Well, Mac yelled, "CONTACT!!" Which means he saw the enemy. At this point, no one had a clue what was going on. What happened with Hopper's men and what happened to Hawkins. When they see their friend firing, they trust the enemy is in that general vicinity even if you can't see them. Better that than they shoot you and you never saw it coming. In short, they did the right militaristic 🪖 thing. Even if you (a critiquing movie watcher) disagrees. -OG

This is my 2nd fave movie EVER (Aliens is #1) and has been for 2 or 3 decades. I LOVE this danged movie- excites me every time. I read recently that it was originally written that Dutch won the physical battle but Arnold said that was unbelievable and demanded Dutch win by wits instead. It was so perfect that way, too, what a great call! There's a huge lore behind the Predators now, something to delve into if you're curious, but wow this movie holds up in the effects dept! So glad you enjoyed it! From music to make up, this flick just rocks!

One of the other things that really adds to this film is having a worthy foe. Most of Arnold's movies, he dominates. Bad guys are a joke compared to him. So, they really needed someone magnificent to compete against Arnold's muscles 💪 and they found him. They got 7' 3" tall Kevin Peter Hall to play the Predator!! This really added a new dimension for Arnold to work around. Finally, a foe bigger in every capacity than he was. Kevin also played Bigfoot in Harry and the Henderson's!! Classic movie!! -OG

MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE! Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch being 7'2". He even plays the helicopter pilot at the end of the movie. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches like Spielberg and Ford on Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. No hot meals were allowed due to the heatwave in Mexico. The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the movie and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990. The scene where the stuntman falls off the cliff and lands in the water blew out his kneecap. It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. It was 110 degrees in the shade while it was 42 at night. It was a box office success, making $100 million dollars ($360 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace. It's now considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

A little additional context for the fact about Kevin Peter Hall, they basically had to bring him in at the last minute because of Jean Claude Van Damme quitting. He was also a complete professional, never complaining while in costume, and that was an incredibly heavy costume with little in the way of ventilation. Because of that, they made him the helicopter pilot at the end, as a sort of thanks for the efforts he had made.

"You're hit, man. You're bleedin'." "I ain't got time to bleed." "Oh... okay." Fun Fact: Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out from the wardrobe department that his arms were one inch bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger's. He suggested to Schwarzenegger that they measure arms, with the winner getting a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost, because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. You're going to have to get up much earlier in the day to get one over a professional practical joker. Don't Drink It Fact: The Predator's blood - a goopy substance with the color of Mountain Dew - was made on-set using a mixture of the liquid from inside glow sticks and KY Jelly. Practical Effect Fact: The invisibility cloaking effect was achieved with a bright red suit (because it was the farthest opposite of the green of the jungle and the blue of the sky) the size of the Predator. The red was removed with chroma key techniques, leaving an empty area. The take was then repeated without the actors using a 30% wider lens on the camera. When the two takes were combined optically, the jungle from the second take filled in the empty area. Because the second take was filmed with a wider lens, a vague outline of the alien could be seen with the background scenery bending around its shape.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Год назад
DUUUUDE! Thank you so much for all these fun facts! The Jesse Ventura story is hilarious! Poor guy lost a the bet early during the film process. I’m sure they teased the hell out of him haha Also the blood being mixed with glow sticks makes sense. It always had that bright neon ish color to it. And lastly as a cinematographer myself (Ari) I’m still blown away by what you explained. Mixing chroma key techniques and wider lenses at that time. To then come up with an artifact that was purposefully shot and had the shape of the predator….It’s simply genius! The problem solving to save up on vfx and come up with as much of a practical solution as possible. This is something I miss these days. Cinematographers and directors going through a creative route to solve a problem and not immediately going to CGI. CGI is an amazing tool but I don’t think it should be used for everything. Thank you so much for such an insightful comment. Definitely made my day man 😃

Hey Ari and Denise, Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator in their "man vs alien" fight because that's what everybody expects from Arnie, but it was Arnie himself who said "I can't beat him. ------ He's a monster. The way these movies from the late 80s through to 2000 still hold up to modern movies and in most cases look better is a testament to how fantastic the then young movie makers were.

The shot of the predator shooting his shoulder cannon in to the trees with no idea where to aim was a great role reversal from earlier through dutch’s clever tactics and adaptability.

Hey Ari and Denise, I think you guys picked up on the ability of 80's action flicks have more heart and depth than you think. Today they are so preoccupied with the vFX that the forget to make the story multi-layered. That's what keeps audiences coming back for more.

As a fighter, I know why the Predator took off his weapons to fight Arnold: to see how he would do 1:1 against this creature on the same physical technological level. Hand to hand. I totally get it. Which is another reason why the Predator is so amazing.

I think the pschology of the predator as a huntsman is that he didn't take the soldiers seriously as a competition but slowly gained respect for them at the end with Dutch so the predator decided it would be respectful to make it a fair fight.

Nobody travels that far to fight someone they don’t take seriously as a threat. Predators visit Earth because they take humans as a viable threat and worthy adversaries. Humans armed with less have killed Predators many times before throughout history.

