Using Water Housings without manual controls such as the Aquatech Base model means you have to properly setup your camera before swimming out to get your surf action shots. This video will show you how I setup a camera for a daytime shoot to get great consistent results each time. This pre setup of camera setting can also be an advantage for the anyone wanting to focus more on the action than fiddling around with camera dials while trying to dodge set waves. Would love to know your thoughts and any questions you may have.

Thanks Tom - I've got only got a back plate for the 5dmk4 but I far prefer to use my 7dmk2 so it was really good to watch this. With the 70-200 lens would you set the focus as per your ultra wide angle ? Love your video's and thanks for sharing !!

@dreamlifephotography 4 года назад
Hey Fenna, thanks for your message. The pre set of focus only works for super wide lenses like fisheyes or lenses under 20mm. If definitely will NOT work for your 70-200mm lens. You will need to use your 5Dmk4 camera when using your longer lenses. Or get the back plate for the 7Dmk2

Love the videos Tom! Just got my water housing. Made the awesome mistake of focussing then forgetting to change out of auto focus! Random question... I am not a surfer myself although I do a lot of land surf photography. If I am trying to get a shot down a barrel, how do I position myself to not be just taken away with the wave myself? Thanks.

I have a Sony a6000, the camera isn't the best. Most of the times my pictures are unfocused, Im going to try preset it before going out there. My main problem is when the waves are to big Im scare to go where the surfers are because I only have my fins and I don't know where should I be positioned in the ocean. But well maybe more practice. Thanks for this tips!
@dreamlifephotography

Yeah the pre-set of the focus only works with ultra wide lenses. What lens are you using on the a6000? I do have tips for positioning in my advanced online course which opens again in a few weeks time. If you like you can take my free mini course at : dream-life-through-photography.teachable.com/p/transform-your-water-photography

Very nice Videos, trank you! What are the white little stripes in the domeport? Do you have problems with fog of moisture inside the housing ? Best regards from germany.
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography 2 года назад
Thanks Yves, appreciate your kind words! The white squares are double sided tape that came with the port where you can apply black fabric to reduce reflection from the front of the dome to your image... but I don't really use it, as I normally don't have a problem with reflection

@@dreamlifephotography Hi Tom, thanks for your answer! Do you sometimes have the problem that moisture collects inside the lens port or dome port? I have read from other cases that this happens because of the temperature difference. Some people then put silicate gel bags in the case. I have the Elite body for my Nikon D500 and will be starting surf and wave photography in Europe next month. Kind regards and keep it up.

@@splash.photography.germany Yes this can happen.. The only time Ive had it is when I have been on boat trips on the equator where the housing is kept in the cool air conditioned cabin and loaded there and then brought out into the warm tropical air. The best way around this is to have the housing un loaded and open to the natural air temp (whether that is cold or hot) for at least 15 minutes before loading and then you should have no problems. But yes I have heard moisture bags can help. But the best results will happen when you get the housing used of the air temps before loading it up. Also another thing to watch is that the housing is super dry, sometimes small drops of water can sneak into housing when unloaded from the previous session and just one drop probably won't harm your camera but it can create condensation. Hope this helps? so exciting that you are starting your journey with water photography in Europe this summer, it is seriously the most fun and rewarding pursuit. I wish you all the best and please hit me up with any questions. Yew!!!

@@dreamlifephotography Hi Tom, thank you for your help. I'll follow your advice and I'm curious how the pictures will turn out. Of course you have to practice. Thank you for helping me. Unfortunately, Aquatech does not offer any advice on the subject of moisture. I will continue to accompany your channel and am looking forward to your further results. Best regards, Yves

Do you recommend a flat port or dome port
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography 3 года назад
Sorry for the late reply Christian, I only just came across this question today. I recommend Dome ports for lenses 20mm or wider (so your 8mm to 20mm) are best in a dome port. And then when using longer lens like 35mm, 50mm, 100mm or 70-200mm lenses are definitely better inside a flat port. Cheers

mate I found a bit confusing when you mention you would not be able to focus with the housing? and then afterwards you mention you can actually do that with the Base housing... can you elaborate? Thanks
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography Год назад
HI Victor thanks for your message.. so I was using the 7D camera in a 5D housing so the focus buttons don't line up so I preset manual focus (something that you can do effectively when shooting with a super wide lens) When using the base housings with the camera it was designed for then auto focusing is 100% possible and works fine... hope this clear it up for you? if not let me know

Great video mate! What mode do u shoot in, action?
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography 3 года назад
Hey Nick, Thanks so much for your message and kind words. I generally shoot in Manual or TV mode for action, depending on the light. If I am shooting towards the same area (like at a reef break or point break) then I set in manual, but in an unpredictable beach breaks with randoms lefts and rights in the surf I will shoot Shutter preferred mode (TV mode) Freezing surf action normally set shutter speed 1/800th or higher

@@dreamlifephotography I like to have all the actions at my disposal, there at the moment, I use everything in the manual, I have the control buttons on the back of the box to suit me, the only thing I set up before is the lens focus, like the aperture ring that I leave at 5.6 or 8 and the other ring I leave close to infinity, so I know I’ll have everything in focus, I use this technique when I’m using the 7 artisans 7.5mm 2.8 fisheye, because it’s a completely manual lens.

THanks for your patience with the late reply on this one, just finding some older messages today. So I wasn't using the base housing in this video, but if I was I WOULD be able focus. But I was using a totally different housing for the camera type, so I could only use the pistol grip (cable release trigger) which means I had to preset the focus... so that is where it might have got confusing... cheers for the message
