To be able to talk about a motorhome toilet for nearly 40 minutes non-stop is a skill few people have, but it's one I have managed to hone.
However, if you wish to skip straight to a certain section:
00:00 - Introduction and titles
00:45 - Overview of the Thetford iNDUS system - the Revolution of the portable toilet
02:32 - How the Thetford iNDUS System works - Cartridges A, B, & C
03:52 - The Thetford iNDUS App
08:30 - A look at the loo itself, the short flush, the long flush, pulsating flush
12:27 - How to Empty the iNDUS system - both grey and black tanks
15:15 - How to stow the Outlet Handle of the Thetford iNDUS system
16:36 - FAQs, the pros and cons of the Thetford iNDUS system
30:49 - Real life Emptying / Discharging the Thetford iNDUS system
34:24 - Final thoughts - What do YOU think about the Thetford iNDUS System?
One of the most distinctive features of the Luxury Motorhome Bürstner Elegance I 910 G is its inclusion of the Thetford iNDUS system. Thetford iNDUS is more than the just the toilet - it is the entire plumbing system including fresh water, black water, and grey water.
The Bürstner Elegance I 910G has a 140 litre fresh tank, 110 litre grey tank, and a 50 litre black tank.
We put the iNDUS system through its paces for a week and give you a REAL LIFE review on actually using the system in anger.

Very, very clever indeed. Whether it's too clever depends on the quality of the engineering... one point about chemicals that everyone seems to forget is concentration i.e. the bottles may be the same size but that doesn't mean they have the same amount of nasties in, unless we have a full chemical analysis (unlikely if there's a patent) then we just don't know. I suspect that was Thetford's point about having the same impact over 4 weeks compared to domestic loo chemicals i.e. the volume of indus chemicals may indeed be much more but if they contain less nasties per ml then it could be comparable to the volumes of loo cleaner, rim blocks, etc. used domestically by the average (likely not septic tank owning, environmentally conscious) person. Non green chemicals are a major, major issue though as lots of us have switched to formaldehyde free, green only, 100% of the time, septic tanks or not. My own feeling is that we're about to see the options diverge massively. Blades, cassettes, etc. are a minor innovation really from bucket and chuck it but feels like we're about to see revolution via a split to super hi-tech i.e. indus type systems vs super low tech - composting or waste burning dry toilets and hyper water saving e.g. some really clever grey water recycling/filtering for showers ideas out there amongst makers :) very few low tech solutions out there commercially at the moment though; I guess it's a low profit margin game at that end of the market... As to being tied to Thetford for refills, really annoying for the consumer but who can blame them given how much investment must have gone into inventing this system, all the development work THEN convincing manufacturers to try it. They've got to be assured a return somehow otherwise they don't have a business; it's Rolls Royce's power by the hour concept or printers and ink cartridges all over again, mind you it's easy to replace your printer to a new system if the manufacturer starts taking he micky... not so much for jet engines or indus systems ;-)

I think that the most impressive thing about the indus system is, that finally, Thetford have managed to create a toilet that has a flush that goes all the way around the bowl. Instead of going half way and then dying out :)
@iainathairydog
@iainathairydog 2 года назад
The secret to a good flush is to clear (or remove) the mesh filter in front of the flush solenoid, and to turn a tap on just a tiny bit before flushing, so that the water pump is already at full pressure.
@davidmbell
@davidmbell 2 года назад
What loo do you have Ian? If it's a manual flush C200 then there's a plastic clip that can break off the bottom of the pump that means it still flushes but is very weak. Let me know and I'll reply with more info.

This system seems to be closer to the holding tank system in most US RVs. One hose to empty both gray and black, black first with a rinse from the grey tank, except it’s more complicated and more expensive with the proprietary chemicals. And it eliminates the main convenience of a cassette, which you can empty in a number of different places, including a regular toilet.

Interesting system, but I’ll stick with my composting toilet. It uses only a little bit of vinegar, and I can go 6 to 8 weeks before emptying the solids… 🙂 Thanks for the video!

I can see the advantage for you but unless you’re on a super pitch, you would only be able to stay at a MH friendly site with the MH emptying point, unless you use what Andy said was available, a wheeled container, which would put you back to square one with a cassette? Emptying a mixed waste system would require quite a few trips?

