California welcomes you back! One of the reasons for Dept. of Agriculture checks is that we’ve had problems with fruit flies.

Hi Lulu, thanks for the warm welcome :) There were a TON of fruit flies up in Washington this year. The locals explained it was due to apple harvest time that we were there. It feels good to be in sunny CA.

I moved from Minnesota to Washington about 14 years ago. The drivers around the Seattle area in the snow is a bit scary. But then again in Mn we didn't have the hills to deal with. I have been enjoying your videos. We will be starting our full time rv life this summer. We cannot wait. Safe travels!

We use a small convection heater in the motorhome. It’s so efficient, silent, and no emissions. Especially great when you are plugged in. The RV heats up nicely, and the thermostat keeps the temperature steady. Compact and easy to store. A must if camping in the cold. Hope you warm up soon !!

Wow what a temperature and scenery change! Gotta love drive days! I am so glad you told about using the engine scan at the auto parts store! That is super helpful!! The pads in the front windows also look like they could be bullet proof vests - so there ya go - dual purpose! I remember going through the ag stop a month or so ago when we went from Oregon to Cali and they wanted to inspect all of our firewood - it took a long time cuz they looked through it with a fine tooth comb. I love the water idea - how much water do you drink in the morning? Fun video and fun time chasing the sunshing! Noelle

“Blue Driver” is a code reader you can get on Amazon for around $99 and leave plugged into your port and interface with your smart phone to read codes, reset warnings and get all sorts of data from including recalls on your rig. Updated thru the net via your cellphone.

A Bluetooth code reader is like $30 on Amazon. I use android so I use the "Torque" app (Can't make any recommendations for IOS). Not only will it give you tons of info on codes, but it can also access lots of sensors / gauges for real-time info (like intake air temperature, boost, coolant temperature, etc.). Haven't needed the gauges yet on my sprinter, but they can be very useful for diagnosing certain problems.

We actually went straight down the 5 and drove through Oregon this year and right into San Fran. It was getting late in October and just too cold. After SF we did the hug the coast and took the 1 through Big Sur and to Pismo beach. Then over to Palm Springs for the holidays. There we found our 80's and 70's! Now we are in AZ and enjoying the desert 🏜

Hey guys, I am loving all your videos. I am looking at a used 2015 interstate lounge so I have been binge watching everything airstream. You make the life look so wonderful🙂 you have a nice relationship so that is enjoyable to watch as well. Question for you about keeping your tanks from freezing... I know you have some tank heaters but is that enough if you chose to stay in a frigid/freezing environment during winter months? Or do you just stay ahead of the frost by heading south?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
Hey Robert, thanks for watching. We definitely seek warmer weather for sure, but you get caught sometimes in cold streaks and hot as well. The interstate is not a 4 season coach with the exposed water lines, but we have been in the high 20's overnight. (Did not use the tank heaters as you need to be plugged in for extended use) The water didn't have time to freeze as the daytime temps went back to the 50's. 30s overnight are doable with the heater running alot, 40's over night are much better, but still chilly, and the 50's overnight you might not need the heater at all.

As far as the reduced MPG, there is a Diesel Particulate Filter regen cycle vehicle's go through to keep the filter clean. Some of the better, manufacturer specific OBD2 tools can start a regen cycle manually. You usually need to drive a bit after to finish the cycle. From what I have read, the quality of diesel fuel you use has a big impact on regen and problems with the diesel particulate emissions systems. At least for Porsche (fancy VW) diesels, they have a very specific spec for OIL spec, C30. I would be careful with the oil changes and make sure an oil with manufacturer spec is used. I also run a cetane boost, which I introduced slowly. If the quality of your diesel is marginal, as you need to buy from places with low turnover, etc, I would also replace the fuel filter more frequently (every other oil change?), and make sure the chamber the fuel filter sits in is vacuumed out, as it is designed to collect water and impurities at the bottom.
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
Good morning. Thanks for the notes on the system. We did have a dealer do a regen under warranty, back in April of 2019 and the MPG's were just bad from around a year later (6-20) for just a couple months. Then the light came back on(9-20), but the MPG's were noticeably better. This MB emissions system is definitely the Achilles heal of the Sprinter van! Light is still off 2 months later and MPG's are still good. We will check out cetane boost, thanks again!

Does your air conditioning have an electric heater or heat pump mode? You probably don't since you have the propane heater, but you never know... Not sure if a diesel heater would be worth the space and headache to install, but they're very cheap for what they offer.

@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
Hello! Congrats on the Himi! Your going to love having an ebike. We have the 2021 Hollywood Sport Rider (HR1500) for fat tire ebikes and love it. It has an 80lb per bike limit. It's sold out at Hollywood, but Rad has it on their site. bit.ly/2UtO8sN

Enjoy your watching your journey! Did I hear right, 400 miles in 8 hours? Seems like it's a lot of hours for the miles.
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! Our first long travel day was Ocean Shores Wa, to Medford Or about 440 miles. Google maps has it at about 7 hours, but it always takes us longer in the van! We typically drive on the slower side and make frequent rest room stops!

