Campgrounds or dispersed camping, which do you prefer and why?

dispersed!

Dispersed definitely, just make a note. Don’t take outdoor showers in tall grass. Got a bad case of chiggers.

To me, the way I think about it is an established campground is like an apartment complex, and dispersed is like living in a house. The campground is a community living structure where everyone has a little slice with neck-to-neck neighbors and you're living off the company's infrastructure. You also pay money that goes to someone else. With dispersed, you're on your own, choose your own location, living on your own terms, have a lot more privacy, and not paying to live in someone else's place. But it's harder to get into the "market" and often requires more resources. I've been to so many amazing dispersed sites that I have never had a comparable experience at a campground.

ya and the bigger the rig the closer they park in an empty field. I am learning to appreciate people driving past all the beautiful areas b/c they are so ruiness piggish and unconscious

When first married, we used dirt bikes or a canoe to access areas where we couldn't hike. Didn't use parks and established campgrounds much. Along came kids, and trailers and campgrounds were more appealing. Then we built a house in the country, and travelling to be outdoors was less necessary than before. As our area became more developed, we don't get the same dark sky and quiet experience, and we do miss that tranquillity we had in remote areas. Your version of car camping seems perfect for you, depending on what you are in the mood for at any particular time.😊

Hi Diane! nice to see you're posting more often :) I do both, but most of the time I prefer boondocking. I love the freedom, being self sufficient and away from people. And it's free!

100% agree, plus, I love driving all the interesting backroads, even if they're a little unnerving... :)

I enjoy both but prefer to be where the people aren't. Like you said though, stress levels can get high when it's getting dark and you're in the middle of nowhere looking for a place to camp. If you're ever on I-80 going through Nebraska, there's excellent free camping in Beaver Crossing. You get water, power, and even access to the community center showers. It's a great stop for an overnight on your way to . . .

If the campground doesn't allow any kind of fire for cooking, bring lots of food that tastes good cold. Breakfast: Hardboiled eggs, bread, butter, avocados, fruit, pastries, juices. Lunch: lunch meat, tuna, pasta salads, cheese assortment, vegetables, dips, chips. Dinner: Pizza, chicken, salmon, shrimp (all cooked at home just prior to leaving), salad fixings, dressing. Dessert: Cake, pie, brownies, cookies. Then just do it all again the next day, and the next. Might have to make a couple of trips into town for ice, but no firewood😉.

Great ideas for a road trip too, where cooking is awkward or you're too tired to deal with it after a long drive day. Joann, Thank you so much for sharing!

@dianeschmiane Yes, these foods convenient for road trips too. Better to keep track of calories and nutritional ingredients while on the road, rather than pulling into fast food and ordering something expensive and healthy.

Hey Diane … Campgrounds or dispersed camping? C: None of the above. I have long term friendships with land owners in about a half dozen areas (and growing) that allow me to camp (and sometimes fish) on their properties. I am always most respectful of them and their land. All areas are gated and some are code locked. I leave all areas better than I find them, respect the land, am quiet (except the first time I caught a 7 pound bass on a private pond), and yes, I’m 100% catch and release under 8 pounds, and only one over eight pounds … a wall hanger if or when I catch it. Anyways, I am in Texas, and we have a feral hog problem, so I am always armed and prepared to use it if necessary. All land owners understand and approve. I leave all gates the way I find them and they know me to be a skilled outdoorsman, fisherman, and hunter. I am quiet, polite to a fault, friendly, and outgoing. I try to be the person that you WANT on your property and this works tremendously for me. Hope you and hubby are doing well!!! God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Atascocita, Texas. ✝️🎣😵‍💫👨‍🌾😵‍💫🦌🙏

Charles, that's brilliant... Something I hadn't considered, but probs more accessible to you as a fellow rancher? Though there are some people who let you stay on their land for a small fee, will have to try that. And of course Harvest Host, but I can't do that because I don't have proper bathroom facilities with me, something they require. Nice to see you!

I’m just starting so going to camp grounds first few times. I’ll be car camping. Wow the camp grounds in Ontario are charging $55. And $60 per night. Not cheap anymore and this is without the extras.

After years of campground camping, Im ready to try dispersed camping. I notice many folks camp this way in cars or RVs - What's your thoughts on safety with dispersed camping in a tent?

Totally fine, don't even need the tent; cowboy camping is magical!
@dianeschmiane
@dianeschmiane Месяц назад
Dispersed tent camping is fine, it just takes a little longer to pack up. But I wouldn't leave a really expensive tent unattended, use a cheaper one just in case... :)

is there a way to find overnight parking within areas or does planet fitness keep track of you if you bounce around? I have 6 weeks until an apt opens up and I would like to keep working.

iOverlander covers all kinds of places to sleep, including parking lots. I've never been a member of Planet Fitness so I don't know how they track you.

okay these areas are being trashed by flushable wipes!!!!!!!! put kleenex in your pocket in a packet or a baggie, wrap the used one in a dry one, it will dry out
