Cammenga is a well-known brand and their lensatic compass is considered the best in the world and is made in the USA. Cammenga is the vendor for the US military and produces the lensatic compass for military use.
The phosphorescent version comes in 3 colours - true Timber, coyote Brown and olive Drab which is an Army green.
The main body of the cover and base is constructed with a powder-coated, aluminium frame that is shockproof and damage-resistant.
The compass is waterproof and sandproof so is built for the field. It can perform in extreme temperatures ranging from -50° F to 150° F due to its non-liquid filled needle housing. It uses a copper induction-damping ring that slows, settles and steadies the compass needle quickly.
The rear site and thumb loop are all well made. And all the swivel or hinging parts feel solid and secure. There is a lanyard loop for a lanyard that comes with the compass.
There is a graduated straight edge with markings on the side to be used with a map.

admittedly, i know effectively nothing about hiking, bushcraft, camping, urban survival, or even knives in general, but this makes for a nice learning experience from your videos. they give me something informational to watch during these summer nights while i’m not in school. appreciate the consistency of your uploads!

Thanks so much for that! Glad you are enjoying the content. I am enjoying creating it too. I will admit is is much less time and space consuming than Lego 🤣

Good Video. I picked up the Cammenga Phosphorescent Lensatic Compass. Note: If the Declination Angle is known you can still use a Cammenga Lensatic Compass when you are using a Map. With a Base Plate compass you can adjust for the Declination on the Compass. So, the next time you look at the compass and map along your route, the compass will be adjusted. When using Lensatic Compass you will need to Calculate for the Declination Angle and Adjust by the number of degrees calculated when using a Map when using a Lensatic Compass. One of the reasons I chose the Cammenga Lensatic Compass is because of the Durability and solid build of this Compass.

Thanks! Definition important to factor in or calculate the declination angle if travelling long distances in open areas. Personally in my environment and use, it has not been necessary- yet! Thanks for watching!

Excellent video. I am guilty of buying the cheap compass. My main reason was not to navigate but to just know true north in order to know basic directions. I will probably upgrade later on.

Thanks! I am glad your cheap compass at least works! Unlike the one I had 🤣

I've been eye balling one of these, I have a much cheaper but good quality copy version that's about 15 years old. I definitely might need to pick one of these up after seeing this.

Thanks for sharing! This is indeed good build and it feels it will last a lifetime with normal use.

Great vid! Yeah no reason for a glowing compass at night. If I was outdoors and the sunset… I’d probably camp and conserve flashlights. Use the compass when I woke up.

Thank you for the video. However, I think a lensatic compass is good in any type of geography.

The Pouch is loose because it was designed to be used for a compass or a pressure bandage.

Hey, where do you print your maps from? I’ve been looking for a good way to print off custom maps for places I am going
@urbanknifeguy
@urbanknifeguy 3 месяца назад
@@rickzaleski3537 I have two sources. For specific small areas, I use the All Trails app and download the area. Then get it printed out. I also have gotten official topological maps from the local authorities/ agencies.

Someone may have mentioned this before but the reason the pouch has alice clips if the compass was made in 1977. The build date is clearly visible. I don't know where you bought it from but it looks like a surplus item.

I am quite certain this compass was made in the last 5 to 7 years due to the model. Plus, the company itself is not that old. Thanks!

This compass was made in June 2022. The 77 is just the lot number for any compass not made for a government order... "The manufactured date can be found on the inside of the compass cover next to the sight wire. In most cases it will be displayed as a series of 3 pairs of numbers: ## ## ## This format stands for the year, month, and lot number. For example: If the compass was made in January of 2004 the date would be displayed 04 01 77. The lot number 77 is a generic number for compasses made outside of a government contract. On some compasses, the date would be displayed as the year followed by the Julian date. The Julian date is simply the number of days that has passed in a given year 1-365. This would be displayed as a single number followed by three numbers: # ### For example: If a compass was made on the first of January, 1994 the date would be displayed as 4 001. If a compass was made on the last day of December, 1993 the date would be displayed as 3 365" cammenga.com/customer-service/faqs/

Is this the true timber they sell? The one on the website looks different.

Their website does not have a picture of the true timber finish, at least not when I got it. But yes I bought direct from Cammenga.

hi I recently purchase the compass in your video however what i have noticed it is always reading a different north position when i rotate the compass the north needle is never in the same position twice i have tried to re-magnetise it using the south point of a magnet it works then it doesn't and have removed the magnet well away from from the compass ... any ideas i bought it for my daughter who is about to trek across India in a tok tok race so need to sort it pretty urgently ... thanks

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you. I would assume you are not holding the compass near any metal objects like a belt buckle, tool, or keychain attached to it. No metal item is accidently lodged to the compass too. Other than that, if it is an original Cammenga, my only other suggestion would be to contact them to see if they have any ideas. Sorry I could not be of better help.
