@DanielDavies-StellularNebulla
@DanielDavies-StellularNebulla 3 года назад
Tripper will never fill those same boots. And I don't mean that in a bad way, I just mean that he's a different dog, and so will fill different boots. And that's important because it means that Joe is going to need to be flexible with the boots Tripper ends up filling. He truly is becoming a full fledged dog that Tripper!

He probably needs a mat to lay on so he’s not laying in water...I’ve always used a mat with my dogs because it’s less slippery for them...gives them confidence in the canoe!
@patbarbuto8751
@patbarbuto8751 3 года назад
I was thinking the same thing, laying in the water can get uncomfortable for Tripper, and like you said he won't slip as easily. Tripper shouldn't be wearing his backpack in the boat it could be dangerous, he should be wearing a vest that way Joe could let him swim longer distances and drain more energy! I worry about Joe not wearing his vest if that canoe flips there's a good chance it will fill with water and his gear will go everywhere. You can get exhausted pretty quick if your trying to save your gear and upright your canoe, I've seen it happen. Plus, if you are in the middle of the lake or in choppy water it gets even more dangerous for both of them without a life vest! Please, Joe, wear your vest and buy Tripper one, we don't want to lose either one of you! My friends' friend actually drowned in calm waters when his canoe flipped, very sad day!!!

The fact that he tried to follow your direction, but relied on his own instincts and did well is encouraging. It will come together at some point. Plus it was a hard challenge test to start on. He's a good boy. For the first three years, they think their name is: "Do you want to make it to your next birthday?" Once he settles in and matures, he's gonna be a very good boy. What's gonna be hard, is keeping him focused and IN the boat if/when he sees another moose. LOL That much swimming probably did a lot for burning up that pent up energy of his. Heck, Joe... you have a lake in your back yard. Put a life jacket on him and swim his ass into the ground a few times a week. He'll get stronger and the weightlessness of it will help his injury to mend as he strengthens. When you hike, load his pack up and work him. He'll love it. Good video, need more fishing though.

Unfortunately I never got to go camping with him, he passed away in July at 10.5 years old. Tripper is a high drive high energy dog, you need an e-collar if you want control off leash when out in the wild with lots of distractions. I am able to control my shepherds using just the vibrate function. When he chased the moose you were screaming no no no, but praised him chasing frogs. That’s mixed signals and confuses him, say no to chasing all animals. Teach him that toys are the only “prey” he gets to chase.

Perhaps your next breed should have a slightly lower energy level ^^ I still remember going from a labrador to a Golden retriever/ border collie mix, the amount of energy some breeds have is obscene... I did find out that I could keep my mixed breed calm, by keeping her close to me - like between my legs while in a canoe, that way I think she felt safer - atleast she stopped shaking and wimpering.

Joe, I had a black lab female who absolutely VIBRATED any time I took her duck hunting. Perfect manners and control, quiet, watching the sky, but 100% of the time in the blind, it was quiver city for her. It was either the anticipation of the shot, or the retrieve that had her on high alert. Soon as we unloaded the guns and climbed out of the blind at the end of the day, she was perfectly calm and a regular dog again. She was a bump on a log at home. Get used to it with fishing and if he sees wildlife he thinks he can chase (your probably lucky that Moose was that far away, and in the water; a land sighting and Trip buddy would have been off like a canon shot and un-callable. Nice marathon man !

At what age did you start getting tripper ready for riding in the canoe. And how you decided not to use a dog life vest

I camped close to here last year. A little south at pancake bay. I live about 2.5 hours east of the Sault. I've been sticking around locally since this whole pandemic. I'd love to get out there but eh, I'll wait. There are plenty of small lakes and river around here. Thanks for showing me what I've been missing!

Is Tripper No and Tripper Stop the same dog? It looks like only one dog in the canoe.

Hey Joe, great to see Tripper is doing well and his leg is fine! The campsite you guys had would be my ultimate if I was canoe camping. You have shade. you're in the woods and you still have a view of the river and bonus , not many bug's! don't think you could ask for more. I think Tripper did great for his first trip. Never owned a dog so I don't know what I'm talking about, always had cats.👍🏕
