Camping in the Cold November Rain: 6x12 Cargo Trailer Camper Conversion Dispersed Camping Disaster

I wanted to prove that camping in my 6x12 cargo trailer camper conversion could be warm and cozy, even in the wet, cold fall PNW November weather. The first night went off without a hitch. It was cold, but I got my tarp awning set up, made a campfire, grilled some chicken, enjoyed a beer and a cigar, and settled in for a pleasant evening in my dry and warm enclosed trailer camper toy hauler setup. It rained very loudly overnight, but I had no idea what a rain camping disaster I would wake up to. My tarp awning blew down overnight, and by the time the sun came up I could tell that camping in the rain was about to get a lot more uncomfortable, because my entire campsite had begun to flood. After a few hours sitting outside camping in the rain, making some coffee, and sitting under my tarp shelter, I decided that even the super cozy confines of my cargo trailer conversion toy hauler setup weren't going to be enough to make it through another day and night out there, so I cut my rainy camping trip short and packed up and headed home.
Fall camping in the rain is fine most of the time....but with the sideways winds and wind chill of 34 degrees, I just decided I'd be better off packing up and heading home from my cargo trailer camping trip a day early. Dispersed camping in the fall and winter in the PNW is not for the faint of heart...and I'll be sure I'm better prepared for my next dispersed camping cargo trailer camper conversion trip.

I hate camping in the rain, unless I can stay dry. Many days spent steelheading in rain snow and cold but always a hot shower afterwords. Next time try opening the back doors with your tarp out the back. That way you can run the heater/stay dry and have warmth. It wasn't a FAIL. It was a learning experience and we got to learn from your experience. Thanks Dork

Maybe install a awning that stays on the trailer. May be a nice addition. Inside a inverter with a 12 volt deep cycle battery to run your TV AND LAP top for those real Rainey days. You can trick that trailer out. And a warm bed for the pooch most important. We used to camp all winter. Has its benefits. No crowds. Cold sunny days are the best with light rain at night. Also I put a solar panel on the roof of my camper best thing I ever did. Never run out of 12 volts. Like your travels and your friends. Rusty from Blaine WA.

And with the 12volt system you can install a diesel heater.

Good work! Knowing when to call it is a valuable skill of its own. I think one of your challenges is that your tarp structure is dependent on the location and position of your truck/trailer. If you had a tent or tarp that you could set up relative to the weather.. higher ground, with back to the wind.. you might have had a very different experience. As you were you had your opening to the wind, so all the water just blew in. You're still an educator at heart. You put yourself in a challenging situation for the purpose of learning and you learned. Success! See you next time.

Reminds me of when I was in college. I worked at a State Park. A buddy I was working with wanted to go camping so we got our days off work scheduled together. I went out to the campsite to set up. He declined to make the trip due to the rain. It rained all day and all night. I woke up in the middle of the night when a fat cold drop of water landed on my face. I was pissed as my tent never leaked before. I turned on my flashlight and the tent wasn't leaking. It was so humid it was actually foggy inside the tent. Condensation on the inside of the tent ceiling was what was dripping down on me. 4 AM and I packed up and called it. No fun was had. lol

1) Aim the Mr Buddy heater at a good sized stack of stone pavers, or something similar. When you turn the heater off, the pavers radiate the heat for a few more hours. 2) Everything camping related (like plates) into two large totes and it all states in the totes between trips - saves repacking for every trip and better at not forgetting things. 3) ear plugs

Consider adding a small window to each side of the trailer. Not expensive, and it COMPLETELY transforms the experience of being inside the trailer when you have some natural light.

That you're willing to try... GETS MY VOTE!!! SO, now that you're going to increase the insulation ('sound-proofing') and designing a awning for the trailer... We'all look forward to seeing/hearing about your next attempt. ABOVE ALL, you're starting simple and easy... Then moving to complex. Too many of these 'campers' go full-on 'sun-hugging' crazy with batteries and crap. Eating off the grill was pure savage... Absolutely beautiful spot...

Funniest video yet, I can so totally relate as I've been there more times than I can count including motocamping (not much sense in my younger days). Only changes I'd make to the trailer is an attached overlanding awning and a window on the side low enough you could see out of from a camp chair. That would be golden in any weather.

Not even close to a failure, It was a learning experience. Where to park, tarp set up, ect. Anyway to attach a rail on the side of the trailer to slide in a tarp. then angle the tarp down from the trailer. using the trailer as a wind block. Maybe you can not use the side door while the tarp is up but you may have a dry and less windy spot to sit. Or maybe a pool noodle on the side door so it slides on the tarp.? just a few thoughts

Had a propane heater and even a second tent with a porta potty.. We froze our butts off. Was a record cold and windy week. We lasted a day or 2 but ended up staying at my aunt's house 30 minutes from our hunting spots. 3 days in the cabin we didn't plan on 😂

When you said, "a forecast of 34 degrees wind chill," I immediately thought, "What is the forecasted actual temperature? What is the chance the forecast is off by a few degrees and the rain changes to snow? How many days of extra food do you have? Is this about to become a video about more extreme adventure than you had planned?" So yeah, considering the forecast, the InReach as the only communication and other things that were not going to work as planned I hope that I would have made the same choice as you. You may want to consider installing a way to get 120 VAC power into the trailer without leaving a door open. Either a through hole or a through cable would work. With either of these once at home you would be able to run an extension cord to the trailer with a small electric heater inside and the vent open to dry the thing out. It would also come in handy at a campground with electric power. I do hope to see more of Chewie in future videos. In the closing scene I was half expecting to see him on your lap and looking at you trying to say, "start the d@** truck and turn the heater on."

