For viewers who aren't necessarily real estate photographers, I'd like to mention a few things. We got a CR2 unit less than a month ago at my studio and are happy with it. Our usage is mostly to review images on-site with clients during a shoot, and to remotely trigger the camera. Sometimes we use live view but that's rare. So, for our usage, it's great and definitely a worthwhile improvement over CR1. You can pinch to zoom now! That drove us crazy. As Rich says, you do need to make sure you have it configured correctly for your camera and workflow, and that might take you a few shoots to figure out. Really the only issue for us is the unit's design. The shape/size is a little weird (couldn't the antennas be internal?), but by far the biggest issue is the USB being on the side, as Rich says in the video. Just figuring out how to hold it while you shoot is annoying and we haven't found an elegant solution yet. Oh, also it drains your camera battery way faster. Have extra batteries ready. For me though, the pro's definitely outweigh the cons.
Camranger 2 has served me very well on my Cannon 5d and 6d models. Rich Baum, Is the kindest coach if you ever need one. He is so relaxed, calm and positive. I've completed several coaching sessions with this top notch photographer/guy!
CamRanger really ought to make separate videos to show optimized usage for astro-photography, and a video for optimized usage for portraits, and an optimized usage for real estate, etc. It's crazy to be relying on word of mouth for a device as versatile and complex as the CamRanger is.
@@RichBaum That's usually a result of smart people without a budget. Just saying... they're probably better with GHz than marketing. :) Rich, you wanna tag team on something like this give me a shout. I'm in Sac.
Every Video you post is spot on, pure gold to a young real estate photographer like myself trying to grow their business. Anyone watching this, SERIOUSLY check out Rich Baum's Channel. If you've got a question, he probably has a video answering that question. Not only answering but breaking down each step, giving you a full and complete understanding of the specific topic. Thanks Rich!
I was hoping for better results and waited for the updates. Did 2 shoots the other day after practicing at home with the CR2, struggled the whole time. I wish I would have returned it before the 30 days, going to sell mine and take the loss I guess.
Hi Rich! Thanks for the review! You just saved me a bunch of money by not replacing our three CamRanger 1 devices currently in service. As a long time CR user I was hoping the new CR2 would be a more significant improvement over the original model that could justify the expense. However, it appears not. It seems that Dave continues down a stubborn path of feeling he knows best and not caring how users feel about his product or working to accommodate our needs. After frustrating attempts to communicate and work with CamRanger support with issues over time, I have abandoned trying to work with them and have learned to just live with and work around the deficiencies of the product. But I certainly will not grace them with hard earned dollars purchasing high priced new devices to continue dealing with these kinds of glaring issues and lack of service. We need products that improve our work flow, not impede it. Until they demonstrate a change of course and work out these bugs I will stick with my existing devices or find another tether solution.
Rich, have you considered a teather cable? For indoor you could use a short cable and hang the iPad on the tripod. For outdoor use the long teather cable (they have an attachment thing to keep it from pulling out of the camera). Just wondering if this might be workable and cheaper?? Thx
It’s not enough to just have a trigger cable but you need the ability to change settings and trigger remotely. I’m currently using the Sony built in WiFi and Imaging Edge app And it’s great.
Canon 5D Mk IV using CamRanger Mini I found using card 1 on jpg S3 and setting playback to card 1, I get an image on my iPhone in less than a second. The raw files are sent to card 2 which I use for processing.
I have been using the Camranger 2 with a Canon 5D Mark IV. This is my first experience with shooting tethered. I never really tried the Canon Connect app after hearing mostly negative comments. It took me a few shoots to get accustomed to the flow, but now I would feel lost without tethering. I have not had any connection issues. However, I agree completely on the design. Really am not a fan of the USB port on the side. I hang the CR in a pouch off of the tripod. Also, having to manually go back to live view after every shot is a real PIA. Battery cover/door is also poorly designed. As for start-up time, yes, it takes a while. I usually turn it on first thing once I am on site. Finally, I understand not wanting the device to turn off instantly if you hit the power button, but having to hold it in for what seems to be forever to turn it off is overkill.
I need to correct myself... you do NOT have to hold the power button in until the CR shuts down. Once the red light appears, which is fairly quick, you can release the button. Sorry.
