Camping and riding when your equipment fails on a road trip?

What were we thinking riding and camping across Kansas and Nebraska in the heat of summer??
Heat! Equipment failure! It’s all part of long-distance motorcycle travel, but boy is it hard sometimes.
Plus, sometimes we find some of the weirdest places to camp as our battle against the high heat continues. We hightail it across Kansas and Nebraska trying to get north. It’s time to put on the miles - but isn’t that the beauty of all motorcycle trips?

Had to laugh at the train situation. I camped at a "free" campsite in Montana once which almost every town has and it was right beside train tracks. They even had restrooms and hot showers. I thought i died and went to heaven. The grass was so green and soft I could not wait to get to bed and catch up on some rest after a long day of riding. I no sooner went to bed and the ground started to rumble. A mile long coal train went by about 50 feet from my campsite and that countinues about every hour all night long. It was kind of like a therapeutic massage every hour until the automatic sprinklers came on at about 3:00 a.m. to water the beautiful lawn I had pitched my tent on because it looked nice and soft. Living on the road in a tent has its moments, but they have made some of the best memories ever. This video brought back one of those great memories for me. Keep up the good work. Hope our paths cross again. Enjoyed seeing you in Springfield at the MOA rally.

Nice scenery out that way to be had, but it just ain't stackin' up to the blue ridge. I don't think anybody thought that living on the road is a bowl of cherries. We like to say you're living the life and all because it sure is nice to break free of the grind. We romanticize what we perceive as freedom and adventure, mostly because it's beyond our grasp. We go from "I could totally do that", when we lack the resources, to, "I wish I could", when we lack the fortitude. Ultimately we stick to our comfort zone while we dream and wish and envy or pity. But at the core, life is basically the same on the road as at home. Dang it guys, I got this tune stuck in my head, 🎶 Ain'it funny how her new life didn't change things She's still the same ol' girl she used to be 🎶 😂 Cheers!

Camped in a popup camper in Steamboat Springs CO one year and the train track split the campground. We were on the highway side of the track so didn't know how close we were until the rumble of a coal train about 1/2 hr after we hit the sheets. Boy were we surprised.

For hydration I use a camelback style backpack and add electrolytes. Makes a difference ,specially in heat up to 116 F. And to aid in keeping the body cool, a buff soaked in water (around your neck) provides much needed evaporative cooling.

My most recent 50 days of MC tent camping this summer , tent poles , air pillow , air mattress all failed. All this equipment had at least 150 + nights use . All with warranty but required new purchase on the road. Klymit air mattress and pillow required only phone call and picture for replacement. Marmot is now 10 wks and is telling me maybe 5 or 6 more wks for replacement . I give you two credit for hauling around huge camping gear . Enjoy your videos !!!! Update now 12 wks on tent pole warranty replacement from Marmont , still waiting ........

Used to work for Coleman. White color marine style coolers held ice the longest. Dark colors absorb heat from the sun. Lite colors reflect the heat and absorb less sun. Most soft coolers are pretty much day use only. A small hard cooler with a refrigerator style seal and latch would hold ice much longer depending on how much you open it during the day. God Bless

lol, The trains. I camped in north GA once and thought I had a great spot on the lake. Ughh, Trains on other side of the lake all night and evidently there was a road crossing just up the lake from me so horns were sounded about every 40 mins all night long. lol. Just enough spacing to let you doze off again between trains. Still had a beautiful view in the morning though so it was a trade off. Y'all be safe out there.

Truly hate dealing with coolers when car camping. So much so I added a solar panel, deep discharge battery and a compressor fridge to our gear. It's a tiny fridge but no space is lost to ice and nothing gets soggy. Wouldn't work so great on a motorcycle though.

Had to laugh at the BEE-at-triss pronunciation. having been there many times visiting relatives. Beware of those Nebraska dirt roads if rains ,they get gooey slick ! Low speed, dumped our Goldwing twice. You might look at the small rack that plugs into the hitch (like a RV) to carry a cooler. Can you bend the burner tang a little closer, on the stove to hold the coffee pot? Hwy 16 west of Buffalo and Beartooth pass near Red Lodge are Beautiful. Not sure about Gardiner since the floods

Greetings from Seward, Nebraska! Would have loved to have met you on your way through. For your coffee pot on your JetBoil (or other larger camp stoves), try using a bicycle brake disc rotor. They are available in various diameters, but it should fit across the pot supports better, and provide a more stable platform for your smaller diameter coffee pot.

Just a little tip from someone that has lived full time off grid with Solar. Solar Panels are VERY sensitive to shadows ect. If only 10% of the panels are shaded it will kill 100% of panels power. Best of Luck and be aware when in camp. There are things in national & State parks that people are not being told of. NO JOKE

I use a veskimo cooling vest, it pumps ice water from a 9 quart cooler. 8 - 10 lbs of ice is good for 4 hours. Close all the vents on the Stich to stop condensation, keeps the core from getting too hot and being stupid. You regulate the flow to suit conditions. Veskimo stopped making them but there is an identical one at the Cooling Store. Best $500 spent.

How do you like the Tiger compared to the GS? Also does Richard miss his GSA?

I wonder if you could set the skillet on the jet oil and place your coffee pot in it to make it stand up safer

Had to give up camping. I airbnb it. I do miss the spontaneity of camping though.

Have you tried an RTIC cooler? I’ve heard good things about them.

I miss the days of base camp. Where you set up a camp with the RV and then explored the area. Too much stress with all the stuff on the bikes. You seemed much happier with that style of travel. Why be uncomfortable with tent life and weather issues when you have the rv?

Airbnb. Haven't been burned yet, and the price is reasonable, cook from them.

Okay, I was out of the US for some time and noticed no more trailer and RV, beside getting rid of the BMWs, what happened?
