Camera settings for street photography & tips!
Ok so i'm finally getting round to this video.. its my number one requested video so i hope you like it and find it useful.
Although i shoot my street photography with either a Fujifilm XT3, X100F or XPro2, these camera settings are universal and can be implemented to any camera.
Mirrorless cameras are amazing and offer a ton of cool features but DSLR's are still perfect for street photography so don't feel you need to upgrade..
Ive been shooting street photography and filming my adventures for a while now. Over that time my style of shooting and the way i set my cameras up have changed. Now i feel i'm happy with my cameras and the way i shoot so i feel confident sharing these camera settings with you.
Please bare in mind, these are just my preferences, there are many amazing street photographers shooting with completely different camera settings
I hope you found this video useful :-)

Front button I use to focus-on, find it more comfortable for my hands. Especially when I am flipping the screen up and shooting from my waist etc. Front button focusing ftw!

Great video, Gareth. I’ve set the front button to autoexposure lock, and it works really well especially if you have one or more setting on auto in the exposure triangle. 1. Back button focus the subject. 2. Move the camera around the subject to find the desired exposure and hold with your middle finger. 3. Recompose and shoot.

Interesting video. I’d love to get into street photography but feel conspicuous with my dslr, it’s pretty large and obvious! I had an M50 and traded it for a 90d, regretted trading it ever since and so contemplating a smaller, less obvious mirrorless but ££😳 I’m so used to canons menus being straightforward I’m not sure if I’d get confused with someone else’s 😂 really enjoying all your videos and something new to learn, thanks for the content.

I shoot the XT1 and X100T mainly. Great info for those learning to get to grips and customising their cameras. I went Fujifilm because it was the best system for both landscape and street, for me anyway. It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up a Canon. I also shoot Sony A6300’s but there’s just something about those Fujifilm files and the ergonomics of these great little cameras.

Just to add a little more background... I'm a recent convert to back button focusing. I love the idea of decoupling the focus function from the shutter. However, I found that I regularly had to pull the camera away from my eye to find the focus button with my thumb. Therefore, I never really developed muscle memory. The front button is so close to my middle finger that I don't have to search for it. Now I'll have to find a function to assign to the AF-L button. ;-)

Have a try at setting the exp comp dial to C. Then assign the exp comp to the front command wheel. It will give to +/- 5 stops now instead of 3. It is easy to adjust on the fly, as you already have fingers around the shutter button. It maybe more intuitive than adjusting ISO.

i do mate.. when i started my street journey thats how i was shooting.. hence the comp dial being on c in the vid.. i dont like the exposure changing as i move the camera around as it would in auto iso.. prefer it fixed :-)

I have an X100T, X-T20 and X-T2. What is nice about the X100T, is it has a sound "kill switch." The 'Silent Mode' option. I'm surprised Fuji did not add this simple yet useful option in the other models. Oh welly well, I do as you do, and manually shut off all the sounds.

One thing I find incredibly frustrating about the Fuji Auto ISO setting is that the camera overrides the minimum shutter speed, so often when there's low light that it becomes pointless. I wish there was a way of hard locking an actual minimum.
@jxcreativedesign

MS you can set the Shutter Dial to your preferred minimum - that locks the shutter speed to the amount, while Auto ISO works around that number

I have actually turned the small histogram OFF and assigned the rgb histogram to a function button (XT-2). I'm constantly on the move in street photography, so back button focus is a no go (and I dislike it anyway). I love using Acros+R, Astia and a Kodachrome recipe I tweaked. Wow, that was a lot of information. I'd be even more impressed if you did that in one take. I think I only noticed one cut. Since shooting film there's no surprise you've started simplifying your shooting. Talking of simply shooting during the Vietnam War the American jets (Sabres), although technically superior were being shot down at a very uneven ratio by the simpler, technically inferior, Russian provided (Migs), Vietnamese ones. Eventually the American pilots started turning off all the confusing guidance and targeting systems and simply got visual contact, caught up with the enemy in the faster Sabre jets, fired a quick burst with heavy cannon at point blank range before the Vietnamese could evade in the more maneuverable Migs... and left quickly. Suddenly the ratio's turned around. The moral for shooting street photography is: sneak in, hit them with your best shot and get out quick.

