What a Creative Year in Photography

With 2024 knocking on the door already, I want to take the opportunity reflect back on what a creative year of photography it has been for me. 2023 was good to me it seems, as I was surely blessed with a number of really lovely images. Join me in this film and let's review my top ten favourite shots and hear why I chose them for this film. Also in this film I will share some new information about the direction of the channel going forward, so stay tuned until the end.

Dear Simon, i understand your urge to go outside, away from where you took very beautiful pictures for all of us, the close-ups are fantastic. There are other photographers doing their thing in the places you mentioned. But a photographer who understands the artistic aspects of photography is rare. Please do your thing. Hi Simon. It was wonderful to see your favorites selection and remember the first time I saw them in your videos. Great work this year. I hope you are not changing the format simply to appeal to a larger audience. There is already so much landscape content around that it feels saturated. What has drawn me especially to your channel is your focus on details and finding balance and structure among the chaos of the woodland settings. It has been very refreshing to watch. If you are changing things a little because of your genuine personal desire, then great for you, certainly do it. Have a wonderful 2024.

Excellent Simon. Like you I have a full time job but often fail to get out with a camera. There always seems to be something that gets in my way! So I can really appreciate your efforts, I'd be happy with one shot of the year . Thank you for sharing. Blessings for the New Year.

Totally agree with your favourite choice of image Simon. The wet sheen on the trunk of the near tree really grabs the eye and stands out against the misty rain in the background. I also like as you mentioned the side lit tree trunks that help guide the eye through the image.

Hi Simon. It is so helpful to hear what attracted you to your photos and how you describe your favorites. Sometimes, it's hard to describe why an image is your best. I really liked the tress at 32:54. They were all beautiful.

Hi Simon. What a fantastic video - absolutely love the images, a real revelation. The image from the bus shelter was fantastic and sums up what art is about. Finding the sublime in the most unlikely places, if you have an open mind. The 'lost soulsr' image really chimed with me. Love the ambiguity. Since the lockdown I've tried to limit the scope of my travels for inspiration. Unfortunately that has included not seeing Lancashire where I come from. So thank you for giving me glimpses of the place I love and miss - filtered through your artistic vision. Have a brilliant 2024. Best wishes from Western Australia.

Lovely photos! The learning is that intimate nature photography can be very rewarding and can keep you going through bad weather and get you great photos even in our local area. Getting great landscape shots is more difficult as apart from great subject many things like conditions need to come together. But when it does like the last photo it is very rewarding.

Thanks So much Simon! Each image that you showed us was fantastic and unique. As far as your slight change in direction and focus for next year...do it for yourself...don't do it for us...follow your passion and the rest will follow (including your subscribers). You are truly unique in how you find beauty in the smallest of scenes that most people completely overlook, and I think that is one of the main reasons I ALWAYS watch your videos and am not so consistent with other landscape/nature photographers. I do look forward to whatever videos you choose to offer us in the New year! You always inspire me...

Thank you so much Simon for bringing us viewers such great content in 2023. How you don't have a much larger following baffles me.The biggest surprise to me in this video is you were able to limit yourself to a top 10. You could easily have done a top 20 or 30. My personal favourite in your top 10 is the monochrome water shot and the reason for this is simply I don't believe I have ever seen an image like this. It is quite wonderful. As much as some of us will want to photograph the world as we see it, photography can only ever be an impression of what we see and this one image proves the point more than most. I am sure when you took the photograph you didn't see the "lost souls" and yet the camera has captured a moment resulting in something quite unexpected. I wish you a wonderful 2024.

The old pine in front of the young ones, for me the old is the maestro (singer, I felt it was a woman 😊) and the young behind is just taken away how good she is. 😀 It's a really great picture. 😀

Awesome Top 10, Simon! The two leaves on a diaganol at 26:32 do like like they are in motion and I'd say the silvery background is the third element that stands out the leaves. The fact that you shot up in a bus hangar is just why you should always have a camera with you, regardless... .Happy New Year!

Fabulous selection of images Simon and I'm sure it must have been difficult to just choose 10. I've loved tuning in to see your next adventure where ever it has been. My favourite is the "lost souls" image,I can see so many faces like it's from the book "paradise lost " quite surreal. I will admit, that I still prefer to go out, if conditions are "promising", but since I've discovered your channel, about three years ago, I went out in "not optimal" conditions probably more than the whole 20 years before since I deliberately take pictures. 25 weeks of fantastic images and helpful advice. I remember you taking all those stunning images, rain seems to be a recurring theme. You may have only given it a 3 but the Scotch Pine is my favourite, but I’m biased I love trees. You have given me inspiration and made me want to continue on my photography journey when others have knocked my confidence, so thank you so much. You’ll be pleased to know Willow has just woken up my dog Izzy who was fast asleep won’t be long before she’s snoring again. Wishing you and your family a very happy New Year, and you never know I might bump into you if you visit the Peak District next year.

Hi Simon, I really gain a lot from your videos on how you find detailed compositions as well as the big vistas. Both are fantastic but I'm not aware of anybody else who has your eye for detail and finds such beautiful images on the floors of woods etc. I follow Thomas Heaton, and others, for the big vista approach but nobody else seems to have your eye for the small details which I try to add to my approach to compositions, although I find it quite challenging.

Thanks for all your videos in 2023 Simon, and good luck in finding more gems in 2024. If you ever fancy travelling a bit further, you would be very welcome here in Bath. I am embarking on a project on the Mendip Hills in 2024. One day every month, covering three themes (water, woods and high places) across the four seasons. If I don't end up with a decent set of images from that, I will call it a day! Your videos have inspired me to look closer at the landscape, but I still love a pano vista, so your 2024 plan sounds most interesting. Good health and happiness to you and yours.

Stonking selection of images as expected Si, your eye for an image be it looking up, looking down or straight ahead is extraordinary. You present so well and as you were talking us through your top picks the videos were coming back to me. I was smiling as the "faces in the stream" came up - I was expecting to see it as with your final image - which was my fave from your shoots also. Going forward I was hoping you would expand that 2 hours as I wished you had chance to look around here when you did the Llangattock run - I think we have things to offer you.
