We overpacked, while Camping we chose the wrong tent - the list could goon of the mistakes we made on our 1st in a long-time motorcycle only 1500-mile road trip to Georgia. But in typical fashion, we made the best of our situation and explored some of the most amazing areas around North Carolina.

Thought: ditch the bike covers. The only thing you need covered in the rain is the seat. A small piece of tarp cut to size and bungie-corded on will do that. A small microfiber towel to wipe all the rest down can be wrung out almost dry, weighs nothing, and will take up almost NO space. Stuff like that cast iron frying pan needs to be replaced with a lightweight modern camping equivalent. Generator? HELL, no... pay the extra for powered campsites... that thing's an ANCHOR! The cots are fine... we're all too damn old for sleeping on the ground. Half as much tent, but twice the quality, will serve you far better. (As a BICYCLE camper in past years, I learned to be frikkin' BRUTAL when it came to paring down my gear to bare minimum. Nothing like being the motor on your own cycle to teach you the hard way what you really don't need.)

Weather is unpredictable. With all the electronic information, it can still change daily. I agree about the tent; cheap is not good. Buy it, set it up in your base camp yard during a stormy night and check it out. I've slept in everything including pup tents. The tent needs to be easy to set up in the wind and resilient against bottom leakage and flying apart. I don't like tent flies because they can fly off. But I do like a separate fly that covers the entire camp site for shade and protection. They are dependent on having trees. I also like the idea hammock tents that suspend off the ground, though I haven't had a chance to use one yet. There are some adventure tents that one can stand up in, but they are not roomy. But they are sturdy.

We used to stay at The Blue Ridge MC Campground back in the early 80’s. Henry and Dee were the original owners. One guy in our group lost control of his Goldwing, and it ended up in a tree almost in the river. Henry pulled it out of the tree, and stored it for us while the owner healed. I believe Henry had an art piece on display at the campground with a motorcycle in a tree, from a real event. Our friend broke 4 ribs and spent a week in the Heywood Med. Center. I hope they get the campground up and running soon.

Great photography. I love your upbeat attitude to the challenges of motorcycle camping. A swollen foot in a motorcycle boot is no fun. My buddy continued on, wearing a sandal over a bandage wrapped sprained ankle kept dry by a garbage bag for three days of pouring rain. Ride on is the motto.

I lost my ozark trails tent in Curt Gowdy park when a wind and rainstorm came tnrough and shredded my tent poles. I can laugh now but struggled that day as I couldn’t dry my stuff and was so drenched I couldn’t face traveling for another. I soloed on my motorcycle for much of 2007. Got a eureka in jackson hole that just gave up the ghost last year.

My wife and I had great luck with a Coleman 3 person tent with a Vestibule. Any tent you choose must have a vestibule in my opinion. Used it several times a year for 10 years before it failed. I will only use a hammock now. My current hammock has a full bug screen, I use a tarp to completely cover it and all my gear. S Biners keep my gear off the ground and connect to the 550 cord used to suspend my tarp. A Thermorest bed mat under my sleeping bag makes all the difference.

Great tent. I have a Redverz Hawk 2 - 4 seasons! It comes with the inner sleeping bay already clipped into the outer fly. Set up, even in poor conditions, is flawless. Look them up. It also fits in my BMW pannier! If you want more space, just get the Redverz Atacama, same easy set up, but larger and heavier. It even has a garage for one bike or I use it as my kitchen. You can stand up in it! Mine is 8 years old and not a single problem - no leaks. All my stuff goes into 1 Wolman bags and 2 Ortliebs. None of them ever leaked! Even through monsoon seasons in Central and South America!

It’s not enough to have a tarp under your tent, but your tent should be set up under a tarp, if you can find campsites that have enough trees around them to suspend the tarp, then once the tarp is up, you run a rope under it to serve as a ‘ridgeline’. I know a large tarp can be heavy, even when folded up, but a 15 x 15 foot or 20 x 15 can make for a drier camp. If you look around, you may be able to find really large tarps made from nylon so they are much lighter and fold up smaller. Setting up a tent under a tarp really changed tent camping for me.

If any of the tarp that is under your tent extends beyond the boundaries of the tent floor itself, then it will just catch the rain and funnel it back under the tent where it will eventually get through the DWR coating via the bathtub effect. That's why dedicated footprints are often smaller than the tent floor. A tarp or footprint should be thought of as something to protect from punctures rather than something to help with rain. Affordable tents such as those sold in chain stores, are rarely seam sealed at the factory because that drives up their cost, so it is likely that the rain entered the tent body via all of those punctures caused by the threads in each seam. Just a hunch though.

