UPDATE - I put links below to the products used for the repair let me know if I missed one that your are interested in. Please Subscribe and Like the Video if this helped you ! First a disclaimer, I am not a professional so please be kind, secondly do this at your own risk, you could cause damage to your car or potentially lose your taillight if you don't do it correctly. If you choose to do the repair the risk is all yours.
Last week I got pulled over by a very friendly police officer letting me know that I had a taillight out on our 3 year old 2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali. We took it to the dealer to fix and they came back with a $800 estimate. I searched the internet to find a ton of others with the same problem. Apparently GMC had a safety defect on these but hasn't recalled them. I found a RU-vid video on how one person had fixed theirs but still had some questions ( I will link to it below). So I set out to fix ours and avoid the $800 bill. The repair was not too difficult but you will need some tools and a little bit of mechanical know how.
This video was shot on a Snoopa ATOM gimbal with a Samsung Galaxy Note 8

I think everyone who is experiencing this issue should contact NHTSA and file a complaint against GM. This is 100 % a safety issue and GM should be held responsible to fix every vehicle they have sold. They are lying thru their teeth to say they have not seen any issues and they need to be made accountable. I am a former gm service manager and can tell you the words lawsuit, class action and safety issue will make them take notice.

I did this repair as you showed. Perfect. Also, a narrow blade putty knife heated up is an ideal plastic cutter, very accurate. I sealed the light housing back up with "liquid black tape" out of a bottle with brush, very easy. That rubberized dip for plyers handles would work just as well. Thanks for your tireless research. GMC, shame on you. Total garbage and the ripoff cost of replacements just makes me wander further away from Detroit USA products and into the waiting arms of the Asian manufacturers. Sad.

Man I’ve had to redo mine at least 3-4 times already. I’ve done just solder and a wire (like yours). Emailed back and forth with GMC, and they said they haven’t got much complaints about these taillights. 😡. I agree I think it’s ridiculous that their “professional grade” is pretty low grade, especially given the cash we dish out to buy these vehicles. And they won’t even recall this part, so frustrating.

Yeah I just tried again two weeks ago no recall and these are definitely a safety hazard. Probably needs to be a lawsuit at some point to get them to do the right thing.

GOOD NEWS! Cheverolet and GMC Motors is completely aware of this and they now have a Safety Bulletin on this and will repair for FREE! I have a 2016 Yukon with drivers side brake out. After searching the internet I found the Safety Recall letter sent out to all dealers. When I called the dealer said they couldn't find and knew nothing about the Safety Recall.(They wanted $800) It's technically not a recall but a Safety Bulletin. They miraculously found it repaired it in ten minutes for FREE.

I just bought a new to me 2015 Yukon xl Denali. Didn’t even make it home from the dealer I bought it from before passenger side failed. By the time I moved it over to my shop the drivers side had failed. Luckily I was aware of the issue before buying, the officer that pulled me over was just letting me know it was out because it was obvious from the temp tag I bought it that day, and I was already planning to preemptively repair them. One thing I personally did was I noticed a hole that the metal located into the plastic piece I cut out so I carefully drilled a second hole on the opposite side of the break. Then i roughed up the metal with a jewelers file and cleaned with 91% alcohol. Then I used a piece of copper wire that was inserted into the 2 holes and located along the narrow strip and soldered the entire piece of copper wire to the metal. I used a pretty good wattage solder iron and appears to have a nice strong bond. Hopefully it’s reinforced enough that it won’t break again at least for a good long while. I also used copious amounts of hot glue to seal mine back up with the thought I may need to do the repair again and would easily be reopened. I’ve seen silicone and other adhesives used but I’m confident hot glue will be sufficient.
@NewtTech
@NewtTech Год назад
Good improvement the hole will keep it from failing there again there are two spots on each light designed to break so you may have to fix the other spot the same way and you should be done.

@@NewtTech well knowing the each taillight had 2 failure points going in to the purchase I already had planned the repair regardless of if they were already broken or not. While it’s not that difficult to remove the tail lights having prior experience with common failure items in other facets of work and life it seemed prudent to just make all the repairs/reinforcements to start with. So anyone reading this take heed that if you do remove the tail light to make a repair take the extra time to do both. You might be doing it again. Jason just reaffirmed my decision to do both repairs needed or not. Finally it appears my me that gm could have reinforced those sections pretty easily and effectively once the issue was known. And once the updated process was instituted would be a marginal increase in the overall part. Given the amount of these vehicles equipped with these tail lights it’s quite surprising they did nothing. I can’t think it’s cheaper to get sued over this. But perhaps this is a window into the future of manufacturing as a whole. It seems more and more the simplest things are under engineered with an eye twards replacement. Given the fairly high cost of replacement we are lucky to be able to repair them with minimal skill. I grew up in an era when you repaired things so I always try to figure out a way to fix anything that breaks. It’s about 50/50 in my experience. Sometimes the inability to repair something is due to cost or parts to repair, which isn’t the case with these. It literally cost me time as I already owned everything required for the repair, and even if I didn’t would be cheap.

