Y’all need to get a third person who asks for you. Then have them guess who speaks better before speaking. Then after speaking the judgment of who speaks better.

Elementary Chinese! I hope you can answer this burning question of mine that hasn’t been answered for months... Why do Chinese have such big reactions to a foreigner speaking fluent Mandarin WITH A BEIJING ACCENT? They’re surprised when you (or others) speak fluent Mandarin, but they’re even more surprised when you (or others) have a Beijing accent. Why is that so? Is it hard? How is it different? Is it nicer? I don’t understand their overwhelmed faces... Thank you for your answer!

It's just that we were in Beijing.... so they were surprised. I think Chinese definitely know that Mandarin is hard for non-Chinese. It really is the minority of foreigners in China that can speak Mandarin.

I love America! I'm Chinese and I'm learning from a black guy how to speak Chinese. I had a gf that was Mexican and could speak Chinese and she'd always say she knows they're calling her fat. They were shocked! Do you get shit talking too?

I do like your videos, its real help me to improve my Chinese, but i have suggestion, it is better if you sett a big camera then other person record you, if you use a phone its don't look like a big program , some people can not take it serious also other people can fear to be recorded because they can think that you have another secret issue. Just take a camera sett give a person to record you, you can use a mic sometime, this can make interviewee more believing you.

Im a white guy from Canada. I would've assumed the woman can speak better Chinese too because even if I could guess she was Philipino instead of Chinese (I've been around lots of both ethnically Philipino and ethnically Chinese people so I might've been able to guess) I would've assumed the woman was either Chinese-Philipino (there are a lot of ethnically Chinese people living in the Phillipines) or that she was a migrant worker from the Phillipines who'd lived in China for longer than the black guy.

0:43 I call bollocks. Thousands of Castilian Spanish words exist in Filipino vocabulary! Most older Filipinos can understand me when I speak Spanish throws her assumptions out the window. She didn’t get the memo that Filipinos and Spaniard share four centuries of a common history. Now that can change in a century’s time given Chinese expansion in Asia but that is clearly not the case right now.

Being Asian has nothing to do with it. I know several CBC (Canadian born Chinese) that can't speak any Mandarin. Only English.

Here in the USA. Wether you’re Asian, middle eastern, European , you’re expected to know English. Why are they surprised. Is Chinese only for Chinese people?

Yeah. Chinese know that their language is hard, and the USA was built on waves of new people and immigrants. China has very little immigration. Oh and most non-Chinese are only temporarily in China on 1,2 or 3 year contracts. It's been that way since the 90s. Most don't learn Chinese. Chinese folks have come to expect it.

It's because English is not only the language of USA but also an international language (lingua franca) so you can technically live in any country just knowing English, including the US, that's why many people inve in Beijing or Tokyo only knowing English