@@IreneIronTravels I guess I see it as too many hours for the miles is because the only long trips I have been doing is from LA to Vegas, a nice straight line. LOL

You said you turned on the heater when the night temp was 40 degrees. That would be very cold for me. Do you recommend any warm blankets that you use?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
Yes, usually we set the thermostat to about 63 degrees or so when the temp drops into the 40's. When the overnight temp is in the 50's the inside temp stays pretty comfortable. We use a three blanket system (not including the bottom fitted sheet) that consists of a light top sheet, a medium weight duvet cover, and a medium down comforter with duvet cover. This way we can use the three in different combinations depending on the temps... hot or cold. One thing we are thinking about adding in from a recommendation from RV with Tito is a 12v heated blanket with timer. Brian swears by them and I would image they would be pretty toasty in cold weather. Something like this amzn.to/3kzF1kT

How do you like the folding locks mounted on your Rad Rovers?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
We really do like them. But, they take a bit of getting used to. Not as easy to use as u lock or cable lock, but is larger than then the u lock and much stronger than a cable. Love the storage cradle on the bike too!
@Pinky121971

Just wondering How do you get comfy in the RV at colder temps during the night ? do you fire up your heater/ furnace using your Generator power?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
If we are plugged in somewhere we use our electric Vornado space heater. Makes it a nice constant comfortable temperature. But, if we are not plugged in, while boondocking or a quick overnight spot, we use the van's built in propane heater. It makes it very toasty quickly, but it can be loud when it cycles on and off. Also, can get drafty if its really cold out in between cycles. With our upgraded lithium battery system we don't have to worry about running out of battery power, but depending on the RV it might drain them down. Typically you would'nt need the generator until the next morning to recharge your batteries back up, depending on your setup.

What brand are your floor mats & where did you purchase the mats? Do the mats remain in place?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
Hello! They are called WeatherTech mats and you can get them on Amazon or their website. The are custom for each vehicle and stay in place very well, but are also easy to remove for cleaning!

Make sure they let you into California or they let you leave. Personally, I wouldn't go there if someone paid me but I guess the weather makes it worth it for some folks. I'm starting to question your Minnesota credentials if you think 30s is cold. Haha.

Good Morning ☕️ Another great video ~ The states agriculture department does Not Care about produce bought in grocery stores. Pests are what they’re concerned with. Farm field produce or plants (with soil) is what they’re after. Makes sense ya know? Eggs are truly the problem a tiny pest lays tiny eggs (yuck) so people can transfer a whole generation of pests unknowingly. Wash them “organic” veggies & fruits...haha I had a lady bug in my romaine lettuce once! _kinda freaky_ Take Care ~ Safe Travels Edited to add: I’m more the tuck my sweatpants into the top of my wool socks kinda person. 😵

Good Morning! Totally makes sense with the pest that can hitch a ride with us! Chris always does a good job of washing(less while boondocking) and prepping our veg. Sometimes a whole batch of brussels sprouts would be ruined by little bugs! Protein??? Sweatpants in the socks....... That could be a popular new fashion trend! 😳

Mercedes guys do not want you to clear the codes because sometimes a cleared code might NOT come on again. Therefore they lose the business. (Min $350) They want you to become dependent on them. Worst case scenario the code will come back again. I have a 2007 diesel sprinter (same engine) with NO DEF system. I'm very happy because DEF systems are very unreliable, and have become a real money pit. Best advice: buy a OBD II scanner and a few sensors. You can buy a $50 sensor on the web and you can replace it very easily instead of paying the dealer min $600 plus precious time. Good luck!
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment! Yes, the DEF systems are way too complicated and can become problematic it seems! Once we are outside of the emissions warranty, I am also one that would do the work myself! Thanks for watching!

What is it like to shower in a Class B RV? Is a wet toilet a problem?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
It's not bad. Tight space, especially if you are tall or big, but you take pretty quick showers in a RV. After showering, you do a quick squeegee of everything and it dry's in about 10-30 minutes, depending. No problems with the toilet.😃
@joeflyer1
@joeflyer1 3 года назад
Thanks for the reply. I'm hesitant to purchase a Class B solely because of the shower setup, but since the two of you are okay with it, I should be able to handle it.
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 года назад
It definitely takes a bit to get used to compared to a "real" shower, but in a small space like a class b I would rather have more living space than bathroom space. A tip to make it feel better, is to upgrade the plastic toilet to a porcelain bowl slow close lid for about $200. That helps bring a residential fell back to the room!

We highly recommend covering your bikes. We have 2 bicycles on the back of our Boldt camper van. They are not e bikes but they are large frames. We have tried a couple covers and recently ordered this one www.etrailer.com/s.aspx?qry=2_bike_cover&furl=-pg-RV_Covers. We highly recommend it! We've traveled thousands of miles and it has worked great. A couple features are (1) bikes are totally covered and (2) the straps keep it from flapping. We drove through snow and the bikes stayed dry and clean. Rain and snow make for rusty parts. This cover is plenty big for our bikes with room to spare. Our bikes hang on our rack so not the same as yours but take a look.

We did! It is a Dometic CRX110 from their Marine line. We love it. Our old fridge was just a little too small for two people full time. It is about 30% bigger than the old one and I had to cut the kitchen side panel to make it fit. Scary, but it worked out pretty well.😳
