A timeless classic with a fantastic soundtrack. The Predator design just might be the greatest creature design in history

I absolutely concur. It's partly why Predator is in my top 3 favorite films of all time. RIP Kevin Peter Hall, the man that brought the creature to life and made it believable.

I feel like you are discrediting the originality of the xenomorph. But that's probably due to time and how much it became a standard for aliens.

My favorite creature designs- in order: - Predator - Xenomorph - RoboCain (that design, was ahead of it's time and unlike ANY other creature/mechanical design of it's time. It inspired that sort sleak look. That thing is a nightmare, nay- a horror! A cyborg, housing a meth-addicted, sociopathic sadist... and it is the law! Nightmarish!) - T800 - The Thing - RoboCop

I'm glad they don't reveal too much about the Predator in this movie. They say less is more. The less you know about the Predator, the scarier he becomes. But it's also twofold. Because we know so little about the Predator, we want to know more and see what makes him tick. That's what the original Predator film is all about. Draw your audience in. Pique their curiosity. Reveal just enough to draw in even more questions! -OG

If one of our friends drops a thing and makes a funny noise, we laugh and then repeat that noise. We even see it at a zoo or farm. We moo at cows and "talk" to parrots, in THEIR voice, not our own. I think it's the nature of communicating with an unknown: we mirror back to it.

Arnold was one of those action stars that dominated the 80s. No matter what foe he was up against, we always knew he'd come out on top. He was always so much bigger 💪 than the bad guys. Was there ever really any question? However, Predator was the first time that I had questioned if he'd actually win. For that matter, if he'd even make it out alive. It was a wise move to bring in 7' 3" tall Kevin Peter Hall to play the Predator! He totally sold the horror aspect of a genuine monster! Kevin Peter Hall also played Bigfoot in Harry and the Hendersons. A nice family fun adventure. -OG

The Mummy..Creature Of The Black Lagoon..others like The Hunchback Of Notradame..Dr Jekyll And Mr.Hyde..phantom Of The Opera..then also there is King Kong..Godzilla. The 1982 Conan The Barbarian isn't a monster movie but has a giant snake..and a "wolf"witch. It's a sword and sorcery movie that Arnold Swarrzenneger is in, which was his breakthrough movie that put him on the map, so to speak.. before the Terminator role. Sword and sorcery movies have alot of monsters..like Medusa in The Clash Of The Titans. You are right about Kevin Peter Hall, he was a very tall man. 7 feet 2 inches i believe he was, but he was a gentle giant some people claimed, never complained much about being in the suit, could act for a long duration in the suit and was always easy to work with, during the year this film came out, he had finished doing Harry and the Hendersons, which is a family film you should watch, he plays a bigfoot that becomes part of the family, he would go on to repraise Predator 2. But sadly this would have been his last role as movie monster when he passed away in 1991 at the age of 35 from an HIV contamination of a needle during blood transfusion.

A comedy about a family camping trip where they find bigfoot and bring him back to the suburbs. Hall was a creature actor because of his unusual height. In 1992(?), he was in a bad car accident in Los Angeles. He was rushed into surgery and was accidentally given contaminated blood and, sadly, passed away. RIP Kevin Peter Hall. You remain a legend!