By my reckoning it will need to huge, or maybe they are in talks with colapz. Maybe they can make it smaller if you/we can interrupt the "download" mode. I still love. Andrew, I very much enjoy the presentation in your videos. Your videos are a fantastic resource for prospective motorhome buyers. That said, and please do not take offence, these informational videos are just too long. Reviewing a product like this shouldn’t have to take over a half-hour. I still watch your videos because they are good but if I were to come across an interesting topic from an unknown youtuber, I’d be very hesitant to even play the video if it’s so long. 15 minutes is a more reasonable time. Just something you may wish to consider in the future. Best wishes!

I like the long videos, I guess people have different opinions - which is good, what I would say though is that Andrew has thoughtfully created and named chapters, so one could quite easily skip those that aren’t (in somebody’s opinion) relevant.

Thanks. To be fair to you, had I not had the trouble with breakages and failures, and had I had the motorhome for a longer time, I might have been able to make a more concise video. But shorter and more concise needs a lot of planning and scripting - two things I just did not have the time to do on this occasion. This is why I put chapters in the description. Not septic tank friendly would be a big problem here in the US. Many rural camp grounds use septic tanks. In fact, they are restrictive on the waste water from some portable systems we have here. And the fact that you can't just do a grey water dump to extend your time in that case. The first thing I would do is order a spare set of chemicals. Those bottles don't look too big. But the No Septic Tanks is a deal breaker for me.

excellent review. great t-shirt. it all seems a bit cumbersome and expensive (on the other hand, if one can afford this motorhome ...) but it is an innovative system and it will either develop or flop. also, it kind of makes me appreciate the simplicity of my 'porta potti' (Fiamma Bi-Pot 30) under the dinette-bed of my completely toiletless Freedom Caravan. ;o) ... but yeah, apples an pears, obviously.

Hi Andrew, There is also the extra cost to factor in. I suppose it could be said that if you can afford the rig you can afford to run it. However if you have spent your “life savings” on the motor home and you’ve the extra cost of the fluid , postage and packing if you are abroad could be a dealbreaker if you have no other way of sanitising your setup. All the best to you and yours.Rab

As you said you can get a wheeled tank if you don't want to move the motor home.. can you imagine the size that would be( you can't just syphon a little off) so the whole system needs emptying.. try carting that to the chemical waste lol.. another "Wilheim Crapper" vid that super interesting and informative.. cheers guys!! Looking forward to the next.

Let me first give compliments for those who try to make water systems in the campervan industry more efficient. So what Thetford is doing, is much appreciated. And i do love the idea of saving freshwater, by flushing toilet with grey water. And i also do like the idea of emptying the grey and black at the same time. But with the toilet you simply do not save that much water to stay longer off grid. Bigger black, grey, and fresh tanks do make you stay longer off grid. Showers are using the most amount of water and energy (warm water), and the toilet is using the least amount of water. Thetford or other manufacturers could better focus on a filtration system that makes from grey water, freshwater, so you can use the same water multiple times. These system exist on sailing yachts, so its not something that doesn’t exist. Its just still to big for a small campervan. Thanks for the video

Comprehensive and informative as always Andrew. Excellent review. I do think the system is too complicated and will probably be limited to a few high end motorhome and caravan builders like Burstner. I doubt many van conversion companies will buy in to the extra work needed to install it. I did think about the Thetford cassette cleaning machines (remember them?) which were the 'next revolution' in motorhome toilets a few years ago.....complicated and unreliable....wonder if Indus will be the same?

This is almost a classic MBA business case. How to tie your customers into a premium product. For me the reuse of water is excellent, would be good to see something in the caravan line similar. But to be tied to one supplier given they could stop providing the chemicals at any point or double the price is risky.
@G-ra-ha-m