27:18 - The Predator saw them kill already. It knows they are worthy. If they discard their guns it will fight them on their chosen terms and kill them anyway, like when it stabs Billy or fights Dutch hand to hand.

Consider our own hunting laws; Can't bait the animal, can't use this or that type of weapon, can't hunt after dark or before a certain date. It 's like a safari to them. They have rules... Rites of passage. They kind of explain some of it in Alien vs. Predator.

One of the few, if not the only Arnold film in which he cannot defeat the villain with his biceps. The muscle he had to work out most in this plot is his brain as only outsmarting the Predator was he able to defeat him. Especially at the time, this really made a difference from an Arnold perspective. That said, Prey has brought the franchise back to form.

One the greatest, and weirdest movies of all time. With such a mishmash of style and tone, this movie just shouldn't work, but everything came together perfectly. Tremors is another example of this, a movie that shouldn't have worked, but somehow became more than the sum of it's parts

My favorite story about this movie is the original script had Dutch winning hand to hand, but Arnold Schwarzenegger pointed out it was too unrealistic, that he should outwit the predator instead

I love that! Very clever for Arnold to suggest that. Really made the film what it is. And it made Dutch a way more layered character than I expected towards that third act. He was so smart. And so much experience came through his acting. Him making traps, camouflaging and creating the best circumstances for him to win was probably my favorite part of the film! Thank you for sharing 😃

To answer your question about it being a "fair fight"...the Predator concept is a critique of HUMANS: They modelled the villain after US: As people WE hunt lions, tigers, rhinos, and other dangerous animals with high tech rifles, night vision, and camouflage/gillie suites/high hides. The predator's trophy hunting reflect our trophy hunting. The Predator's villainy reflects OUR villainy.

I remember going to the theater to see this movie with my dad. He wouldn't tell me what it was about and I just figured it was a military action film with Arnold, like Commando. Walked out of that theater shook. I'd have to say Robocop, Terminator, Alien(s), and Predator (1 & 2), Bladerunner, Total Recall, and The Thing really formed my love for sci-fi horror, action, and cyberpunk when I was young and it has stuck with me ever since. All really great movies that hold up even today.

Regarding the Predator's camouflage: The alien isn't a gladiator or a competitive athlete. It's a hunter. It wants challenging prey, but at the end of the day it wants to go home alive, and with its trophy. Human hunters don't give the animals they hunt an even chance of killing them. Even when the Predator gave Dutch the "honor" of unarmed combat, it knew that no human is a physical match for it.

36:55 is exactly the opposite of what y’all thought, the predator was actually scanning Dutch to check that he was a human, because this was something new to the predator, a human THAT capable and dangerous. So he was checking his skull to make sure of what he was.

Okay, so this is late, but the reason why Dutch and the others don't ditch their weapons is because they've already figured out that the Predator is a big game hunter. And the Predator has already seen that they (Dutch and his team) are resourceful, intelligent and dangerous. It's already marked them as prey, there would be no point in ditching their weapons. Anna attempts to pick up a weapon, only to get rebuked by Dutch because that would mark her as prey and the general rule of big game hunting is you keep the population healthy, you go for the trophy bucks or males.
@user-zp4ge3yp2o

Also it's already marked them out as worthy trophies, who's to say if they drop their weapons it wouldn't just shrug and slice them apart anyway, annoyed that they're ruining it's fun. At least with weapons they can fight back. It's annoying when people seemingly try and outsmart the movie..

To your point on continuing to use camo-mode, think of Human hunters, who use blinds, and long-range scopes, etc... When the Predator found one worthy of taking on hand to hand, he did it. The rest used guns and explosives, and so did the Predator. When he knew Dutch was no longer using a gun, he acted in accordance. Or, at least, that is what I got from it.

New to this channel and really enjoyed the reaction. Regarding the "fair fight" aspect of the lore, I think the Predator gives himself the same advantages any hunter does. The goal is to make the kill. When hunting dangerous animals we don't walk up on them and shoot in plain sight, neither does the predator.

Great choice for a film!! Was 15 when I went to see this, and still one of my favorites!! As suggestions if you haven't seen them, other MUST-see sci-fi movies from that time (aside from the original "Star Wars" trilogy): 1. The Terminator (1984). THE movie that made Schwarzenegger, director James Cameron and makeup artist Stan Winston. 2. Alien (1979). Has what many critics consider to be some of the scariest scenes ever put to film. Started the careers of Sigourney Weaver and director Ridley Scott. 3. Aliens (1986). HUGELY successful sequel to "Alien." The Queen (also created by Stan Winston) is considered one of the greatest movie monsters ever created. Another James Cameron classic. 4. The Thing (1982). One of director John Carpenter's best films. If you watch it, realize there is NO CGI or computer effects when it comes to the aliens; ALL practical, physical effects. The effects are so good they STILL hold up 40 years later. 5. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991). Yet another James Cameron blockbuster. First use of a CGI-generated main character in a film. The effects at the time were so revolutionary they helped show just how much computers can enhance quality filmmaking. Love your channel and your reactions!! Good stuff!!
