I don't think it is a proprietary battery. That size is called 18650. I use them in my flashlights and they are 3000mAh which is pretty close to the specs that CR publishes for their battery.
I bought one plus the motorized remote mount for my Nikon...it arrives in two days...I imagine you just saved me much frustration...thank you very much...
If i am not wrong, the 5GHz is a faster signal that is meant for shorter distance, while 2.4Ghz is a longer traveling signal. If it works like my router's signal and how my iphone/ipad connects to it, then the idea is that the ipad will automatically pick whichever signal is stronger. when it is near the camera, the 5GHz signal should be the one that gets picked up. and when you are far away, it should be the 2.4GHz signal.
Dennis Lim it appears that the 2.4 shows connection first and 5.8 a few seconds later. I will do some more research on which works better for what where and when.
Thanks for the review. The 2nd WiFi is 5.0. The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth. 5GHz provides faster data rates at a shorter distance. 2.4GHz offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds
Cool stuff Rich. Thanks for your initial review. It’s been a long wait for the CamRanger 2 and for all of us that shoot with a Sony. I’ll look forward to your future feedback on your experiences with the settings and speeding up your workflow.
Absolutely love mine, a lot faster than my original CamRanger, but for it's time it was amazing, awesome for product and realtor type stuff too, so over all right now I give it 5 stars.
On my original camranger I shoot Raw + small basic jpeg (Nikon D610). The reason for the small basic jpeg is only because it loads really fast to the tablet. I can review it and keep going. I don't know if that's faster than what you have here or not.
Thank you for this. Thank you for the time you put into it. A good honest review, and a down home "folksy" delivery with all the "flaws"...very well done noble sir....thank you...I do however submit you update you links...all are broken except for shooting spaces which at first glance appears to be nothing more that LR presets. Anyway, thank you again for taking the time and putting the energy into this review. It was very helpful.
With my current set up, I have my godox flash trigger (the flat one you hate) mounted on a small magic arm that I have clamped to the top of my tripod, that way I can have it at whatever angle or position I want. You could use a small magic arm for the Camranger 2, or as I currently do, just buy a longer cable and chuck the camranger in a small bag and hang that off the tripod, either way would work fine I think. The battery does look to be a Lithium-ion 18650, pretty common battery nowadays and cheap enough to buy, it does need the correct type of charger capable of charging Li-ions though, again, cheap enough to buy those. I'm still using a device which is the same hardware as the camranger 1 but using different software, qDSLdashboard on android and I'm able to control most of what my Nikon D800's can do. That hardware doesn't support the faster 5Ghz wifi, but I do have a newer wireless router that does and some people have hacked that firmware to enable it to work with the qDSLRdasboard software, but I've not bothered yet. Sending across just the small/basic jpegs for review is pretty fast and they are good enough I think to assess the shots. I like the memory card option on the camranger 2 though, Nikon Z6/7 shoots might appreciate that if the 5Ghz is fast enough for copying across RAW files as it would then give them the ability to have a back up on important shoots.
I screwed a small Arca Swiss Clamp on the CR2 and I can now firmly attach the device right to my L Bracket and its perfect!!! I can even shoot in Portrait orientation.
As always Rich, great review and video. I always appreciate your in depth videos. One option you may have for mounting that, is to go with the flatter, non pro version of the trigger, which has a hot shoe attachment on the top. Thanks again Rich, keep doing what you're doing.
John Harwood never ever ever!!! I even did a video how I hate the flat trigger cause I always need to bend over to see the screen. Forget that 😜 m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1ivJYiHczoo.html
Have you tried a different cable, such as something from tether tools to get a 90 degree attachment from/to your camera? I use 2 original camrangers, on my Canons. Way better than the cumbersome Canon Camera App.
Yes I have, I have tried just about everything.. I am no longer using Camranger as it's not a good fit for Sony.. If your Nikon or Canon your good to go.