Hi Chris and Richard, enjoying your travels now you can see some green trees again. Here in England an old building is usually well over 200 years. In our church there are wall paintings from the 12th Century depicting St Augustine and King Richard II. I ring church bells and at one local church the 4th was cast about 1380 and is still rung regularly to this day. That is old, how many people have played a musical instrument that is over 600 years old?

I guess it takes a pretty change of mindset when one is used to have a little house on wheels and can afford "redundancy" and extras-just-in-case, and goes back to the real motorcycle touring mode - which is one carries only what the motorcycle can carry. Basically, they key is asking the question: do I really need this item, for my every day life? if the answer is "maybe, in the case of ...:" then it is a NO. Mind you, either of you have one full motorcycle. Those who have been sharing the bike with the spouse know what I mean.... When you had the little trailer, that was already a luxury life in my opinion!

We ride two Ktm 790 adv bikes we use a crua xtent max says three person but two with gear is perfect , bought it on sale for $230. We each use 1 gallon Moto jugs for drinking water on the bikes while riding and a 1 gallon water rotopax on the back of my hard bags for the campsite.

Love your attitudes and adventures, and I am wondering if Richard is missing the comfort of a Harley Bagger. This is coming from a BMW RT rider. SAFE travels you two.

I see you're using sleeping bags. I no longer do. I have a fitted sheet that slips over my sleeping pad and I use a tech blanket in the warmer weather and a down quilt in the cooler weather. It's not quite like sleeping in a bed, but much closer. I hate the feeling of being constricted into a bag.

It was great meeting the two of you in Springfield, MO. You have my card with my contact information. I really did mean that you have a place to stay in PA when you are in the area and I would be happy to chart out some interesting rides and things to see and do. I have hookups for your rig and you are welcome to use this as a base to expore this area. I have over 400,000 miles in the saddle and lots of people have gone out of their way to help me out over my travels. I would love to repay the debt. I also would like to talk to my BMW/Triumph dealer about a meet and greet with you that might be worth your while. You fit the mold perfectly for them to pack the house. Ride safe, love following along on your adventures.

There's this awesome camping gal, I think you've met her, Amanda-you know who I'm talking about. She has more that one video on camping gear. Especially cooking gear, I know you're not keen the balancing act of some of the gas stoves, I think if you do a balance between cooking your meals and eating some meals out you can down size your kitchen significantly. Again I can't emphasize enough, go watch Amanda's videos on gear. We're all cheering you on to be successful and happy.

I commend your efforts for camping and staying with it,however living on the road is to hard when you have to carry so much! You are not roughing it but whatever works for you both. Again when you live on the road it’s hard full time. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. There are ways of being more comfortable. I’m 65 and wouldn’t attempt this at least not the way you are doing it,but it is the cheapest! When I was a lot younger I would travel with a sleeping bag and sleep next to my Harley! I have watched all you’re videos and will give you credit for touching it out! Safe travels!

What I did for years was go to Walmart once a week, buy a six pac of the cheapest T shirts and underwear. When dirty I would mail it home and replace. Now I have a dozen packages ready to go at my sons place. Once a know where I am going I have him mail me a box general delivery in some small town on my route. Then I pick it up and send one back. I wear shorts and leather chaps and carry a couple pairs of jeans. Rinse them out and hang overnight and no sitting around in laundromats.

Quality throughout. The Story, Characters, Filming, Sound and Production is 5 Star. Not many get that from me. Regarding your STUFF, still far, Far, FAR too much ! I Toured Eastern Canada for 6 Months in 1983, but I did it after 14 years of Bike Rally's, Holidays with the Girlfriend or Solo Wild Camping Expeditions. I knew EXACTLY what I would need, one EIGHTH of what you Two carry each. And there was STILL stuff that I did not use and was not critical to Solo Completion. Rally Bikers learn from each other. A Single canvas faced Airbed has a built in variable pressure Pillow, and it will make the Roughest, Coldest ground Smooth and Warm. TWO Sleeping bags. One quality Mountaineer's Mummy style, and One roomy of the Envelope style. One can get wet, you have a spare, put the Smaller in the larger for a TOASTY Night or just one for Cool times. THREE changes of clothes, Gloves and Footwear. And a complete Miniture 12v Sound Studio in a 24x18" Flight case holding a 8 Channel Sony Mixer, Two Walkman MD6 Pro Cassette Recorders with comprehensive Microphone Pairs. By this I achieved several Recording Firsts, ENORMOUS Satisfaction, and a BRILLIANT Holiday of a Lifetime ! Sometimes you should leave those fold out Martha Stewart Comprehensive Kitchen and Barbecue gadgets nehinh ond pursuit of your now first interest. Your Amazing Recordings. Edit 10% of that (litterally 'Decimate'), then trim down. Get your bikes above all be as Light and compact as possible. I know. I have learned by other People's miistakes, AND by the things they learned.