Reuse of water? I use my water showering and washing up, washing veg. Very very little gets used in the loo, the whole cassette is about 1 10L watering can - not a problem.
@I_Was_Chrispy_Kreme
@I_Was_Chrispy_Kreme 2 года назад
@@G-ra-ha-m Hey Graham, what I meant was that in a normal caravan, you take potable water through your aquaroll into the shower & sink and back into a wastemaster. My comment wouldn't it be good if the waste water in the wastermaster could somehow feed the loo. I take your point about being only a small capacity for the loo, but if we are to attack climate change and be more green reuse of grey water I think is something to be looked into. Best wishes
@G-ra-ha-m
@G-ra-ha-m 2 года назад
@@I_Was_Chrispy_Kreme Climate is dictated by the Sun, I doubt using 10L of extra water will affect that :D. But I agree about being green, I always use bio safe products in the loo, and of course avoid fluoride toothpaste, which is highly toxic and ends up on grey water. Overall, I think the huge number of things to go wrong with this system render it unfeasible: when you press a button and nothing happens... all the problems suddenly become very real :))
@hayard61
@hayard61 2 года назад
Thanks for that Mr D. I'm one of those on the fence about the whole system. I get the civilization bit and for that a big plus. But, to me, it seems rather faffy. We don't have an issue emptying our loo. It's much better than lugging the old Elsan bucket over to the toilet block. I get that some peeps don't like handling the waste and this idea stops that. Also, it's putting extra cost on leisure vehicles and it's more to go wrong. Does this rely on an app? It seems, these days, more and more things are shoved to our phones. What if my mobile phone is lost or stolen? Just a few thoughts of my own. In all, a good idea, but, maybe, not for me. 👍

A very interesting video; thank you. Like you, I have a septic tank and so that is a "no" option for emptying. Wanting to travel in the UK, I am concerned about the emptying but as I intend converting a Mercedes Sitcar Beluga 2, there is plenty of locker space for the three tanks and they can be much bigger than on your RV. However, I am not sure as to why you cannot empty it into a septic tank, as when the tank is emptied, the tanker goes to the sewage works to unload the waste. I plan to go away for two weeks at a time so the tanks would have to be at least double the size of those on your RV. The other problem is that I do not have a smart phone. More research needed.

Andrew. At 33:25 you lifted "the unit" and water dribbled. I think you should squeeze the blue button at that point, which would lower the silver bar and close the valve. (As you did later) Then, when you put "the unit" in the receptacle, there won't be any dribble. So, I think the order is: At the dump point Black carry handle up Blue button (seal the valve) Lift the unit Place it in the receptacle and spin to retract the hose. Lower the black handle. Push the tray in. Close the door! Flush with success (sorry)

Thanks for such an informative review of the indus system Andrew...my concern ,given that we are more concious about spreading germs (Covid -19), is related to the app on the phone; surely this is an ideal place for germs to congregate I know that not all will be as hygiene aware as others and as we generally carry our phones around with us I am not convinced about the wisdom of pairing with a phone! Thetford should just leave it to a panel sited in the van.

I am old enough to admit that I used to rail against innovation electric windows, central locking etc.. bound to go wrong, not needed etc etc, and of course am now a happy user of all of this and more!!! But I can't help but think this system as presented at present has not enough advantages .... I think the exclusiveness of the cartridges and their 'un green' content are a distinct problem and the fact that you can't operate it without the app rule it out for me! Also the cost of the system, the installation costs and its complexity of installation and maintenance might be issues. It needs Thetford to underwrite its longevity in the market and invest in technician training, parts supply etc...... I'm not convinced at this stage! Thanks for highlighting and reviewing, onwards with great content Andrew!

@nothere7198 2 года назад
Seems like a simple update to the system to allow running some volume of the gray tank water into the black tank to better manage total capacity would be an idea. A function of the flush action logically. Of course, that will use more of the product, so I'm sure Thetford can get behind the idea lol. For myself, pass, no questions, easy decision. It's just more technology to break down and pricey limiting chemicals to restrict options. Thanks for the thorough review though !

How much does the Indus system add weight wise to the MH as oppose to a normal cassette toilet. I do go on extended 2 month plus trips so having to carry all the extra chemicals is going take a huuuge (matron) chunks out of my payload. Does this also mean I have carry grey waste all the time instead of doing the normal emptying before setting off.

Andrew I’d be interested to hear about 2 aspects not mentioned on this; 1-dealer service costs & schedule (annual/seasonal) 2-mechanical failsafes/backup for when the electrics die, due to batteries not charging/LB failure/no sun WRT solar & no mains hook-up, or simple fuse/breaker tripping in the middle of the night. Also if the system is ‘constantly on’ agitating even when not pumping what is the systems average daily electrical power consumption vs leisure battery capacity🤔❓

Another brilliant Video Andrew - my negatives are as follows: (1) Availability of product - whilst in the road? (2) What happens when there's a problem with the operation? Currently my cassette is fixable by me 😉 (3) as you suggested grey water tank would need to be bigger! 👌 My positives: Great system for off grid! You mentioned a movable tank for use onsite if you didn't want to he moving your MH every 5-7 days? In addition I've recently purchased “Bob” and they also gave an app ordering system which is directly linked to Bob. I organised this to be delivered to our site in Carnac no problems. (however they are based in Paris Fr 😉. Cheers Chris “The Aussie living in the Netherlands “ 🇦🇺 btw looking seriously at family trip to the Hebrides next Summer 2022!!

