Eric Weingartner, I couldn't agree more. Daniel Powell is a super nice guy. Very knowledgeable and helpful and he doesn't mind answering questions and sharing knowledge.
@@powellmachineinchey I just watch one of your videos not to long ago before the camshaft channel and just recently subscribed and man I already learned quite a few things on a channel so thank you for sharing your knowledge it was interesting I found your channel popped up and was very cool
I watch Daniel Powell too , another no bs channel. Love what you do on your channel. Will you ever make a shirt with "I don't port cast iron heads" on it
I am a Canadian and I watch Powells videos just to listen to him talk. I wouldn't want to piss him off too much as I believe he could snap you in half without breaking a sweat! He is very head strong and doesn't like to be criticized. I guess when you learn from your own experience, you want to protect that. I also like Brent Lykins and hope he wins. A Ford geneous, designing a cam for a GM engine should be Interesting. Thanks, Eric for making this happen. It takes our minds off of Politics for a while.
I’m a back yard mechanic. I told my engine builder what I’m using the car for and brakes and sound. He chose the cam. It was basically what I would have picked. Maybe touch more radical.
That's exactly what I was thinking. This is just the beginning. I just hope Vizard gets his cam there in time. I think this all started as a head butting contest between Eric and David. Eric came up with a cool way to settle it.
Daniel Powell had no problem jumping into my lonney toone build of a briggs and stratton as the lightest most powerful 4 stroke engine ever made for ultralight aircraft, over the summer he agreed and rebalanced my crankshaft for a highly modified briggs prototype
First, you and Daniel Powell are straight shooters. I'm sure their are more. Second I really appreciate sumitt racing staying privately owned. I've have been fortunate to meet some legends in the automotive racing world all that i have met have been extremely generous and real good people. Only a few were not so generous or good people. So thanks to all that are.
"I'm about as nervous as a whore in church" "Nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs" "Happier than a puppy with 2 peters" "Drunk as Cooter Brown" "Finer than frog's hair" "Longer than a month of Sundays" "Nuttier than a pecan log" I'm pulling for Powell, btw.
I'm from Texas and have a pretty serious southern drawl. I say I talk like cornbread. I'm a big fan of Daniel's channel, and this one too! This cam challenge is genius.
We choose our cams on timing events that produce the best static compression ratio for the intended application. Like NA, Boosted, Roots Blown, Nitrous etc.
Daniel Powell is a very personable character. I have spoken with him at length. He is a wealth of knowledge, is down to earth, loves his wife 👍, and is a true Southerner. He seems to love his work and what he does... Like any man in his shoes, his struggle will always be the limited amount of time he has to do what he wants to do. He is very busy. Aren't we all?! Yes, us northern boys have an appreciation for the South. I have always loved all the different accents, from Texas, to Georgia to S. Carolina.
Gerald Brand is a great guy, very knowledgeable. 👍👍Daniel is a great guy.👍👍 I watched the whole video. 👍 It's fixin to come a gully washing! 🙂 Good video Eric.👍👍
The ramp on a camshafts lobe is only three skeeter legs long! That must be a manly beard or something horrible went wrong with a mullet 180 degrees catty corner. This crankshaft is messed up it will make more noise than a cow pissing on a flat rock. I truly enjoy listening to Daniel explain his thoughts on machining and the last two are my sayings, like small is fly poop on a pepper flake. Thank you kindly.
Here's my question. How do you determine or plan what a valvetrain can take for RPM? Is there a formula with weight or something? Say you want to spin 7,500... how do you pick components? Whats your thought process? Thanks!
I'm just wondering could you do a "Leak Down" on the motor @ the Start then the Finish? I kind of think it might wear itself out .....Just thinking strange thoughts here.....I'm a weird guy! I once spent 10 hours porting a set of Corvette "Rams Horn" exhaust manifolds to make a "Stock Appearing" Corvette run mid 12's through the factory exhaust system.....😁
Powell is a heck of a nice guy. I bought stuff from him online before i ever knew who he was and what he did. He doesn't care to actually answer a question. Most builders, if you're not shelling out a bunch of money to them won't give you the time of day. Now im not says just bombard him with questions, but on a RU-vid video, he doesn't mind to answer you.
I’d like to know how much power a 3” collector can support. This would be for a 1 7/8 “ primary for a stroker small block Ford Cleveland. Just wondering when you need to step up to a 3 1/2” collector and bigger primary. 2” is common for Cleveland’s.
Powell has one hell of a heavy southern drawl to the point when I've watched his videos I have a hard time not fixating on it thinking wow that's heavy vs listening to what he's saying. Prob kinda hypocritical when I'm from Maine and as much as I don't think I do I prob have a heavy Maine accent but when I'm talking to certain people I make a point to pronounce my words well n not to sound like a n ol local hick.