If you are transferring RAW along with JPG it is going as quick as you could expect. The original CamRanger transfers JPGs at that speed. RAW files take 50+ seconds. Seems very similar to v1 except for Sony and Fuji support and a new app. I wish they would allow you to disable the video button right next to the Live View button. I have pushed the video button a number of times thinking I am hitting LV. Waste a bunch of card space on video. It hints at a Mac OS app that could be very useful in the studio if you could send files to the computer also.
Not sure you can answer this because it's regarding Nikon - I don't like using Live View on my Nikon, I prefer using the viewfinder. Do I have to use LiveView to wirelessly send the images to my tablet? Thanks.
i want to ask you some question if I may: 1. do we need to put sd card on both of camera and transmitter ? if the answer is no that means we can put card only on camera, so 2. if i only shot RAW, whats the output on the tablet?is it RAW or automatically becomes JPEG?
Did you have the previous Camranger? Could you not show the pinching in and out a bit more as this was missing on the first version, would have been nice to see. Looks like upload speeds are still slow which is also a worry. I'm not convinced by this review at all. And as for the size, it should be smaller not bigger! The hotshoe mount is no good if you're shooting with a pocket wizard on for example and the antenna will be awkward if carrying on your person when shooting. Don't get me wrong, I like Camranger but this 2nd version looks a bit disappointing a first look, I thought it would be much much quicker and smaller.
Does it save the photos to the SD card in camera? I have the cam pro and it only allows the photos to be saved to the device you are using (iPad,phone etc)..... love that this has all the settings unlocked and can be changed...
I’m sorry I’m not a Nikon shooter anymore but somehow I don’t think you can see live you and use the CamRanger because that’s kind of redundant as a CamRanger is live you
Some of the l brackets have multiple holes , for video rig building. I use one made by SmallRig for my Fuji XT-3 . They have a myriad of add-ons that are very useful for attaching stuff to the camera. You may even be able to find a "cage" for your camera if it is a popular video capable model. I got an original CR1 back in '07-'08. and it was marvelous on my Nikon D300 and I am interested to see if they have done it again. BTW , does the camera lcd screen remain on full time ? Could mean lugging more batts around if it does.
Does anyone know where to find a tutorial on connecting the CAMRANGER 2 to a SONYA7RIII???? Having a nightmare with mine. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
You can try forcing the USB Connection as PC Remote over Auto (on the mark IV that's in a separate menu). That helped connect a couple of times, but now I just get an error saying connection to CamRanger lost. Perhaps this is a problem with 13.1?
I screwed on a small Really Right Stuff Clamp and now I can firmly and quickly attach the CR2 right to my L Bracket!!! Works great and I can even shoot in Portrait orientation.
I ended up going to my local Ace hardware and purchasing a spring clamp (1" - 1-1/4") that snaps nicely over one of the upper tripod legs. It's the same type of clamp you would use to hold a broom handle or yard tool to a wall. Then drilled the hole in it 1/4" (hole was too small). Also purchased a short 1/4 - 20 hex head screw to attach the clamp to the Camranger. Now if someone could just tell me how to hold a reflector in one hand and balance the iPad in the other and hit the shutter button. After about three shots yesterday I gave up until I find an easier way.
Oh... also ordered a 20" USB cable from B&H. The short one you get with the CR2 is pretty useless. Too inflexible and will probably not reach the CR2 even if stacking on another hot shoe device.
Awesome video Rich! I was going to ask about the histogram, but I see someone else asked that. :) Do you know if this is compatible with the PT Hub and pan/tilt head? I suppose I could look that up though too. I assume you can use this on multiple cameras (Sony and Canon) as long as you have the correct cable?