You should consider going with a portable awning like a 10x10 Caravan brand. Some come with side walls, some you can buy side walls for. Then bring 4-5 5 gallon buckets and place one on each corner and fill with water or rocks to run your corner lines down to secure from the wind. You can place 1-3 side walls on for privacy and wind protection, you can hang lights from the framework and a 10x10 is large enough for your table and seating. The 5th bucket can be used for the center of the awning if it is really blowing. This is what I do and it works well. PS I also am from Oregon, ride a DRZ 400S and just ordered a custom 7.5x14 V Nose cargo trailer that will be used in a similar way as yours, basic simple camping and cargo hauling.

You might want to consider using the back doors as added space to put the tarp on on, doors open to shield you from the sides, and you could enjoy the view as well, just angle the trailer for a great view

Hey Ben maybe you can get me a definitive answer? Will a gen 2 center stand fit the new KLR? The only people I've contacted were Hepco and Becker and they couldn't give me an answer. Thanks for your help 🙂

Based on the fact that everyone is making a new one for the new model, I'd say they probably don't

@@DorkintheRoad oh I didn't know they're making new ones. Thanks much. Maybe you can let us know when somebody offers them. Changed my rear tire tonight using just a snap jack and about snapped it straight into the trash! 😄

What a quitter, I would have stayed… lmao! That’s what you told me to say. In all reality I would have left in the morning, way before you did. Cause I’m soft and weak. Glad the trailer was nice and warm. That rain on the roof was LOUD!!

Dude it was so loud. It was waking me up like every 30 minutes all night. Next time I'll bring earplugs.

@@DorkintheRoad I'm more soft and weak, some would call me a puss. I just own it. I have a full on RV and don't like camping in the rain. Probably wouldn't have went in the first place but way to give it a go and test your set-up!. Failure? No! You're a better man than I. In my younger days on the southern Oregon coast I rode in any weather, didn't matter as long as I was riding. No so these days. Now I look for 50+ weather. Seems getting older has created an aversion to being cold and more so cold and wet. Did a couple short 30-40 mile rides this past weekend here in central Oregon but it was above 50 degrees.

Crappy time with the weather- enjoyed the vid though. I would have sipped on some rum..slept..then gone home.

Put a rubberized rv roof coating on the trailer. Should prevent the drips being so loud.

Interested in the concept of camping in a cargo trailer. My current set-up is a 4Runner towing a lifted 10' x 7' utility trailer that hauls my UTV. I have a pickup bed tent that works in the utility trailer. My concerns with the cargo trailer are that not only are most too short to fit my UTV, but also are so low that I can't get one to the remote camp sites that I prefer. I never even thought about the horrible acoustics of sleeping in one.

That doesn't look like much fun. Camping in the rain kinda sucks so I agree with your decision to take off.

Dude, lookup on youtube some PVC/Tarp canopy designs that can be connected to the side of your trailer. It doesn't have to be that hard. A second DYI tarp that extends out 3ft and then comes over the top of the trailer will stop rain from hitting the top of the trailer (and kill heat in summer, cooking trailer). Put that one on other side of trailer from the first. Best is if BOTH can do the others job, then you don't have to care which way you park.

I wonder if you could cover the top of the trailer with a bunch of pine tree branches? Or just some old blankets ? They would take the rain drop impact to drown out the noise. Wring them out and dry out on the fence a day or 2 later 😂

You Wuuuuus!! Just kidding, I would had done the same thing, Lol... However, if I were deer hunting, then maybe not. When your hunting, it’s a different mindset, and you learn to push through some of what Mother Nature throws at you because the reward is like no other.. Plus your set up for the particular task. But with all that being said, rain is one thing, strong wind is another, and deer don’t move as much in the wind, so, yeah, I probably would had dug out anyway... Unless I had a bunch of friends there and it turned out to be a beer drinking mud fest! Lol...

Got an idea for you to be able to winter camp in the trailer and safely run the heater more so you stay warm put sleeper vents like oldschool semi sleepers on the sides of the trailer might help

Mount an awning off your van like the one on the picture of my old patrol and put a side wall off it and you’ll be better setup for the wind and rain. You’ll find it heaps better. Liked the video though thanks.

I like your mode of presentation, not acting silly sht...On point I'm up with your latest vid about your new direction, but camping is so very relevant to adv travel, hauling in or not. Tarp setting rules, wet or dry. Get that worked out Get the camping basics figured out and it all become much easier and comfortable Don't drop the camping
@JeffCorcelius

You need to get a small dehumidifier. Let it run in the trailer after a wet trip. Works great in campers. I use one in my bathroom to keep the moisture down.

You couldn't learn if it was going to work or not without trying. How about a standard easy up instead of the lean-to-tarp that you brought? They are a pain in the ass to put up alone, but relatively sturdy once they are fully deployed. I was still entertained and you still got a full view video out of me.

You went out and did it. You learned but that doesn't it was a waste since left early. My two suggestions would be buy a Chinese diesel heater and get some windows in the trailer.

Don't be too hard on yourself. You'll take away many good ideas from the commenters (like ear plugs) and be more prepared next time. Win-win!

I would have packed it up, unless there was something I really wanted to do. There are some good videos on diy awnings you might want to look into hanging one off the trailer. Also someone mentioned a tote or two for the trailer. Keep dishes and stuff in them so you don't forget.
