Campbeltown Loch Blended Malt - Whisky Review 149
Can't get no Springbank, Kilkerran or Longrow? This may be the next best thing! A blended malt made from only Campbeltown whiskies. Occasionally also hard to find, this has been slightly more available lately and if you can get it at RRP it's not too badly priced!

The thought of a flipper losing out on money always warms the soul more than any bottle of Springbank could 😂 The latest release seems to be sitting on shelves near permanently online in the UK now, been tempted many times but never pulled the trigger. I will say from moving away from the seaside I do miss the seagulls. Great review as always!

There is nothing more delicious than the tears of a flipper 😂 I think this is good stuff at the price it sells for. Ticks a lot of the same boxes as Shackleton but better presented. Send me a crate and I'll see about getting you some of those seagulls 😂 Cheers Jeff 🥃

I always have a bottle of this in my cabinet and often add a wee drop of Kilkerran to it - or a drop of Longrow just to ' vary ' the blend a wee bit. Lovely stuff.

It is astonishing but here in Vienna you can just go to a big supermarket and buy Springbank 10 for just 58 Euros. Apropos Springbank: one owner of a special-whisky store from a German-speaking country told me that he got an email from Springbank, writing that if they sell Springbank expensive the distillery will exclude them. I am proud of this distillery!
@WhiskyLock
@WhiskyLock Год назад
It's been a long while since I've seen Springbank in stock anywhere! That's a nice touch from the distillery. Very responsible. I was thinking the other day that it'd be good if distilleries would sell us special releases unsealed to prevent resale. If you're buying it direct then it shouldn't need to be sealed and it'd mean that drinkers find it easier to buy. Of course it probably won't happen because many distilleries put sales (flippers or drinkers) above all else! 😕
@lxiaspb
@lxiaspb Год назад
very interesting, I believe that too. All experts (You, Ralfy, etc) speak about how difficult it is to find such products there in Great Britain, but here in Austria very few have the knowledge, therefore it is for us whisky enthusiasts easier to go to a big supermarket and buy some good stuff.

Love the Springbank group if you can actually get your hands on one! I do enjoy the Campbeltown Loch, I think it's a very well made whisky. I agree with your thoughts on the 'getting the best of each distillery' but my experience has been more often than not, blended malts felt disconnected, a bit characterless and all over the place. The category does seem to be getting better though as years pass so that's encouraging. Cheers my man!
@WhiskyLock
@WhiskyLock Год назад
That's exactly the problem. As good as Springbank is and has always been, it's no longer on the menu for many of us. I know what you mean about Blended malts feeling disconnected. I've experienced that in some more premium and more ambitious blended malts. Especially those with cask heavy components. Which is part of the reason why I stick to lower and mid tier blended malts where you quite often get better value for money. Whenever a blended malt approached the £100 mark I'm often left wondering why I didn't just buy a good single malt. That's my experience anyway. Cheers 🙂 🥃

I had a dram of this a couple weeks back, enjoyed it. The price of a bottle is not half bad given the way things are. This reminded me very much of Springbank 10, just, not quite as good. One thing we have to consider with Campbeltown Loch is that they are batch releases and, like Springbank itself, they can taste quite different. Batch 3, for example, had more Kilkerran in it (info from retailer) and was a darker liquid and profile. I preferred the lighter Batch 2. We're onto Batch 4 now. They all taste quite young but I don't mind that. I don't really care for the idea of the 'Best Blended Whisky' and I don't think this is better than other good ones. I was recently given a couple of freeby packs from a online retailer of Noble Rebel and I really enjoyed all three expressions. They go for £40 a bottle (46%) and are a Loch Lomond affair. Like the Campbeltown Loch they give no detail regarding the origins of the blended malts. Anyway, blended/vatted malt can be a good thing. JW Green doesn't do it for me though. WT
@WhiskyLock
@WhiskyLock Год назад
I didn't consider batch variation at all when putting my notes together for this. Because they didn't put a batch or year on the label (only in the bottle code printed directly on the glass) I assumed it would be fairly consistent. Everything is a batch release after all. Turns out that consistency was low on the agenda with this though. Interesting! I shall have to add the year of mine to the video name. The one I had was 2021. Quite pale and I didn't taste much, if any, Kilkerran. Shame because I've often preferred Kilkerran to Springbank or younger Longrow and I imagine it would probably change my verdict noticeably. Not that there's anything wrong with the 2021 that I had. I haven't had any of the LL blended malts. Tempted but I have far too many Loch Lomonds in my queue already 🙂 a nice problem to have... The presence of JW Green at the OSWAs always surprises me a bit. I like it well enough, even if it's not what it was, but the poor presentation makes it a £25 whisky for me, which is a rare discount. Yet another Diageo product with wasted potential!

I just tasted the Campbeltown Loch (bottled 9/23) against the Gauldrons batch 002, have to say I liked both bottles, anyway the Gauldrons is a more sherried expression, less peaty and a bit more elegant while the Loch is more peaty and more clise to the Springbank style. I would actually currently prefer the Campbeltown Loch, even it was lower in price, but both are very nice whiskies for sure (I reordered both 😀) and good alternatives to hard to find Springbanks.

Yeah I occasionally see Longrow NAS pop up. Definitely the most available of the true Springbank products. This Campbeltown Loch is much cleaner than that Longrow. Less peat, more fruity malt. I prefer it to be honest. I've always thought that Longrow (and Springbank) are better with a bit more age behind them.

I havne't owned a bottle for about five years. Not impressive back then. But it was easy to get the CS back then. So why waste money on the loch? It might be better now. A vid comparing a botttle from 5 yrs ago to now would be great. I've had the really old bottles from pre 2010 with the older label. Those were WAYYYYY BETTER. I also had the 21 from back then. Phenomenal. They all used to be at the highland stillhouse until it got busted and all the good whisky was forced out by the Ole El See See run by corrupt asch hoels who got busted and fired. Losers and Mick's place used to rule before it got the Cram. Now it's mediocre and Mick won't hang out because of BloVid Chineen.

Thanks for not adding more fuel to the Springbank fire. That being said, I've not seen this bottle anywhere around NYC yet. So yes, I too voted for Orchard House because it's very very good, and because I just don't see/but too many Blended Malts these days where I am. I have no evidence of this, but I read that this is Glen Scotia teaspooned Springbank. I read that online so it has to be true. Also, if we're being technical, there's only three distilleries in Campbeltown, correct? Glen Scotia, Glengyle, and Springbank; with Longrow and Hazelburn simply being brands made by and within Springbank. $40-50 would seem to be a fair price for a HQ Blended Malt in 2023 (I paid $50 for that Orchard House); beyond that, I tend to want more disclosure & info✌️

I think I voted for Orchard House as well. It's a very good blended malt and great that it's available all the time at a reasonable price. To be fair though I think both of these really showcase what's great about Blended Malt done properly. Teaspooned Glen Scotia is what I always assumed this would be. It would make sense. After trying it though I don't think so. IMHO it seems better than most young Glen Scotia I've tried. My guess would be Glen Scotia, Springbank and maybe a little Hazelburn. Yes Hazelburn and Longrow are essentially triple distilled unpeated and double distilled peated Springbank respectively. You could also argue that Kilkerran is double distilled Springbank because the distillery is very close by, owned by the same people and run by the same staff! At least that was the case when I visited a few years ago. If I said "five distilleries" etc I obviously meant five marques / labels. I blame J&A Mitchell for making things more confusing than they need to be 😉
