This hilariously campy 1960s educational film, SEE A JOB, subtitled WHAT'S A NICE GIRL LIKE YOU DOING WAY UP HERE WHEN THE GROUND'S WAY DOWN THERE, tells the story of Elaine Vaughn, an African-American Pan Am airline stewardess. With a cast of characters including a "swinger in seat 5B" (1:28 mark), this is one film not to be missed!
As the film states, Vaughn was a high school graduate who became one of Pan Am's elite stewardesses, flying the NY to Paris and NY to Rome routes. We wonder what became of her!
Includes footage in a 1960s airport at the 4:45 mark, great in-flight service with champagne at the 9:45 mark, and a jazzy score throughout.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. When I first took an international flight in 1966, this is pretty much what it was like. I don't remember table cloths (I was in coach) but there was no plastic tableware and no paper napkins. The covers on the headrests were changed for each passenger, the blankets were freshly cleaned and the pillowcases were changed after each use. Stewardesses handed-out magazines and newspapers -- the newspapers had not been used by other passengers. They gave out slippers after take-off and hot towels just before landing. They would bring drinks and snacks whenever you pushed the call button.

Quite an elaborate service for a 28 minute flight from MIA to NAS lol...love how the 727 morphed into a 707 after pushback too :P. Seriously, great retro post...thank you for posting :)

Not to mention the DC-8 seats (reading lamps on headrests) for Boeing jets. Darkness outside windows for a flight that left at 12N. As well as, galley scene which is obviously a cabin trainer. Still, great flash of the past.

My parents divorced in the mid-80s and lived in different cities. Every other weekend, I had to get on a plane as a kid to fly to see my father and back again. The flight attendants would come around and hand out drinks and peanuts. Then they would come through and hand out a hot meal. Then they would come through and refill drinks. Then they would collect all the trash. Not bad for a 50 minute flight! Can you imagine that today?! 😮

Wow, they really took care of their First Class passengers, "back in the day!" Eye of prime rib, carved on the cart at your side? Posh! I will say, they still take good care of you in Business Class, but not up to that level. And those cute, slim, young stewardesses ... ah, those were the days. (Especially for the Designated Swinger, and most especially for the Business Traveler she's dancing with after the end of the flight.)

I wish flights were like this now. Damn TSA with their hands all over you and your stuff, airline seats that are so squished and tiny, only soda and maybe some nuts.
@nicholasramsey5331
@nicholasramsey5331 6 лет назад
I know! The seats in economy class are intolerably small and squished together! I for one don't require elaborate food and service, but they do need to give you more leg and arm room in economy class (especially on long, international flights)!

When I was a kid in the 60's, going to the airport was a big deal. People got dressed up to fly. The flight was almost as enjoyable as the vacation destination. Nowadays the food is awful, (in a plastic tray microwaved), the seats are uncomfortable, and everyone hates to fly.
@transitengineer
@transitengineer Год назад
Yes, I grew up in the 1960's too and remember flights around the USA. Kids always, got treated like we were special guests (i.e. given airline paying cards, taking up to the cockpit to visit with the flight crew, etc.). Now in my 60's, I still always fly wearing a business or church suit. Also, I get treated very well even as an African American male.

Thanks for posting. It was quite a refreshing revelation, given this little corporate promo film was made while MLK was still ALIVE ! I think PANAM was going through a policy and image change after charges of discrimination in employment and customer service. Even the great Ella Fitizgerald encountered problems on a flight to Australia. The only part made me cringe a bit was seeing our sister play "wet nurse" to the Ms. Becky's baby.. Was that part of her job, really...?

Hey, you can't go on a date with a passenger! You might fall in love, get married, and quit working for us! And thank you for not engaging in bulimic purging on camera, another requirement for working for PanAm. Remember, girls, you'll get weighed weekly, and if you're just one pound over the limit...stewardess no more!
@theboyintheair
@theboyintheair 8 лет назад
That's not exactly how it was. If you were over your personal weight limit, you'd be given a set amount of time to lose it in and then if you were still carrying the weight after the deadline, you'd be put on desk duty. It's not like you got sacked for eating an extra cupcake at lunch. The weight limit was essentially the 60's equivalent of the modern personal BMI, which is what you should weigh anyway.