I made it to the end! You don’t port cast iron heads! Yes, I subscribe to both yours and Daniel Powell’s channel and he is DEFINITELY a cool dude who knows his stuff!👍🏻 As a matter of fact, I’m planning on contacting him for my next camshaft. And btw- I’ve said it before, but this camshaft challenge is great, so thanks for doing this HUGE undertaking, and yes- I donated.👍🏻
Big fan of Daniel Powell as well.. question how well do you think the promaxx cnc 340cc heads milled to 110cc perform on a 489 with -18 cc pistons? I know they are oversized but low lift numbers look good. Lookin for 700 streetable hp. Big fan of the channel by the way
I got one for you, "I known him since he was shitin yella" #weingartnergotamancrush It's all good bro, it happens! 🤣 My wife has a woman crush on Shakira ! (Who doesn't) Lol
Its great that you are doing a little blurb on each competitor, its very interesting to learn a little bit about each person and if they have a U-tube channel, chances are they will get a boost in viewers. My question (which I think you may have covered in another video, sorry if you have) is it just a myth that running bigger-port heads than theoretically ideal results in a drop in mid-range torque due to a lower intake-charge velocity. Thanks for the great content!
I am the son of a Kentucky truck driver and I have forgotten hundreds of sayings more then I will ever remember. I really appreciate hearing new ones too
TRICK FLOW SMALL BLOCK MOPAR heads. I just bought a set. I was wondering if you ported the set you did a review on. And if so, what gains did you see. I appreciate the all the great info. Take care.
Regarding the process that people use to spec out a cam, just a few observations from someone at the enthusiast level. 1) Folks who have the equipment/contacts to design and test that design tend toward the events/hybrid approach. 2) I think Vizard developed the "formula" for people like me to get as close to what I want (not necessarily optimal) as possible without spending more than an off-the-shelf price. 3) People get in arguments about process because that is how they were trained or how things make sense to them the easiest way and get all blustery when challenged. I also have a question or two for the event timing guys. 1) What factors determine the events for you? 2) What is the least amount of info needed to get a good cam event profile?
great question Get Rick Jones Controlled induction free program or another similar, Vizard has a great checklist Start with head flows from yours or the vendor or from the head flow website and work backward from the valve events through the rocker to the cam you also have to pick your lobe and play with events vs lobe vs application and maintenance etc
My question to you sir is which would you prefer and why, a small chamber with a dish piston or a large chamber with a flat top piston both at the same 11.4 compression in a wedge head street engine on 93 pump gas? Looking forward to the cam challenge.
Great info love the channel. I have a question How do you learn where the cam events should be? Any books or software? I have read lots of stuff and have watched lots of videos and I understand how it all works but I just cant seem to figure out how you calculate the exact degree for the events to accomplish the goal. Hope you get what I am saying. A post above said something about Vizard having a formula and being the only one and Powell replied he's not the only one so where do you learn these formulas. I want know how to calculate the cam events for any engine. I get that its probably a close guarded secret but any help you can give for how to do it I would love to hear.
Hi Eric Have you ever ported a set of V8 AMC heads ? Both Edelbrock and Indy have aluminum ones for AMC If you haven't ported any would you be open to it ? Greetings from Iceland
Question: When porting a n/a cylinder head for a limited intake valve lift application. Like performance street or endurance racing. How do you determine the CSA relationship between the curtain area and these other key areas of the intake port. " Throat%, bowl%, and pinch or minimum csa. Say.... 2.08" valve with .550" net lift.
@@AB-80X I do too, they were just a few miles from my house and I could get cams within 3 to 5 days. I got to know a bunch of guys there and worked with them on choosing cams for my motors. Great bunch of people. They all lost their retirements and most had been there for the majority of their careers. Very sad.
General question. Are there measurable benefits on using high end AFR heads or similar on a small block chevy with a smaller cam between 195 to 220 intake duration?
YES!! SO GLAD YOU ARE CALLING OUT THESE PRIVATE EQUITY scumbags- that is all they are. They really are a big reason American industry has gone to hell.
I wish i had funny jokes but sometimez it doesn't come out funny. But anyways good update. I will think of a question as soon as i can which i know you said tomorrow or whatever it might be a quick thought
One of my favorite Southern comments is "the juice ain't worth the squeeze". I really like that you're doing bios and backgrounds and a little bit of how'd you come to your specs conversation with each of the competitors! Keep them coming. #teamGPI
You are both very respectable men and that is why i follow both of you. Being a former conventional machinist allows me to really appreciate the work that both of you do.
I cannot remember the young man's name, but my brother turned me on to him. He raised all his own money to compete in the Bass Masters and the Pro Elite. He had an incredible video on how PE sees something good in an industry. Tries to buy it. If you refuse to sell, they buy your suppliers and begin to cut you off so you go under. Really fucked up. And yes they are like locusts. They buy something. Gut it to benefit the shareholders, layoff or fire the workers and blame the labor costs for why the company went under.