Thanks for nice video Rich. I'm using CamRanger for many years now, and I love it! But I feel CamRanger 2 is actually not upgrade neither downgrade but its expensive for sure. I was looking forward to get hands on it but on second thought I'll pass it. Here are my arguments: 1. Old CamRanger was quite smaller, with no antennas and decent range 2. Old App is more user friendly and intuitive than this one. Options are all over the UI. Quite disappointing solution. 3. Price is almost double for CamRanger 2 but improvements are quite slim. I feel like we have to pay more for size and nothing else 3. Mounting is still not solved properly.... Funny thing is when photographers connect CamRanger 2 everyone was like "OK I'll put it somewhere". I had issues with CR1 which was in nice small pouch but now this one is much bigger and has antennas. It's like brick. This is for example Dave's explanation for hot-shoe.: "We considered it and decided against it. In part because we found that photographers have very strong opinions about how they want their equipment. For, example, you have a very strong opinion that you want a transferred hot shoe. There are many that feel very strongly that they do not want anything else on their hot shoe. Many want it on an L-bracket, or a tripod clamp, or hanging from a pouch, and we’ve even received complaints that they can’t as easily shoot with the new CamRanger in their pocket." I'm sorry that Dave has this opinion, but I really don't see how hot shoe mount would affect any of those requirements from the others what he had mentioned. Even though this mount what is in the box is cheapest and most non convenient on the market. I was looking forward for CR 2 but seems like thrown money especially for Canon or Nikon users who already owns CR 1. Cheers!
Hi Rich, thanks for the great review! I have used a dual hot shoe flash bracket splitter to attach my Godox XPro Transmitter and an external monitor. This might be an option to attach the CamRanger 2.
I screwed a small Arca Swiss Clamp on the CR2 and I can now firmly attach the device right to my L Bracket and its perfect!!! I can even shoot in Portrait orientation.
Hello RICH, I am writing to you from France, apologize for my poor English, I am going through Google translation... I have a quick question: Can the interface of the Camranger 2 software be in French language? Wishing to do Focus Stacking with my Canon 5D4, do you find this Camranger 2 box practical and recommend it? Thank you for your answer and your video! Friendly Pascal.
I enjoyed the video. I noticed that you didn't talk about installing and using the SD card. I'm having trouble getting the pictures to transfer from my A7 3. It works fine with the Canon 5D3. When I hook up my Sony it recognizes the camera but puts up an on screen message that there isn't an SD card even though I have one installed. I can see the live view and even use the app to take a picture. But it won't transfer the picture to the iPad for viewing. Any suggestions?
One more comment on mounting the Camranger 2 - I use a SmallRig cage. It has all the screw holes and Cold Shoe you will need to mount it anywhere you like.
I screwed a small Arca Swiss Clamp on the CR2 and I can now firmly attach the device right to my L Bracket and its perfect!!! I can even shoot in Portrait orientation.
Up till this very moment, my setup involves me putting my a7Riii in a cage, with the cold shoe mount on the cage being allocated to a Photix Wireless Trigger. Then i add an additional wooden hand grip with a cold shoe on top, so that i can add a 7 inch Aputure Screen - for clients to see the shot better. I did not use Sony's app because it was too slow. Do i really need all these excessive stuff? No. But i get many compliments from clients saying how professional it looks with all the bulk and wires sticking out everywhere. So all these is really "customer service" Now that Camranger 2 is out.... hohoho.... can do better customer service with lesser stuff! Happiness.
Nice video Rich, thanks very much. I was looking into CamRanger 2 to use with my new A7R4 and A9, because the crappy Sony App Imaging Edge doesn’t even allow you to focus the camera with your iPhone screen. Do you think that Cam Ranger 1 will work with these new Sony cameras? I have that and paid $300 for it.
Thank you for this First Look? Which body are you using? A7RIV? A friend of mine told me you cannot tap it and change the focus point with the Sony a9 as shown here at 8:20. I wonder why?
