your challenge is going to have me heading back on the weekend to get some challenge shots and I will make a video to ensure no cheating. Fantastic images as always Simon, loved the use of the white cloth great tip. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for your videos. I love the background sounds of birds and water, everything really. Just started the fasting month so I’m not as active going out taking pictures, so it’s nice to see your videos. I started something similar to your challenge- pictures within a 30 minute walk from my house

The ferns were really nice! I think when I get the chance to try this, I'm bringing a white flag or two and tie them to a tree. Where I live, if I put the bag down and walk away, I won't need to go back and look for it- it will disappear before you could say 'f stop'. Great video as usual! Cheers!

There are two correct exposures. The first is what you should aim for in the field, it's just shy of over exposing the highlights. The histogram is useful, so too are blinkies. This gets the best possible image quality. I think that F5.6 would have got sufficient depth of focus, the longer your exposure duration the more likely it is that something will move or the light change. I have been playing with 1s exposures recently, I want blur. The second correct exposure is artistically correct. If you want "dark and moody," take your technically perfect exposure and change it. You will have the minimum noise, and if you change your mind, or want another interpretation then you didn't exclude that in the field. If you shot "blown out," you can't really do "good exposure" later. In your position, I would have shot everything more than once, because my first shot's probably not the best, and a lot more besides because I learn from experiencing what works and what doesn't.

Certainly with my camera/lens combo, f5.6 would never have resulted in a sharp image. Medium format lenses are not in the same league as FF at these wide apertures.

That's a great idea Simon; the old 'photograph in a square metre from where you're standing' always felt too restrictive (to me), but I like this. I thought you did the leaf shot particularly well, and the larch image turned out far better than I anticipated when you first showed us the scene. Nice work, and thanks for the video.

Great video, thanks. F19 though? No diffraction issues? I thought lenses are usually sharpest somewhere around 2 to 3 stops from wide open.

The lens I use here is a medium format and it’s exceptionally sharp at this.

Look a lowe pro field and street system. Its awesome. Chest vest with pockets for battering filters and what not. Belt has many loops. I have two cotton carrier holsters for two cameras. 7dmk2 24-70 on one holster 5dmk4 70 300 on other holster. Nothibg on shoulders or back.

Good morning Simon... we just had another late winter snow blast! Would love to do the challenge... but I do not use Instagram... the challenge becomes even more challenging if you get a friend to locate your camera bag for you... 😅 Yes at least 2.. maybe 3 or 4 images make you look closer and spend some time in the space 🙂

Hello Simon Timless images :-). About my camera bag. I am very minimalistic in use of equipment and not often use a camera bag. When I use one than it is not so big. Grt Ernesto

Nice video, and good challenge. 🙂 If it helps, there are trolleys to put your bag on, I bought one to relieve my back when I do a lot of walking. Different brands like Buteo or Stealth gear. I wish you a speedy recovery

I'm four minutes in, lunch calls. Laowa has a 10mm lens for full frame. I think with its width, it would be quite the challenge. It covers 130 degrees, how many distinctly different photos could you make in a small area with such a lens?

The camera bag challenge is very freeing. You put your bag down and forget it. Then you just wander around camera in hand and find an image. Then if necessary, go back and fetch tripod etc. It's very freeing. It might get you an image you might otherwise have missed because you're more relaxed without lugging the camera bag around. Of course if you're worried about someone stealing your gear you cant do it. Need to be somewhere lonely. Cant join your challenge though 'cos I'm not on public media.

You can always have someone with you to look after your bag, but I get the social media thing. Probably a wise choice.