I wish UD Harold was still living... That guy was a genuis with cam designs... So much that several cam companies who i wont mention used his designs and tried to claim there own... Then after retreving all his knowledge fired him or made a reason to get rid of him . Alot of his cam profiles were us in alot of winning cars....
Yes he was! and would talk to lots of people....There would be no Comp Cams without /harold all their stuff was designed by him in the early days. I still use a few UD lobes on my builds and Bullet Cams has all his old "Cam Masters" in their inventory.
@@ejgrant5191 The Same goes for Lunati and bullet cams. Harold work for them as well before he died. He started with ultra dyne cams if my memory serves me correct.
@@powellmachineinc Mr. Powell you are correct about Lunati. But either way you look at it employee or contractor you still work for the company. Harold never got the credit he deserved for his cam designs. They just flat out worked. Especially the asymmetrical stuff he was working on .And most of all he always had time to talk to you about your build and give great advice.
@MRnicknitro919 working for a company and doing work for a company are 2 very different things, In the cam world Harold was well known and respected, I'm not aware of Joe trying to hide the fact that he contracted Harold to design the new line, it was pretty well known.
I can remember going to Summit when it was literally in a guys garage, in I think Akron Ohio. I lived just across the OH/PA border in Springfield (neighbored Conneaut, OH) in the '80's. Talk about a growth spurt! LOL
With imported parts it's a conundrum, it's a self sabotaging situation an I get it, the economy is forcing people to go that route but buying Chinese makes the price gap even more prominent making the choice even harder to not take advantage of the cheap prices. There's the people who freak out about people buying Chinese but people on a tight budget still want to participate in the hot rod lifestyle but if they only bought American they just couldn't do it... When an American intake is $300+ and a comparable Chinese is $140 or a Chinese turbo is $250 and an American turbo is $2500 or enforcers or promaxx heads are $1000ish and brodix are $2000+...as much as you don't like to you just buy it anyway or never have a turbo car and you're just gonna be watching RU-vid car content with nothing but your thumb in your ass dreaming of going fast but with a project you can't afford to work on.... It's easy to criticize people and act all riotous when the person is doing well financially and has everything. The only way around buying Chinese when money is tight is buying used and that can be a great option instead of buying a cheap Chinese edlebrock knockoff intake I found a nice Holley 300-36 contender for $100 and it's likely better anyway, but certain items on marketplace is risky like heads, you can easily get scammed on say a set of bad aluminum heads so easy, there's prob as many unscrupulous sellers as honest ones on marketplace.
Summit parts are really pretty high-quality. I’ve been using their timing sets for a really long time as well as they’re pistons and many other parts and now I just tried a set of the Rockerarms and I was actually pleasantly surprised so I don’t see anything wrong with using summit parts
Agree about Powell he does cam repairs also, Just bought a Berco grinder which is the best non gang master grinder available, good to know about his masters, copies always loose accuracy. Summit was a great competitor to our Speed Shop damn covid they made it through we did not
I just got in a kick ass custom Vortec cam from Powell. Going in a mild street strip build, and will make great power I'm sure. The last one was excellent too. Brian Nutter from Summit has put in a lot of work on their new series of cams too. Will be great to see the results. -Ron
Hey Eric, made it till the end as always 😂😂😂😂😂 This is a question that goes way back to what an engine builder told me prob over 25 years ago. He said he prefers to use cast iron heads on cast iron blocks, and aluminum on aluminum if you can get a comparable cast iron head say dart iron eagle platinum to its aluminum counterpart. The reason being is the growth rate varies between iron and aluminum so it's better if they can grow the same. I may not have worded it perfectly but hopefully you can understand what I'm talking about, thank you. Do you agree????
Have you ever considered testing down leg vs annular carbs on the dyno mules? Or maybe your carb has annular, can we get the Venturi and throttle blade sizing on it?
My question: Let's say you have two ways to achieve a target compression ratio and one involves a larger chamber and a flat top piston, and the other way is with a smaller chamber and a dished piston. Is one scenario preferable to the other? Thinking about a chevy 383
Post 90's, it seems to me that hospitals do alot of patient [wallet] farming - minus the charity that used to occur, handling poorer patients that once made a decent balance. Simple, even dumb things like carbo loading [serving up a zero protein meal] to the bedridden, or mucking about with stents when a patient clearly is on a path to open heart surgery come to mind. Doctors are in charge of their own offices but the moment they step into a hospital setting, administrators are largely dictating standard of care. Some of them suck, and most of them... are practicing cdc, not medicine.
I'm curious about lobe design and the effects of the valve open and close how does that effect power? Thank you for all you do sir this is badd ass knowledge priceless knowledge!