Hello Rich , you and I are 100% on the same page. I am a real estate photographer as well. The Cam Ranger actually SLOWS ME DOWN, even having to run back and forth to view my images , doing the old fashion way , I still DO MY SHOOT FASTER !! That is definitively the sign that signs the verdict . 😔. I want to give it one more chance to see if I can make it work for me. This is an Item that costs close to $400.00 , no chump change. I use Fuji . Like you , I am waiting for better firmware. Any updates since you posted this video ?
Hey Rich, its been a while. Are you still using cheap WiFi repeaters like me? I seem to break one or two a week and I’m thinking of moving to CamRanger 2. I keep thinking there will be a hack for the old CamRanger but no luck. Do you know if CamRanger has fixed any of the early issue with firmware? Just wish there was a clean and reliable solution for sony.
I had camranger 1, worked very well in volume photography like a dance school. I had canon. Now I have sony and just got this new system. Seems like for me this will work well as I put it together yesterday and it worked well for what I do. The old system, was good, but as I used it, It messed up my in camera imput, then it was getting very spotty on connection. But I used it for years and it saved me a ton of time. Now I hope CamRanger 2 can do the same. Thanks for the videos, I wish there were more.
mirza kudic now we got to get Sony to use the same improvement for the a7III 😜 Seriously I can’t believe it’s a hardware thing and most likely a firmware update but that’s just my speculation.
Rich Baum I’ll most likely buy the a7iii as well because 61mp is a HUGE OVERKILL for real estate. But I do have a gallery in downtown so I actually do need the megapixels for all my large metal prints
I'm shooting with a Nikon d750. The efficiency of the app works well so far. I have to work with it more to fine tune my work flow and app tweaks though. My issue is the opposite of yours in that my playback review time is still too long at 3-4 seconds. I've read some possible solutions but they haven't worked for me so far... The camera set up for Nikon is minimal so not an issue for me. It looks more complicated for the Sony units for sure.
Dace Voit be sure to set your file size to RAW + smallest JPEG possible. And use as gas a card as you can in the camera and CamRanger. Most important a fast card in camera. Faster than 95mbs
@@RichBaum Thanks for the tips. I have tried the RAW + JPEG but the speed was the same. I don't use a card in the Camranger since the d750 has dual SD slots. The SD cards I'm using are 95mbps. Is that the line or is 95 too slow?
@@dacevoit1809 We've been shooting with the "quick RAW" option instead of using the small jpg transfer (like with CR1) and it's been fast, maybe even faster than the jpg option.
Unfortunately no changes as far as I’m concerned, a few months ago I tried going back to using it and it was just such a pain in the ass that I’ve given up I will be selling my CamRanger2 probably shortly
@@RichBaum are you just using the Sony Image Edge app? I use it for my interior designer clients but it looses connection when I go to preview images on my camera. What are your recommended setting for using the Sony app? Do you have any?
I tried using the CamRanger again a few months ago but I found it to be so difficult and yes the time delay going from one Schroeder Speed to another is unacceptable so I’ve pretty much given up on CamRanger
Tim K. I think I made it clear there really was no advantage at least for me. I think the CR2 will be great when they deal with all issues. Trust me I wanted the CR2 to live up to my expectations but unfortunately so far it’s been a Pain in my A@&S
I have a Canon 5D Mk IV. If I connect this to my camera is the cable compatible to the 5D Mk IV connector because all camera connectors are not the same.
I have the original CamRanger which I use on a Nikon camera. My biggest problem is that I can't use the camera's light meter (or at least I can't figure out how) while I'm tethered to the device. Does the new model fix that?
@@RichBaum thanks for the reply, love your videos. Do you think you'll be able to start doing your work shops again? I would really like to attend one.
Thanks for the review. I am a heavy user of the original CamRanger but always need an assistant when light painting. As soon as I am more than 20-25 feet from the device I lose the connection. So I always work with an assistant sitting near the camera with the command Open and Close for the shutter. It is very frustrating. The further away you get the longer it takes to get an image too. I am a Canon Shooter. Oh, and I hate the Canon WiFi app. I much prefer the CamRanger. It does not sound like the 2 is there yet for prime time. Is Dave taking your input to improve the Sony experience?
Jerry Keefer I’ve tried giving my input to Dave but I think he feels everyone is loving it except me so I’m pretty much done dealing with him. I can only imaging he’s getting slammed with questions and unhappy users but he said to me everyone he talks to is having great results. So maybe it’s just me 😜
Rich Baum you would think with an audience as large as yours well ya know. I’m still using the hell out of my CamRanger 1 I just always need to have an assistant. By the way you would love to learn my light painting. There are many similarities to what you do.