Great Reaction Cami like always, this movie brings me back to my childhood i remember watching this movie when it came out and its pure action cinema at its most efficient and charmingly unpretentious, Predator remains a lean masterpiece over three decades. There are some fun facts about it, Shane Black was cast for his script expertise, not his acting chops, Shane Black, who plays Hawkins, had previously written the screenplay for Lethal Weapon; he was covertly cast in the film so that he would be available to make on-the-fly and uncredited script changes while on set. Which makes it even more befitting that Black wrote and directed The Predator, the latest installment in the series. This was professional wrestler Jesse Ventura’s first movie. The GE M134 Minigun wielded by Ventura’s character didn’t shoot live rounds, but for safety reasons, the cast and crew were required to stand at least 50 feet away when it was fired. Sonny Landham who played Billy, the team’s expert tracker was known to have such a short fuse that the studio hired a bodyguard to protect people from him. This bodyguard followed Landham everywhere he went to make sure he didn’t get into any trouble on the set. On this, McTiernan said: “We had this 6’8″ tall giant who had to follow Sonny around 24 hours a day the entire time he worked on the movie and make sure that he never misbehaved.” The Predator’s heat vision isn’t actually heat vision, the filmmakers attempted to use actual heat vision for the Predator, but the specific camera proved impractical for the on-location shoot. Instead, normal footage was made into a negative image in post-production and exaggerated “heat vision” colors were added to create the effect. Originally used an orange substance for the creature’s blood, figuring they would spiff it up with special effects in post-production. But the orange goop looked so bad on camera, they decided they had to make a change. They wound up using the luminescent liquid from the inside of glow sticks, which they bought over the counter. Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original guy in the predator suit. The “Muscles from Brussels” was reportedly fired from the movie because he complained too much about how uncomfortable the suit was, he was replaced by Kevin Peter Hall. The original design for the predator was scrapped in the middle of production, the original suit resembled a lanky, bug-eyed insect, but McTiernan didn't think it was scary enough. He halted production on the entire movie so it could be redesigned. Arnold Schwarzenegger personally tapped effects wizard Stan Winston to revamp the Predator design. The break in production was a blessing in disguise. The stop in production to redesign the Predator allowed the filmmakers to edit an hour of the movie together to show to the studio. They liked it so much that they gave the production more money to create bigger action sequences in the last third of the movie once filming picked back up again. Optimus Prime and the predator have the same voice. Peter Cullen, who is uncredited in Predator, provided the voice for both. Now you know where the famous line "Get To Da Choppa!" comes from. You should watch the new prequel "Prey" from last year it's amazing! Keep up the good work!

Have you ever seen or heard of the special edit filmmaker Steven Soderbergh made of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK? It was an experiment in boiling down the essential nature of Spielberg's mastery of storytelling via visuals by losing the dialog, making it black and white and providing only a minimalist electronica style soundtrack. So you have few emotional signifiers from your memory of the theatrical version we are all familiar with like any specific dialogue or Williams's iconic score. It's all just what Spielberg did with his deft ability at visuals, telling the story and defining characters with just what the audience can put together by taking in the actions on screen. I think that maybe even more so than RAIDERS, PREDATOR could be the perfect film for that type of experiment. Yes, the soundtrack is iconic in this movie. It's filled with memorable dialogue and each character has a unique voice. But you could run the sound off and get what the essential nature of the story is because Mctiernan does a similar job as Spielberg in telling a story so we'll just with what he captures on film. I mean for the most part the last twenty minutes or so has little dialogue to begin with. Dutch's fight against the Predator has a lot of similarities to classic silent films, honestly.

What a cast! Jesse Ventura was an ex operator and actually bigger than Arnold, and they were never filmed standing together! Bill duke was an amazing actor...juliard trained and amazing in American jiggolo! Billy was a complete wildman and had 2 guys for 24/7 security. Not for his protection but to keep him out of trouble!! The helicopter pilot is the Predator! They gave him one speaking line, so he could get a film credit and his sag card! There's many more predator films and Alien vs Predator! There's also a much larger tie in here. Aliens predators humans Replicants and Terminators are all related by a race of beings called Engineers, discussed in the movie Prometheus! In the 80-90s, Arnold was the absolute movie king of the one liners/memes! So many to repeat, but the most repeated line and meme in history is, " I'll be back!"

Its covered more in the novel I believe but its been revealed that Billy's native brave background had him in tuned with the mystic/supernatural. Not like a major but its why he had a sinking feeling they were being watched/followed. Why he would fiddle with his totem/necklace. Why he was acting squirrely as mac pointed out. The part where he cut himself was an honor thing for him as it would be in a 1v1 but the ultimate disrespect for the opponent as by cutting himself he denied his opponent getting to draw 1st blood against him.

Predator race had been hunting humans for hundreds of years and understand or can translate English plus many other human languages. 🙄 He’s also not a soldier so when Dutch gets the stealth attack with the gunpowder spear ( That’s what what it was! 😉) he loses his shit and expends all his plasma shoulder gun ammunition! 😎

The first third of this film is much more fun if you read Dillon as Dutch's ex and the rest of the team as Dutch's friend group who know Dillon is trouble.

