One of the best comedies of the 80s. John Hughes did so many fantastic films back then Ferris Buelller's Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, The Home Alone films and many more. The plot here lends itself to great comedy scenarios with Steve Martin as the straight guy, and John Candy as the clown. Funniest part is when the car catches fire. I saw this at the cinema on release, and the audience were nearly choking with laughter. A very poignant ending when we realise Del's wife has died and he is in fact homeless. A shame too that John Candy died so young at only 44 and indeed John Hughes himself died very young only 59. Still he left a great legacy of films, of which this was one of his best.

"Marie's been dead for eight years," Even though I know it's coming, that line gets me every time. Why do I have the feeling that Del's still going to be living there at Christmastime. Some of my favorite Steve Martin movies are The Jerk (1979), L.A. Story (1991), and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988). Worth checking out if you haven't seen them yet.

If you're into classic old black & white movies, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is an awesome comedy. Scenes with famous actors are intermixed with Steve Martin (who plays a private detective) to make it look like he's interacting with them. very good stuff.

The original cut was 3 hours. That's after cutting alternate takes and trimming it down as much as John Hughes was willing to cut. They brought in another editor to take out half the movie and still make it make sense. To give you an idea of how much they cut, there was almost a whole HOUR more to the film after the scene of the cop pulling Del and Neal over. In the 3-hour cut, the cop reveals that they overshot Chicago and were outside of Waukegan, leaving them 40 minutes away from the city and without a car.
@jasontaverner391
@jasontaverner391 Месяц назад
The wife had a much bigger role in the original footage, as the subplot was her suspicion that Neal was having an affair. Hence, the confusing "Hello, Mr. Griffith/Hello Mrs. Page" ending makes allot more sense when its her sense of relief.

I watch this movie every Thanksgiving. Just subscribed to your channel, too. Happy Thanksgiving! Fun fact: Steve Martin recently published a book about his film career. He said the Director's Cut of Planes, Trains and Automobiles is nearly 4 hours long! That's because he and John Candy did TONS of improv! Whether that will see the light of day, we'll never know. Also, John Hughes said in an interview that he got the idea for the story after he took a business trip to New York and it took him three days to get home to Chicago. He added the Thanksgiving holiday to the movie's story line since it's the busiest travel day of the year.

Great reaction Cami like always, I love this movie i haven't seen it in a long time, John Hughes at the peak of his powers, with two masterful comedians at theirs Martin and Candy. There are some fun-facts about it, this movie is inspired by John Hughes’s own hellish trip from New York City to Chicago. Before he became a filmmaker, Hughes worked as a copywriter for the Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago. One day he had an 11 a.m. presentation scheduled in New York City on a Wednesday, and planned to return home on a 5 p.m. flight that same evening. Winter winds forced all flights to Chicago to be canceled that night, so he stayed in a hotel. A snowstorm in Chicago the next day continued the delays. The plane he eventually boarded ended up being diverted to Denver. Then Phoenix. Hughes didn’t make it back until Monday. John Candy arrived with lots of exercise equipment in tow. On the first day of shooting, the crew brought in treadmills, weights, and other exercise equipment for Candy to use in his hotel suite. Martin said Candy “never went near any of it once.” McClurg who is probably best known as Grace, Principal Rooney’s secretary in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, played the St. Louis car rental employee upon whom Neal dropped 18 F-bombs. For the first few takes, McClurg simply raised her finger and had a standard phone conversation with a customer. Then Hughes told her to improvise talking on the phone about Thanksgiving. In the scene that goes back and forth between Neal trying to sleep next to Del clearing his sinuses and Neal’s watching TV alone in their bed, she is somehow watching She’s Having a Baby, which wouldn’t be released in theaters until February of the following year. Kevin Bacon stars in that movie, and made a cameo in Planes, Trains and Automobiles as the guy who out-hustles Neal in getting a cab. Some people believe Bacon who was officially listed in the credits as “Taxi Racer” was playing his She’s Having a Baby character, Jake, in that scene. Another cameo was the future Star Trek: Voyager star Jeri Ryan that made her acting debut in this movie. She was one of the passengers on the bus ride and couldn’t help but laugh at Martin and Candy’s antics. In the original ending, Del followed Neal all the way home. In the train scene, where Neal thinks about Del and laughs, Martin didn’t know the camera was rolling. To get the new ending he wanted, Hughes and editor Paul Hirsch went back to look for footage they previously

Well I was sitting behind the guy driving and The front seat passanger was sleeping. I tried to get his arms off but it wasnt happpening. The Front seat Passanger woke up, grabbed the wheel and we made it for a stop without incident. This must have happened to others, since it made it into the movies as a scene.

