The site 66 shows it connects with the C&O towpath. Not sure how steeper accessible yet. I noticed the trail from thd C&O and saw that the C&O Explorer map app refers to the connection to Outdoors Club Rd (as the map shows). New to me.
dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Pages/publiclands/western_greenridgeforest.aspx go there for more info. There are 100 sites and you have to stop at headquarters to sign in and pick a site. Some sites are better than others so it pays to know some of the better ones. Most sites are well away from other sites but some are on the 'road'. Most 'roads' are dirt tracks and some are labeled 4x4 only, and for a reason! You can get a site on a ridge top or down in a valley, you can be close to the potomac or pretty darn far away. You may have a creek or hiking trail nearby or you may not. One thing you won't have is a lot of close by neighbors as most sites aren't really even within sght of each other and some aren't even within hearing distance of another. Thanks and check out some of my other stie reviews. Someday I'll catalog many more of them.
DeafDalmatian thank you for the link! I wish there was a video of the trail and campsites altogether. This is going to be my first ever camping and I chose dispersed rather than campgrounds because I don't want any neighbors or noises. I just wanna hear nature and wildlife. I'm planning to hike and camp at the red trail, I've read that this is the most difficult among the trails.
Rules for camping on the trails is different of course. dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Documents/GRSF_map.pdf That map is about as good as it gets. If you go to headquarters when they are open they will give you a much larger one! Be aware that sometimes along the red the traffic noise from the highway can bleed over, well it does to campsites 77 and 78 so I assume so on the red trail. Still a beautiful area.
DeafDalmatian I have this on hand already. But I'll go ahead and get the much larger one at the headquarters for easier reading. Would you recommend the red trail for hikers with dogs?
I haven't hiked the whole red trail so can't say. Oh and this is VERY far from hdqrts and takes quite a while to get to in comparison to other sites. But it is a wonderful site that has options for hiking up two different valleys or going down the c&o towpath and hiking over or through or both the paw paw tunnel. Happy trails.
It used to be a better site until this past winter the whole circle was the camping pad you had room for large groups and the was only small path to river .Bridge was not there now it's just a parking lot for river access