This unfortunately is not a permanent repair, I did this to mine about 8 months ago and they went out again. I bought a rebuilt pair off eBay from a seller called Taillight Rescue, they fix them correctly with a board overlay correcting the failure issue permanently. One less thing I need to worry about on my Yukon
@NewtTech
@NewtTech Год назад
How much were those? We have been fortunate I had one pop off once and soldered it again using a wire other than that they have held. The best way to fix this is to use the correct thickness of metal for the runner all the way around or directly wire each light. This appears to be planned obsolescence it was designed to go out so you would have to pay for replacement parts. This issue for GM is their engineers are so bad they can't even do that right. The whole truck is riddled with kidner grade engineering. The brakes, suspension, transmission, engine springs, brakes and external seals for things like the GPS are all designed either too small or under weight for such a large vehicle. They have lost so many customers by not backing these issues up and fixing them. The only thing saving them is the outside appearance they have that down. We now own a Ram 1500 and Ford SUV and neither one has been in the shop or broke down and left us stranded yet. By now the Denali had 3 times. My advice is fix it and get rid of it

We have a 2015 and my passenger side tail light is out but works if we tap it. Also, you wanted to know what we thought of the vehicle... it’s been to the shop twice for transmission issues and needs to go back. It jerks all over the road... jumps forward when I ease into a stop and hesitates to go into reverse. Then when it does engage into reverse it jerks hard. Total disappointment. Waited years to have a vehicle of this class and my 2011 Nissan Pathfinder shifts smoother and hasn’t been in the shop as much! It has like 124,000 miles as well. We have also had a piece of trim by the door fall off. And my GPS antennae has water intrusion due to their faulty part/design and they want to charge $500 to put the exact same faulty part back on. It’s been a mess to say the least! Thanks for sharing the video. Saves us money and we appreciate it!

My back left just went out so going to try this. I’ve had a ton of issues with my Denali (her name is Black Denalia). This car has been such a drama queen. My tv recently stopped working and they say I have to replace the whole unit. My touch screen is glitching and has a delay when I swipe or tap sometimes. Wireless phone charger isn’t working. Half the USB ports aren’t working. Lurches forward when I’m braking occasionally. I’m about to be on my third set of brakes. The rubber trim by both my back tires on the inside both pop off anytime I take it through the wash. The top drivers side roof rail thing flew off while I was on the highway, lane assist randomly doesn’t work, and my GPS doesn’t show the direction I’m heading, and says I’m somewhere in Mexico every time I pull it up...only I live in the Dallas, TX area. 🤦🏼‍♀️ That’s just what I can think of off the top of my head that’s recent. GMC can eat a bag of dicks for charging that much for a car that everything breaks on, and when it does, it’s always damn near a mortgage payment by the time you leave the shop. This was my dream car. I drove a chevy Cruze (Name was Nugget) for five years before I got this car, and not one damn thing went wrong with it the whole time. Starting to miss that Nugget lol.

We have had a lot the biggest have been lifter spring broke and shot through the heads $8k repair 2k miles out of warranty at less than 3 years old GM did cover almost 5k of it after multiple complaints, my wife drives it mostly non highway never a not paved road. It has had 5 front suspension issues and has gone through 4 sets of tires at less than 50k miles. Leaking gps antenna twice once covered by GM once by us,. Transmission stutters and slips been in multiple times there. Infotainment lock ups. I am sure I am forgetting some issues. All of our maintenance has been done by GM at the recommended intervals

@@NewtTech Just to clarify, you were at 60,000 before the vehicle was 3 years old? The powertrain warranty is a 5 year/60,000 warranty. You might want to post about your issues on www.gm-trucks.com. I think plenty of members there would find it fascinating and perhaps a discussion would begin.

Blaine Bugaski yes just barely 60800 when the spring broke and 38000 when the seal for the gps leaked the second time. I have read many others having some similar issues. Especially the brakes, transmission, gps and now the spring. Knock on wood it has been pretty stable other than the transmission issue and the suspension which seems like are universal for the last 5k.

I did this fix and it did not work. I removed and exposed both fail points and one was intact and the other was clearly broken. I soldered a piece of wire across, plugged it in and... nothing. Still didn't work.
@NewtTech

Might double check it didn't come loose when you sealed it back up, that happened to me on the second light the material they used is a pain to solder.

@@NewtTech I didn't even seal it, I just plugged it in and had it facing the front of the car so I could see and test it. I am wondering if I didn't use the right size gauge of wire.

Why is it the same driver side light.... Mines just went out.. 300 to 740 dollar light
@NewtTech
@NewtTech 4 года назад
They are all defective from what I can tell it does seem like the drivers side goes first. But eventually both will go. I just fixed my other side about 2 months ago both repairs are still working and I have no issues. I was able to fix the other one with the same stuff I bought on the first. But it is ridiculous that they fail this much and are that expensive.

There is also a kit that replaces them with Escalade lights that is less than half the price i almost did that before I stumbled on the fix.

I thinks is funny how a person who uses a knife, a tourch and flux in addition to flux core solder and grandmas hot glue gun to do an auto repair is calling out any auto manufacturer as unprofessional. If you reply, tell me one vehicle manufacturer that has zero issues. It's a machine, all machines and electronics have breakdowns. Even the most precision engineered machines break down, nothing lasts forever.

This is designed to fail that is the difference and I am not a car manufacturer just a guy sick of being screwed over by GMC(800 to fix a tail light). They didn't back it when it did fail until they got threatened with their 3rd class action law suit on just this model. It has been in the shop for 15 months of the last 5 years and both of our neighbors have too. We have purchased 14 new cars from 6 different brands over the years and not a single one has been in the shop more than 5 times. Well except our two GMCs one 13 times in 65000 miles this one 29 times in 100000 miles. GMC is an absolute embarrassment and our whole family along with our neighbors that bought will never buy one again. Sorry if you work for GM but if you do instead of whining about it help fix the problem.

Ours just had the engine fail at just over 60k miles and almost no help from GMC, Ford replaced our transmission at 75k miles because it should fail that early no charge. I can't believe how bad they are for the price.