A wonderful reaction. It's always fun to watch when someone sees this movie for the first time. For me, this movie is a must watch around Thanksgiving. This and the "WKRP in Cincinnati" episode with the immortal line "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly". There are, of course, a ton of Christmas movies that are must watches, primarily "It's A Wonderful Life", "Miracle on 34th Street" and "A Christmas Carol".

The original ending had Del explain everything to Neal, and it's a devastating monologue. Del explains that Marie died eight years ago and that they never had a family, even though they tried. Every year, the holidays get harder and harder, so he tries to go to a church service just to feel a sense of community when he starts feeling lost. He just wants to feel like he belongs somewhere with people without having to explain himself or why he's there. After Marie's death, Del made a vow to never be a burden to anyone, but he broke that vow with Neal, and then Del starts apologizing for doing this to Neal and ruining his Thanksgiving. There's debate as to whether the scene would be better or worse having the whole explanation, but Steve Martin has said it was the one scene that he was angry that they cut.

Hi Cami, nice to see you back again after your Predator films!😊 There are two cameos from Ferris Bueller's in this film. The announcer at the airport as the teacher taking attendance "Bueller, Bueller, Bueller???". The woman Steve Martin is rude to at the car rental was the principal's secretary. Steve Martin and John Candy are now iconic. However, they were not the first choices for the roles. John Hughes' original choices were Tom Hanks as Neal and John Travolta as Del. Unfortunately, Tom Hanks was busy filming Big and, at the time, John Travolta was considered box office poison. After that, Rick Moranis was eyed for Neal and John Goodman was considered for Del.

Rip to the great one of a kind, john candy. John Hughes, could write movie scripts so fast! Anything john was in was great. Blues Brothers stripes Brewster's millions home alone uncle buck Splash, and on and on. Mostly he had small parts but watch any movie he starred or costarred in. Next should be uncle buck, then stripes. Pro tips...steve martins partner in this is ferris buellers dad! Kevin bacon was in another movie based on this character, He said She said! The plane announcer guy is ferris buellers teacher! The car rental lady is ferris buellers principals assistant! She was a personal friend of Hughes and suggested a clerk do a phone call scene in front of steve. So Hughes gave her the part and it was completely unscripted...she addlibbed the whole thing! The cartoon family guy, does the greatest parody of their motel room arguement scene! The song in the car is by ray Charles, the song he or the kid is jamming to in uncle buck, is also ray Charles! The End freeze frame the exact same as uncle Buck! This was Neil's Groundhog day. He had to learn something, before he could get home. The handshake scene with spit tobacco, was addlibbed, steve martins reaction is real! The song in the car john is jamming to, is by Ray Charles. In uncle Buck, either him or the kid is jammin to another Ray song! Family guy does the best parody of the arguement bedroom scene!❤. The scene of different faces that steve alone on the train, Hughes just rolled, and didnt tell steve, he was filming! Also the movie was about 45 minutes longer but with a subplot.. Neils wife thinks hes cheating and completely makes up the Del story. When he walks through their front door, she had a surprised and shocked look on her face. He basically saved their marriage!

In the original script there are earlier scenes where Neal's wife is convinced he’s having an affair & that’s the real reason why he’s run into so many ‘delays’ - she believes it's so he can spend time with the other woman. So when Neal finally makes it home at31:07 and has Del with him, she knows he was telling the truth all along. That's why she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" and hugs Neal so tenderly. It adds a layer of poignancy but was cut as Hughes felt it was too much sentimentality. I disagree, I think there's been so much hilarity that it could stand a little pathos. The editing also means his wife's acting was a little 'off' as she played it with her suspicions throughout so axing the other scenes makes her seem a little strange to me. Also, the robber in the original script was a pizza delivery kid who’d brought them food earlier.

I also think it might spoil the pathos of the ending a little and the hilarity of the middle of the film to have that brought it. However without it she really comes off as a bit of a nutcase in her reactions to Niel's calls.