Andrew, have you had any feedback from sites, especially the two major UK clubs, as to whether they will accept Indus waste down the grey disposal drains? Also, did you notice ant tissue residue on the grid you used for disposal, or is the macerator and final rinse really that good?
@andrewjditton
@andrewjditton 2 года назад
Hi Eddie, I've not had the opportunity to ask the Clubs. There was a tiny bit of tissue residue on the grille, but that was easily sloshed off with one pass of the treated grey water.

An excellent review. Thanks . I've just visited a CAMC site. Upon booking in the Warden was quite specific with their instruction that the motorhome service point was for the emptying of grey water only and not black. As an alternative I think an Indus user could on that occasion have parked near an outside Chemical disposal point as the hose would probably have reached. Because of that sort of issue I think that whilst the system may be ready for use, there is presently not an adequate infrastructure available in UK campsites to make it a viable option.
@eddiedownes9084
@eddiedownes9084 2 года назад
If that means Indus cannot be discharged other than black waste points, as a gravity drain system it would need to go into another container before depositing in the CDP. That does seem to make the system less efficient. Thetford need to do more research and negotiation with the clubs to make this useable on both sets of club sites.

@iainathairydog
@iainathairydog 2 года назад
I would certainly not buy a motorhome with this system. Here's why: 1. Too much to go wrong. Macerators are notoriously unreliable in buildings. I can't image they're better in a motorhome. Even the ISS has macerator issues! 2. I don't go to places where there is a black waste disposal point within reach of a short hose. Grey waste, rarely. Black waste: only on Aires in Europe. 3. There's no need. A toilet cassette lasts us four days with two people using it (tip: flush the absolute minimum). A 48 litre Really Useful box in the boot holds the spare cassette. So we can manage 8 days between empties. And the water and grew waste tank are both good for a fortnight. 4. All those chemicals! One sachet of bio laundry liquid is good for a cassette. That's the only chemical we use, apart from a couple of 2-litre bottles of cheap diet coke to rinse out the grey waste tank once a year. So we can empty the grey waste down any drain, empty the black waste down any toilet or sewerage manhole. 5. It's all too much to go wrong, more stuff using precious power, more unnecessary weight. The whole concept reminds me of the con of inkjet printer cartridges where you pay eye-watering prices for miniscule amounts of ink. With this, you're locked in to buying Thetford bottle of chemicals. Though I suspect that adding a "top up" hole (with a screw lid) to each of those cartridges will be one of the first things some people will do. This system seems to be a step in the wrong direction for me.

Am I correct in saying that your grey tank was almost full but that there was plenty of space in the black tank? If so as you were flushing with grey water couldn't you just flush the toilet a few times to free up grey storage? Obviously this would use some chemicals but it would release some capacity.

I was thinking this could not be fitted to caravans because of moving to an emptying point. We don’t tour but stay on a site for full trip. But you mentioned a wheeled tank so in theory, baring in mind you would probably need extra tanks in the van, it would be possible to fit in a caravan in the future. Are Thetford looking at this because I would say there are more caravans on the road than motorhomes so from a business point of view it be in there interest to look at this.

Still not sure what to think of it. You cleary showed the pros and cons. At the end of the video when you emptied the system successfully the pros where quite obvious and I found myself smiling, the idea of a quick and non smelly release of (black/grey) wastewater is very tempting. We'll see if the system becomes more spread and long term users can share their experiences. 1 question (I may have missed it): did you mention/do you know how long the cartridges last until they need to be changed/refilled? And thanks for your commitment. Jutta

In the USA, the dump stations have an actual connector. You pull your sewer hose out of your RV, and connect it to the dump station with a locking connector. When the presenter turned on the system and the end of the dump hose jerked and twisted slightly as the fluids came down the hose, all I could think was "OH MY GOD IT IS GOING TO TIP OVER AND SPRAY THE ENTIRE AREA IN POO!". Also, if you do not have a system that grinds up the black tank contents, don't you end up with poo logs and toilet paper all over the grate openings when you dump it?