Hi Rich. Thanks for your video. Merry Chrisman and happy new year. You say that the changing of shutter speed is very slow (i have the same problem with qdslr dashboard that i use to tether A7R2 to Macbook). Is it very slow, when you change speed in App, or when you change speed in camera? Still hoping that you will review the tethertools Air Direct.
I agree it's crazy stupid... I will be getting the Air Direct next week and will do a video ASAP.. Hope it's better but the SS issue might just be a Sony thing and there is no way around it..
Rich, can I ask you about the amber light thats supposed to go out when the battery is fully charged. The software shows me the battery is fully charged, but the amber light never goes out when I charge the battery while inside the unit using a usb charge cable.
how are u able to use the sony playmemory app with the a7iii? it's been discontinued. Or are you referring to the sony imaging edge app? the problem with that app is there is no way to control the focus point with the app. the camranger2 does have that option which is why i am looking into it
The new Sony app is called image edge and it works just like the old play memories app, you just need to go through the steps to update your system to work with what you have and the new app, it was a bit of a challenge for me to figure this out but eventually I was able to make it work and I’m so happy I did because everything is working great now with my older Sony a 6000 and my iPad mini version 2
Whatever happened to Rich ? .... he's been gone forever. 4 months without any videos. Hi Rich ! come on... we all want to see you, even if it's just to say hello 👍😁
Hello Rich, Thank your for the review! I have my new CamRanger 2 in my hot little hands. I followed all the directions to hook it up to the device. I opened the app on my Ipad and it says the camera isn't connected. When I was reading the troubleshooting it mentioned that the wifi needs to be turned off on my a7iii. My question is, how do I do that? Thank you!
Real Estate Shots by Michele sorry but I don’t have my camera near me. I’m sure you can find the answer in the CamRanger Facebook group or send them a question
I have the XT3 as well and even though the features work well, it slows me down, the time I have to wait for the preview, the time it takes to change the shutter speed. I do everything way faster right on camera. I hope they fix that issue !!
Wow! I’ve been meaning to switch from Canon 5D to Sony A7riii for awhile. I used CR1 for years with Canon and loved it, the app everything. Can’t believe they got rid of the hanging ouch, the vertical usb, and the battery position. Perhaps you could get a mini super clamp to clamp to tripod leg with longer usb chord to eliminate arca Swiss head use age. Does it still allow to shoot to cam ranger and auto share to laptop for client viewing? Huge for arch shooters like us. Not sure if I’d buy this after hearing this overview and go straight with Sony PlayMemories app. Thanks Rick! (Ps: keep doing these outside, love the fall colors we don’t get down in LA)
@@RichBaum hey can you message me why? I'm thinking of using it more but will have to purchase an L bracket and a few accessories to make it work. I appreciate the feedback.
Rich I used to import tethered into Lightroom, but since switching to sony I had to change to Capture one. Can you use the Camranger and still import into either of those programs?
Gord W I don’t have a Canadian link but I’m confident it’s easy to fine so I would copy the name of the router and put it into Amazon in Canada, that’s what I would do
@@RichBaum Totally useless on Sony SLT-A99, SLT-A77 & SLT-A77 II. Anyone that you know will work on above cameras with live-view, Rich Baum? Sony kills the Sony A-mount system and not telling, like Olympus 4/3 and Samsung NX. ATG says Sony is hurting very badly, then come Canon and Nikon due to slump in photography for years.
Matthew Heritage Thank you for your reply, I tried to be very fair and I certainly gave it time to sink in but unfortunately it was just not a good fit for me and how I work
Thanks for the review Rich. I am finding CamRanger 2 to be a "problematic beast." It frequently, and I mean FREQUENTLY, looses connection to the App (I use an iPad Pro Mini). I found out that you shouldn't even think of getting a connection if you are running a VPN on your tablet (so much for security). And, even without VPN that thing is still cantankerous! Let me tell ya, trying to get a good connection for an exterior pole shot in Minnesota winter below-zero weather is NO TREAT. CamRanger would be sooo much more helpful if it connected to the App reliably. My two cents (actually, I paid a lot more than that for such a pain in the neck!). LoL
Sorry to hear your issues. I haven’t used my CamRanger for the past year. It doesn’t work well with Sony. Some might be happy but personally I was extremely disappointed with my Sony cameras.
Tony, I’m sorry it doesn’t fit your view of what video should be, but it is just the way I do things and I hope that’s OK but most of my subscribers are fine with what I do