They say you should always take something away with you.... and for me... I'm taking away from this the back button focus... 👍 I've never seen the point in it before... but today the penny dropped. Looking forward to setting that up tomorrow. 🙂👊👊 All the very best bud. ..... came back to add.. did you know on xt3 you dont have to continually shoot raw and jpeg. You can convert any raw to a jpeg in camera and choose all the various attributes for the conversion..... You probably knew that anyway... lol. I'm done..... cya next time. Cheers.

Just the video I needed , I’ve been using a Leica Q for my street photography, but just lately I’ve felt I’ve been missing some shots due the fixed 28mm focal length, so I decided to get the Fuji XT3 ( after trying a friends ) , I’m not selling my Q as I love the camera too much , I will only be using the XT3 for street and architecture shots, which bought it as a kit on Black Friday with the 18-55mm which to my surprise is a very capable lens, ( certainly better than other kit lenses I’ve had over the years) . I was just wondering what are your go to lenses for street photography with the XT3 ? . Thanks Gareth keep up the good work . PS: I will be giving the XT3 it’s first street workout next week in Liverpool when we are there for our 40th wedding anniversary.

Gareth Danks Yes it does Gareth , what I wanted really was the ability to change lenses as for me personally the style of street I personally like does not require me to be in people’s faces too often . I like the more minimal street image . Keep up the good work and I’ll look out for your meet-ups on Instagram.

Great video. Can you do a video sometime on back button focus, with some in the street examples? I find it rather confusing. Also, if I have my camera set up for that, does it mess up my focus settings for when I do my landscape photography?

I have the XT-2 and I find the settings incredibly complicated and fiddly to change. There terminology is also arcane. However for the front button I find DOF preview is best, but then I am a landscaper.

Great detailed run through! I do a similar thing with my jpegs, but mainly to ensure I don't go overboard with my raw edits (I export my raw edits into the same folder and compare side by side). I find it strange that you'd prefer shooting manual ISO over auto ISO with a minimum shutter speed. How often are you shooting polar bears in the street? :D Doesn't the raw file give you enough latitude to fine-tune exposure? My X-T20 doesn't have the ISO dial anyway, so maybe that's why I'm such a fan of auto ISO!
@Nico-ux7wr
@Nico-ux7wr 3 года назад
Might be a year late, but if you still use the X-T20 you can edit the front or back dial to change your ISO
@MrJed_s
@MrJed_s 3 года назад
@@Nico-ux7wr I moved from Fuji to m43 about 6 months ago, but thanks for the note all the same! Even if I had an ISO dial I probably wouldn't use it, I'm not a film photographer so the idea using gain/ISO as an input parameter seems very illogical to me.
@TimberGeek
@TimberGeek 4 года назад
I do wish I had a dedicated ISO dial.
@GarethDanks
@GarethDanks 4 года назад
most cameras have a rear dial, can you set it to that?
@TimberGeek
@TimberGeek 4 года назад
@@GarethDanks It does work that way in Aperture priority but in manual it's the shutter speed and I have to hold down an ISO button most of the way down on the back left to 'shift' the function. Invariably when I try it without looking I get the button above it switching my camera from RAW to some flavor of JPG as I spin the dial. But since I've pretty much killed my old manual 70-150 I should see if I can reassign the F1 (top front right button) from manual lens selection to ISO or maybe I can shuffle spot metering there and put ISO in the DoF button.

Amazes me why people think they can do a better job stuffing around with raw images compared to what Fujifilm simulations produce. A company with decades of experience, legacy films and professionals who have created multiple iterations of these cameras ... but no, an amateur photographer can do it better.