Good reaction. Absolutely no one gets that when the Predator fires the energy weapon at Dutch, it hits the rifle, not Dutch himself. I didn't catch that; I had to be told it, and when I looked closer on subsequent watches, I could see it. I like this movie a lot, but that was one small trip-up on their part. Considering how great the rest of the movie is, it isn't exactly a damnable offense. 🙂 You said you liked _The Thing,_ and wanted sci-fi/monster movies along the same lines. Off the top of my head and in absolutely no partiular order, I'd have to recommend _Predator, Predator 2, Alien, Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Terminator: Dark Fate, District 9_ (2009; it isn't a sci fi/monster movie _as such,_ but it's definitely not schlock; it's right up there with the other titles), _Life_ (2017), _Mimic_ (1997) _Annihilation_ (2018), and _The Fly_ (1986).

Aw thanks for all the suggestions and comment! It was really hard to tell with Dutch. Thanks for telling me that! I think they wanted that shock moment! Love to read your suggestions. I wish I hadn’t seen terminator yet. Judgment day is one of my favorite movies! But I haven’t seen the Fly! And will check out the others! Thanks for watching:)

There's been a lot of speculation about what the scorpion symbolizes over the years. I always interpreted it as foreshadowing for the eventual slaughter of Dutch's squad: A predator (Mac) killing a less effective predator (the scorpion).
@Noctambulo666
@Noctambulo666 Месяц назад
La escena del escorpión puede ser interpretado de muchas formas, pero a mi solo me parece un pretexto inteligente del director para mostrar al público una mano con garras dando a entender que aquello que acecha a los protagonistas desde los árboles no es humano.

You enjoyed "The Thing". How about another John Carpenter movie, "Prince Of Darkness". It is a tense slow-burn horror/mystery/sci-fi/spiritual store that is the second of Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy. It's not as good as the great "The Thing", but with a smaller budget it still has Carpenter's way of getting into you. A cool sci-fi time-travel element, science vs. religion, lots of bugs, demonic slime, Alice Cooper as the creepy leader of "homeless zombies", and Donald "Dr. Loomis from Halloween" Pleasence.

When the Predator fired his plasma canister, he aimed for Arnold (Dutch's) weapon. Not his arm. Unlike Dillon, who had his arm blown clean off. -OG

Is not that the Predator can speak, he just record phrases, that’s why he plays phrases like: Turn around, Anytime, over here, etc. and….. he uses Billy’s laugh at the end.
@NoelMcGinnis
@NoelMcGinnis 6 месяцев назад
Except that he didn’t have his helmet on at the end when he was laughing like Billy. That was him actually mimicking the laugh.

Also, I think if you take as a "hunter," thing, human hunters have duck calls and goose mating calls, etc, trying to mimic the language of their prey to draw it out.

Cami Interesting note is that Jean Claude van Damme was considered for the Predator role, but he was not right fit for the role. So, late actor named Kevin Peter Hall who was 7ft 2in in height gotten the role plus KPH had a cameo as copter pilot at the end. In 1991, KPH died from complications of AID's issues. KPH was infected by tainted blood during transfusion for surgery. Back to this movie, Predator's makeup effects were created by late legendary artist, Stan Winston and his team. Because of this movie, Predator has a backstory: his species are known as Yautja. Young Adult Yautja warrior flew in his ship from mothership on his hunting expedition in the jungles of Central America. Yautja citizens are warring people from their groups or clans. I believe this warrior is Youngblood Yautja on his 1st hunt. You can read up its history.

Cami Yautja Youngblood is collecting human skulls as trophies for his hunting expedition. I think more trophies that he collects more honor for his clan or family.

I don't know how familiar you are with the more modern Predator films. The 2010 Predators film is probably the closest feel to the original Predator if that's what your aim is. Predators is the story that they originally wanted Predator 2 to be but didn't have the technology nor the budget to pull it off. Predator 2 is the first film that teases Predators and Aliens are not only in the same universe but have also crossed paths. Predator 2 also has a tie to the latest Predator film called PREY. A Predator prequel dating back to the 1700s. I highly recommend it. Then there's the two Alien v Predator films. People love them or hate them. The last one is called THE PREDATOR. Please avoid it. It's an abomination to the franchise. -OG