Hey Rich, having LOTS of issues connecting my CAMRANGER 2 with my Sony A7RIII. Does the SD Card slot in the CAMRANGER mean I can't transfer the images onto my dual card slots in the Sony??
at 9:00 regarding being able to directly select options in the Sony app. You actually can. You can use the arrows left or right to increase SS/Fstop/ISO OR you can tap ON the number itself and then drag the slider to the exact number you want. So if your ISO is at 320 and you want to drop it to 100 for a window pull, touch 320 then drag the slider to 100. Done! This works for all 3 exposure settings. The Sony app certainly has its flaws, but this isn't one of them. IMO.
flyhighx I know that but I’ve never liked how the Sony app works. I love having all the options right in front of me so I can pick the exact setting I want and not needing to go through all the settings.
@@RichBaum Believe me, I'm not crazy about the Sony app either. I will be watching this to see if the bugs get worked out. That 4 second delay is a killer! Fingers crossed.
Watch my latest video showing you how it's a 1.5 second review now that I picked a smaller jpg and used a fast SD card in the camera.. It's lightning fast
@@RichBaum the battery 🔋 that came with the camranger has a clear plastic rapped around the battery. I don't know if I should remove it 🤔. It's long and sticks out when I put it in the camranger. . This is the camranger rechargeable battery
Thanks for this Video Rich. I was just wondering if you normally use back button focus and wether it needs switching off in order to use the CamRanger 2 for focussing.
I always used back button focus and didn't have to switch it off for focusing on CamRanger 1. I'm about to order CR2 and assuming that part is the same
I ordered the CamRanger 2 to use it with my Fuji GFX 50s.To set the item was very easy, but the product is not functioning properly from the first moment.I contacted the CamRanger support and got the feeling that the people at the CamRanger have not service orientated people. The product is working with my second camera Sony A7R3 but I didn't buy it to use with Sony.So it is very annoying to buy an expensive product but not enjoy with it even one second.I am very disappointed especially from the after sell services.
Hi Rich, thanks for sharing this preview. I really hope there’s now a virtual horizon in the Camranger2 app for Nikon. Do you know if this is the case, or could you find out? Thanks a lot.
@@RichBaum Oh ok I get it, you didn't understood what I said, I said I saw that you have the Godox XPro trigger, so if you buy the other model which is the Godox X2T instead, you will be able to slide the Camranger over it. Check the pic. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0237/4685/products/Strobepro_Godox_x2t_canon_x2t-c_X2TC_10_2000x.jpg?v=1562655233
Hey Rich. I use the Canon Camera Connect app, but the problem I have with that is I cannot control an external flash from the app (like I can from within the camera menus). Does the CamRanger2 have any controls for external flash?
In the beginning of the video you said you got it set up with some frustration but you didn't talk about what that frustration was. Can younexpand on rhis? Was it connecting to WiFi like camranger 1? Thanks for the review
Brandon LaFond I think the ability to set AF point by taping the iPad screen will be one of my favorite features. I don’t see why it won’t work with your MK2
@@RichBaum Thanks for your reply and all of the work you do for us, Rich. I'm assuming it would only respond to the limited area of AF points on an old camera like mine.
I just got my CamRanger 2 today and it's a total fail. When you mount it on the cameras hot shoe, it sticks out past the viewfinder. I can't press my eye up to the evf on any of my cameras. On a Nikon Z7 is sticks out 1/4" past the viewfinder. On a Fuji GFX 50s it sits even with the viewfinder, but my forehead still touches it.. Didn't anyone at CamRanger test this for usability?
@@RichBaum Hi Rich, I'm 99% sure that's the same battery the Moza Air gimbals are using. ( Moza Air 2 uses 4 of those ) Nice batteries. I hope you do a bunch more of these Cam Ranger 2 tutorials, and please explain why the cable is connected to the camera, I'm guessing this is for faster signal transfer than over WiFi.
CamRanger will do brackets in a huge range of steps from 3 to about 9 IIRC. You can make the steps in 1/3 stop increments up to 3 stops. Can't remember exactly as the app is not in front of me and I never use more than 5 frame brackets or 1 2/3 stop increments.
