Would the Travel Channel...Discovery Channel...PBS...please give this man a show?? This is so much better than 90% of anything you find on "regular" media.
Great video Slim. People often overlook these little gems when they travel through the prairies and Midwest. There is awesome beauty to be discovered in every topography. Loved your Hugh Glass dramatization.
Another awesome video! Anyone who questions whether or not that heat is "dry" or not, has never used a wood burning stove in their homes and it shows. You have to use a humidifier to keep things in your home from drying out. Lot of people just put a kettle of water on the stove or even a large pot of water.
its really phenominal when you put your wet boots bear it and all your other ensemble that comes off after being out in the snow and now youre in a tshirt warm as can be.
That was very interesting and a great camp ground also. A big thank you, Slim, for stopping and taking the time to explain and show off such a nice piece of country.
Your engineering always fascinates & your humor makes the explanations fun. Adding in the amazing photography & editing skills makes for a favorite channel. Much appreciated.
Slim, the content & creation on these videos are truly inspiring & motivational. As a truck driver, your videos have given me a drive to get my own camper and stealth life going. Keep 'email coming!!!
Wow, you really did a beautiful video depicting the iconic great prairies and emigrant trailways. You make me want to drop everything, get in my vehicle and immediately drive there this moment. Thank you Slim for your continued excellence in travelogue videos.
Thank you for telling me about Huge Glass. I did not see the movie. Truly a piece of American history that should not be forgotten. PS..your meal looked great!!!
Slim, here we have yet another wonderful example of your work. Your observations (and the manner in which they are articulated) are brilliant. Thank you for sharing.
South Dakota is one of the TOP states to get residency in, NO STATE TAX, NO TAX ON SS INCOME, NO TAX ON PENSION, 24 HOUR RESIDENCY In Texas u have to live there for a year to get residency and Florida 6 months. Those states also tax friendly.
Eileen Murphy ... I can’t wait to become a citizen of that great state ( wherever it is) in about a years time. New York City has been good to me but I’m ready for a place won’t tax me in my old age and charge $13 for a warm beer at a baseball game.
A very enjoyable video Slim, again! You certainly are an explorer in your own right, and you always seem to share your day to day experiences in an interesting way. I really appreciate your efforts! Cheers!
Since you asked, i like to mention that you can add a small cup in fire chamber and a thin metal tube right above the cup with a funnel on the other side of tube outside the heater to use waste vegetable or automobile oil from restaurants-auto mechanic shops to drip from a tank with a valve of some kind into the cup to burn, this way not only you have a dual fuel heater, but you can regulate the oil drop and heat all night at room temperature and not get too hot an hour and freeze the other while you sleep not just in very cold day but in spring and summer as well. I hope this was helpful.
I really enjoyed the feel and style of this video... thanks for taking the time to tell the tale.. I have to watch the video on the stove as im wondering what the "beans" in the cylinder were for. It be fun cooking with you.. lol
About 2 weeks ago, where I'm at, we had 3 days of heat over 100...one day was 106...I was asking how did they move west in covered wagons? dig post holes? (Which is what we did in 90° weather), the everyday life stuff!!. we're such "sissy-la-la's" now.
Gosh, I love those perfect mornings. The dry heat is so essential from time to time. Going to look up that little Charger/Detector... looks good for my Mini RV. Cheers.
This, along with all your videos, was fantastic! I wish I could come up with better words of thanks and good job and all of that. And if I could I would give you a ton of thumbs up! These are such interesting and high quality videos and I look forward to more. If you had been my history teacher, I would have paid attention and learned something.
Philosophically, there's a lesson for all in Hugh Glass. Never give up. Fight for life with all you have. If beaten and not out, you scratch and claw and persevere. Grit and determination go a long way along life's path.
Your version of the saga of Hugh Glass and the grizzly is orders of magnitude more honest and authentic than the nearly 100% bogus Hollywierd film version starring Lenny D. The entire video was up to your high standards as well. Well done, Slim!
Awesome video, SP. Your re-enactment was "grizzly". The campground looks like a great place to camp. The folks worrying about the woodstove not being dry heat have probably not ever lived with wood heat as their only heat source. I actually kept a kettle of water on my cast iron stove to add moisture to the air (and this was in NW Washington where it's always wet). My father was a "mountain man" who built custom muzzleloader rifles and pistols. I grew up attending black powder Rondezvous where, as a young girl, I was enthralled by the tales of Hugh Glass, Jeremiah "Liver-eater" Johnson and other mountain men.
Yes indeed. Wood heat is indeed very dry we keep kettle on our stove as well. Jeremiah Johnson wasn't the liver eater's real name, it was John Johnson. He had a vendetta against the Crows who killed his wife & his unborn child. He killed many Crow warriors & ate portions of their livers until the Crow finally sued for peace & Johnson agreed. Just out of interest, I live in NW Washington too. are you in the Bellingham area?
Wow, as a South Dakota native, this was a cool video. Seeing the pasque flowers was really cool. Many South Dakotans never see one in their whole life.
Ah, Monday morning means a new SP video, and a good one it is. Slim, you got skills way beyond RU-vid, but please....don’t ever go network commercial on us.
I've read all the replies up to this point. Thanks to your artful video, I've learned enough about Hugh Glass to go to the library to check out the book, The Revenant, which I'm looking forward to reading. I was somewhat surprised to see you still have & are using the Jeep. I thought you were thinking of getting something else & replacing it. I'm going to try to track down & buy one of those 12V Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
You definitely have a flair for the dramatic with that reenactment!! What a story! Nice contrast to your 21 century camping with many comforts of home. Well done. Your cinematic & narrative talents are notable. Beautiful place. Thanks for sharing...loved the stove!! Glad you had the place all to yourself!!
Very well done Slim ! I really enjoyed the story, the scenery and the video. Have camped in the Badlands- but will do Hugh Glass next time I get to SD. Thank You !
You mentioned a smaller cage for the stove pellets during not so cold weather. Maybe you could modify them to be interchangeable. Or here is a thought, several different sizes of small iron, brick or ceramic blocks to put directly in the cage to reduce its capacity, that might be an easier and better idea, and they would probably fit inside your stove during storage.
... that was a very enjoyable video, Slim... Thanks to you Hugh & history... in a GOOD week, i maybe could make the 1 mile marker, before i died. ; )... the truth is, i should cut that by 2/3s... lol.. stay safe & healthy. See ya down the road & Thanks again for the video. ; )
Slim, love your super trick ammo can stove set up. We use a wood fired ammo can stove built into our 10 ft. home built canned ham. It like yours produces so much heat that we had to put in a large adjustable vent. Again your videos are excellent on many levels.
Thank you ! for adding American History into your productions.. Your travels have been watched and some have learned about our fore-fathers that have paved the way to this great country ! Great Work ! L.W.
Great video. It makes me want to visit South Dakota. Your videos remind me of the Travelogue movies schools and churches rented and showed to the community when I was growing up. It’s a wonderful way to inspire more people to travel and explore.
Excellent video here Slim!I loved the Revenant seen it twice on the big screen...But it was very close to older film called"Man in the Wilderness"I loved that one too both are alike in some ways...Happy Fouth of July holiday!
A super educational video, Slim; I really appreciate it. Lovely hearing the story of Hugh Glass; indeed, what a survivor -- 190 miles, 6 weeks, with a broken leg and severe bites! Wowwww. Y'all Be Safe!
