I appreciate your videos, Bjørn. Can I ask what it takes to mount the roof tent on and off the car? Is it easy for two persons, or a bit heavy and strenuous?
Thanks! I’d say it’s OK for 2 ppl to mount it on the roof, if there isn’t anything else added to the tent (like solar, roof bars, awning and such). When adding extras I think it gets heavy for 2 ppl. I ended up using a pulley/lift system in the roof of my garage to make the task easier.
I think it weighed 64 plus roof bars, plus a DIY awning in aluminum. Maybe 80kg. It was a bit “over weight” but worked pretty good. I did mostly see like scuff marks on each rubber foot. And a small dent next to one of the feet. But I think that is from mishandling it when trying to lift it on/off by myself. From what I know now I would have been more careful with it and wrapped the roof where the roof bars make contact on the roof.
@@BasinBjorn hi Björn. I am reading that THULE recommends NOT using a tent with the factory aerobar clamp style roof rack because it can damage the roof. I have a Thule RTT but now am afraid to use it because of this warning from the manufacturer. Do you have any experience about whether this is truly a safety issue or if these bars are sturdy enough to trust a tent on long term?
I did hear about that Thule recommendation. I did not get the Thule bars though, I got the polestar ones from the App. But I’d guess they are quite similar and from my use I got some small wear / scuffs where the rubber feet touch the paint on the roof. I also got a small dent close to one of the feet. And a rock ship / dent on the roof as well. I believe I had something from the road bounce on the windshield, under the tent and then strike the roof. Other than that everything worked fine for me, but I felt that I had to sit somewhat in the middle and be careful up there. To not put weight to far back/ front in the tent.
@@BasinBjorn Thanks Bjorn! I appreciate your experience. Will you continue to use the RTT on your polestar? It sounds like I will be able use my RTT on my polestar as long as I am very careful. I wanted to make sure this was practically safe to camp on top of, since this is my only vehicle for adventuring with.
I just put it on there with double sided tape. The cable is held down with zip ties, but to add the zip ties I had to drill through the hard shell and then seal it with construction adhesive. It works fine, stays on. Got 70 something watts from it at max. (It’s a 100w panel). When I don’t use the panel I just route the cable inside the tent and store it like so.
